Chapter 6: The Father Who Came with an Agenda

I didn't confront Daniel immediately.

Evelyn advised me to preserve the access logs, secure the company's systems, and avoid making accusations until we had verified exactly what had happened.

Marcus brought in a cybersecurity firm.

By Monday morning, the results were ready.

Someone had accessed the company server using Daniel's old credentials.

The login had been authenticated through a device associated with his consulting firm.

The files downloaded included our Chicago expansion plans, supplier agreements, projected revenue, and a confidential lease negotiation.

I sat in Marcus's office, reading the report.

“Could someone else have used his account?””

Marcus nodded.

“Possibly. The investigation is ongoing. But the device registration is his.””

I looked at Evelyn.

“What can we do?””

“Send a formal preservation notice, demand that the materials not be used, and investigate whether this constitutes unauthorized access or a breach of confidentiality.””

“Can we stop Reed Capital from acquiring the Chicago building?””

“We can challenge any improper use of confidential information. But the property transaction is a separate matter.””

I stared at the report.

Daniel had once slept beside me while I worked on the original Élan business plan.

He knew how much that company meant to me.

And now he was connected to the disappearance of its most valuable information.

“Send the notice,” I said.

Evelyn nodded.

“And Amara?””

“Yes?””

“Keep Lily away from all of this. Whatever happens between the adults, she should not become the messenger.””

I looked at the photograph on my desk.

“I won't let her.””

Daniel called that afternoon.

I answered because I wanted to hear his explanation.

“Did you access my company's files?””

Silence.

Then he said, “What?””

“Your device accessed our private server.””

“That's impossible.””

“We have the logs.””

He exhaled sharply.

“Amara, I haven't touched anything belonging to Élan.””

“Your credentials were used.””

“Then someone must have accessed my account.””

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

I waited.

He continued.

“Listen, Vanessa's father has been pushing me to help with the acquisition. I refused.””

“Did you tell him about my Chicago expansion?””

“No.””

“Did you send him my financial projections?””

“No.””

“Then why are your credentials connected to the download?””

“I don't know!””

His voice rose.

I lowered mine.

“Daniel, I need you to understand something. If you have been sharing my company's confidential information, I will pursue every legal option available.””

“Amara, I'm not trying to hurt you.””

“Then stop putting me in situations where I have to defend myself against you.””

He was quiet.

Finally, he said, “Can we talk in person?””

“No.””

“Please.””

“Everything about the company goes through my lawyer. Everything about Lily goes through the parenting process.””

I ended the call.

That evening, Daniel arrived for his scheduled video call with Lily.

I sat nearby while she showed him her drawings.

“Look! This is our house.””

Daniel smiled.

“That's beautiful.””

“And this is Mommy's restaurant.””

“Very nice.””

“And this is you.””

She held up a drawing of a man with blue pants and a large head.

Daniel laughed.

“I look handsome.””

“You have funny hair.””

He touched his head.

“That's probably true.””

I almost smiled.

Then Lily asked, “Are you coming to my school?””

Daniel looked toward the camera.

“If your mommy says it's okay.””

Lily turned toward me.

“Can he?””

I considered it.

Her school had a family breakfast event the following Friday.

I could allow him to attend under supervision.

“We can discuss it,” I said.

Daniel nodded.

“Thank you.””

The call ended ten minutes later.

Lily ran to her bedroom.

I remained on the sofa.

Daniel's face had looked genuine.

That was the problem.

I didn't know whether I was looking at a man trying to become a father or someone pretending to be one.

On Wednesday, I received an invitation from Margaret.

She wanted to take Lily to lunch.

I declined.

She called me immediately.

“Amara, this is ridiculous.””

“Good afternoon to you too, Margaret.””

“I've given you several opportunities to let me see my granddaughter.””

“You've had one supervised introduction.””

“And you stood there watching every move.””

“She's five. That's what parents do.””

Margaret sighed.

“I understand that you're angry with Daniel, but I have done nothing to you.””

I looked out the kitchen window.

“You defended him when he left.””

“He was making his own decisions.””

“And you told me not to make a scene when I discovered Vanessa.””

Margaret fell silent.

I continued.

“You said I should be grateful Daniel had chosen to be honest instead of continuing to lie.””

“I don't remember saying that.””

“I do.””

She exhaled.

“People say things during difficult times.””

“And people remember them.””

Then her voice softened.

“Amara, I am getting older. I don't know how many years I have left to know this little girl.””

For a moment, I felt sympathy.

Then she added:

“And Daniel is under tremendous pressure. Vanessa's family has offered him a major opportunity. I hope you won't do anything to jeopardize his future.””

The sympathy disappeared.

“What does his future have to do with Lily?””

Margaret hesitated.

“Richard has connections. He could help Daniel build something significant.””

I leaned back.

“Is that why you're calling?””

“No.””

“Then let's keep the conversation about Lily.””

I ended the call.

Friday morning, Lily's school hosted its family breakfast.

I arrived early and helped her arrange paper flowers on the classroom tables.

Daniel arrived ten minutes later.

He wore a blue sweater and carried a small bouquet of daisies.

Lily ran toward him.

“Daddy!””

The word stopped me.

Daniel's face changed.

He crouched and hugged her.

“Hello, sweetheart.””

She took the flowers.

“Those are for my teacher.””

“I thought she might like them.””

The teacher, Mrs. Parker, approached.

“You must be Lily's father.””

Daniel stood.

“Yes. Daniel Carter.””

“It's lovely to meet you.””

He shook her hand.

I watched carefully.

For an hour, he behaved exactly as a father should.

He helped Lily with her breakfast. He listened to her story about a missing library book. He even joined the children in a paper airplane competition.

Lily laughed so hard she spilled orange juice on his sweater.

He didn't complain.

At the end, Mrs. Parker approached me.

“Lily has been talking about her father all week.””

I smiled.

“I'm glad she's happy.””

“She seems very excited.””

I looked toward Daniel.

He was helping Lily put her backpack on.

Then I noticed his phone.

It lit up on the table.

A message appeared.

*VANESSA: Did you get the documents? Dad needs them before Monday.*

Daniel quickly turned the phone over.

But I had already read it.

He noticed me looking.

“Amara…”

I held up my hand.

“Not here.””

He swallowed.

“It's not what you think.””

“Then you should have a very good explanation.””

Lily came running toward us.

“Mommy! Daddy said he might come to my birthday!””

Daniel looked at me.

I forced a smile for my daughter.

“We'll talk about that later, sweetheart.””

That night, I sat in my office with Evelyn and Marcus.

I showed them the photograph I had taken of Daniel's phone screen.

Evelyn studied it.

“Did you confront him?””

“No.””

“Good. Don't. We'll send the message to the investigators and preserve your original evidence.””

Marcus placed another document on the desk.

“There's something else we found.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He opened a corporate registry report.

Reed Capital had recently established a subsidiary called Carter Hospitality Holdings.

The registered director was Daniel Carter.

I stared at the document.

“Daniel owns this company?””

“According to the filing, yes.””

“When was it created?””

“Three weeks before he first came to Élan.””

I looked at the date.

Three weeks.

Before he knew about Lily.

Before he saw me behind the kitchen counter.

Before he pretended to be shocked that I had become successful.

My stomach tightened.

“Why would he create a hospitality company?””

Marcus turned the page.

“Because it appears to be the vehicle Reed Capital intends to use for its restaurant acquisitions.””

I picked up the document.

There was Daniel's signature.

Clear.

Unmistakable.

He hadn't simply been caught in the middle of Vanessa's family's business.

He had helped build the structure.

Evelyn looked at me.

“This could be important. But we need the underlying agreements before drawing conclusions.””

I nodded.

Then another email arrived.

This one was from the Chicago property broker.

The subject line read:

*URGENT: REED CAPITAL HAS SUBMITTED A FINAL OFFER.*

I opened it.

The attached letter stated that Reed Capital had secured financing to purchase the building where Élan's next flagship restaurant was scheduled to open.

But at the bottom was an additional condition.

The seller would only proceed if the existing tenant agreed to terminate its lease.

I read the paragraph twice.

Then I understood.

They weren't just trying to take over my business.

They wanted to force me out of the location I had spent eighteen months securing.

Marcus stared at the document.

“If they get that building, our Chicago launch is finished.””

I looked at Daniel's signature on the corporate filing.

Then at the photograph of Lily on my desk.

My daughter had spent the morning calling him Daddy.

And I had spent the evening discovering that he was building a company designed to compete against everything I had created.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

“Amara, please don't believe whatever Marcus is telling you.””

I looked at the corporate filing.

“Did you create Carter Hospitality Holdings?””

Silence.

Then he whispered:

“Who told you about that?””

I felt something inside me go completely still.

“Answer the question, Daniel.””

He took a breath.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was trying to build something of my own.””

“With Vanessa's father?””

“Yes.””

“Using my business information?””

“Not exactly.””

I closed my eyes.

Then he said the words that made my blood run cold.

“Amara, you need to understand. Richard promised me something in exchange for helping him acquire Élan.””

“What?””

Daniel hesitated.

And when he finally answered, I realized that the restaurant was only part of what he wanted.

“He promised me a position in the family trust. And once Lily was legally recognized as my daughter, she would become eligible for certain benefits.””

I gripped the phone.

“What benefits?””

Daniel's voice dropped.

“There's a trust fund in my family's name. But there's a condition attached to it.””

I stood.

“What condition?””

He was silent for several seconds.

Then he said:

“Lily has to be raised within the Carter family. And Richard says he can make sure that happens.””

I felt the room tilt.

Because suddenly, I understood why Vanessa's father had been so interested in my daughter.

He wasn't simply interested in becoming her wealthy grandfather.

May you like

He wanted control over the family she belonged to.

And Daniel had already agreed to help him get it.
