Chapter 14: The Last Secret in the Trust
The four-million-dollar transfer changed everything.
Until that moment, I had believed Richard's primary objective was control.
Control over Élan.
Control over Lily's inheritance.
Control over the Carter family.
Now we had evidence that he might have stolen money from the very trust he claimed to be protecting.
Daniel arrived at Thomas's office the following morning.
He looked as though he hadn't slept.
“I didn't authorize that transfer.””
Thomas placed a printed transaction record on the table.
“Your name appears here.””
Daniel studied it.
Then he shook his head.
“This isn't my signature.””
Thomas adjusted his glasses.
“Are you certain?””
“Yes. I haven't signed a trust document in years.””
Evelyn examined the authorization.
“Do we have the original?””
Thomas nodded.
“I requested it from the institution holding the records.””
He removed a document from a folder.
The signature looked convincing.
But Daniel pointed to the date.
“I was in Boston that week.””
Evelyn looked up.
“Can you prove that?””
Daniel pulled out his phone.
“My company travel records. Hotel receipts. Flight confirmation.””
Thomas nodded.
“That may help establish that the authorization was not signed in person.””
I looked at the transaction details.
“Where did the money go?””
Thomas turned the page.
“Through three separate companies. The first was a property development firm. The second was connected to Reed Capital. The third was a private investment vehicle registered overseas.””
Marcus joined us by video.
“I traced the companies,” he said.
“Two share directors with the holding company that submitted the competing offer for Élan's Chicago property.””
I looked at him.
“So the trust money was moving through companies involved in the acquisition.””
“That's what the records suggest.””
Thomas removed another document.
“And I found something in Edward's original correspondence.””
He unfolded a letter.
The handwriting was old and slightly shaky.
“Edward wrote this shortly before his death.””
He began reading.
If Richard has managed to reach the first beneficiary, he will attempt to convince the family that the money belongs to them. It does not. It belongs to the child, and no adult should be permitted to trade the child's future for personal gain.
Thomas stopped.
Then he turned the page.
I have arranged for the original investment records to remain separate from the family archive. If any transfer is challenged, the custodian must verify the source and destination of every asset.
Evelyn leaned forward.
“Where are those records?””
Thomas looked at her.
“That's what I've been trying to establish.””
He opened a small metal box.
Inside was an old key and a handwritten address.
“Edward left instructions for a second archive. He said it would contain the complete history of the trust.””
I looked at the address.
It was an office building in downtown Chicago.
We arrived at the building that afternoon.
The property was old but well maintained. Thomas explained that Edward had once used the office for private investment meetings.
A security guard escorted us to a storage room on the seventh floor.
The room contained several locked cabinets.
Thomas used the key.
Inside were boxes of financial statements, correspondence, and original company documents.
Marcus began photographing the labels.
Evelyn reviewed the legal records.
I found a folder marked:
*REED — PRIVATE TRANSACTIONS.*
Inside were bank transfers dating back almost a decade.
Some were legitimate.
Others were not.
The documents showed that money had moved from the Carter trust into companies connected to Richard, then into property developments and hospitality ventures.
One of the companies had invested in the same commercial property where Élan planned to open its Chicago flagship.
I looked at Evelyn.
“Richard wasn't simply trying to buy my business.””
She shook her head.
“He may have been using it to complete a financial structure.””
Thomas opened another folder.
“Edward suspected that.””
There was a letter addressed to Richard.
It was dated six months before Edward died.
You were entrusted with the management of these funds, not ownership. I will not allow you to use my family's name to disguise unauthorized transactions.
Richard's response was attached.
It denied wrongdoing and accused Edward of misunderstanding the investment structure.
But a handwritten note appeared at the bottom.
If Edward removes me, the entire arrangement collapses.
I felt a chill.
“Did Edward remove him?””
Thomas nodded.
“He intended to.””
“Then why didn't it happen?””
“Edward died before the final review could be completed.””
Evelyn studied the documents.
“Richard may have used the period after Edward's death to move assets before the independent administrator could intervene.””
Thomas looked down.
“I believe so.””
That evening, Daniel called me.
He sounded different.
“I found something.””
“What?””
“A message from Vanessa.””
He sent me a screenshot.
It was dated two weeks before the first custody meeting.
Vanessa had written:
Dad says the Chicago deal has to close before the trust review. Once the assets are consolidated, the family can settle everything quietly.
I stared at the screen.
“Did you respond?””
Daniel sent another screenshot.
His response was only one sentence.
I don't want to be involved in anything that affects Lily.
I looked at the date.
It had been sent after he discovered the forged agreement.
At least this time, he had refused.
“Where is Vanessa now?”” I asked.
“She left Richard's house.””
“Why?””
“She says he is blaming her for the missing money.””
I almost laughed.
“She's surprised?””
Daniel didn't answer.
Then he said, “She wants to meet you.””
“No.””
“She says she has evidence.””
I closed my eyes.
“Daniel, I don't trust her.””
“I don't either.””
“Then why are you asking?””
“Because she says Richard has a second set of records. And she knows where they are.””
I stared at the screenshot.
“What does she want in exchange?””
“She wants protection.””
I considered that.
“Tell her to speak to Evelyn.””
Vanessa arrived at Evelyn's office the next morning.
She looked nothing like the confident woman who had once mocked me in my own restaurant.
Her hair was unstyled.
Her makeup was minimal.
She carried a thick envelope.
“I know you don't want to see me,” she said.
I remained seated.
“Then make this quick.””
Vanessa looked at Evelyn.
“I need legal protection.””
Evelyn folded her hands.
“Protection from what?””
“My father.””
“Why?””
“Because he knows I have the records.””
She placed the envelope on the desk.
Inside were printed emails, bank statements, and photographs of a portable storage device.
I examined the first page.
It contained a list of transfers.
Several matched the transactions Thomas had discovered.
Vanessa spoke quietly.
“Richard kept a private ledger. He called it the family reconciliation file.””
“Why do you have it?””
“Because he wanted me to manage the hospitality companies after the Chicago acquisition.””
“And you agreed?””
“Yes.””
I stared at her.
“Why should I believe you now?””
She swallowed.
“Because he has decided I know too much.””
Evelyn examined the documents.
“Do you have the original ledger?””
Vanessa nodded.
“It's in a safe deposit box.””
“Where?””
“I'll disclose that through my attorney.””
I leaned forward.
“What does Richard plan to do?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“He intends to leave the country.””
The room went silent.
“When?””
“Friday.””
Today was Wednesday.
Evelyn immediately called Thomas.
Vanessa continued.
“He has arranged to sell his remaining interests in the hospitality companies. Once the transfers are complete, he'll claim the trust losses were caused by poor investment performance.””
I looked at the papers.
“Why didn't you tell anyone sooner?””
Her face tightened.
“Because I thought I could get everything I wanted.””
There was no apology in her voice.
Only exhaustion.
“You thought you could have the company, the money, and Daniel,” I said.
She looked down.
“I thought I could control the situation.””
“You helped plan a custody arrangement for a child you barely knew.””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“I know.””
“You signed off on a document that treated Lily like an asset.””
“I know.””
I stood.
“You don't get forgiveness just because your father turned against you.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
Evelyn gathered the documents.
“If these records are genuine, you need to provide a complete statement and cooperate with the investigation. You should also obtain independent legal counsel.””
Vanessa stood.
“I will.””
Before leaving, she turned toward me.
“There's one more thing.””
I waited.
“My father didn't discover Lily by accident.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What do you mean?””
Vanessa took a breath.
“Richard had someone monitoring Daniel's old correspondence with you. He knew there was a possibility you had been pregnant when you divorced.””
I stared.
“Who?””
She looked at Evelyn.
“Victoria Shaw.””
That evening, Thomas called an emergency meeting.
The independent custodian had received confirmation that Richard's authority was suspended.
The trust's remaining assets were being frozen pending an independent audit.
But Thomas had found another document in Edward's archive.
It was a sealed letter addressed to Lily.
The letter had been written before she was born.
Thomas placed it on the table.
“Edward never knew her name,” he said.
“But he knew that one day, a child might inherit this trust.””
I looked at the envelope.
“Can we read it?””
Thomas nodded.
Evelyn carefully opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
To the child who may one day carry the Carter name,
You are not responsible for the mistakes of the people who came before you. You do not owe this family your loyalty, your obedience, or your future.
I felt my eyes fill.
Thomas continued.
If you inherit anything from me, let it be the freedom to choose who you become.
At the bottom was one final paragraph.
And if Richard Reed is still near this family, make sure you know what happened to the money before you trust a single promise he makes.
Thomas lowered the letter.
Then his phone rang.
He listened for several seconds.
His face changed.
“What happened?”” Evelyn asked.
Thomas ended the call.
“Richard's private plane has been moved to an airport outside the city.””
Evelyn stood.
“Has he left?””
“Not yet.””
I looked at the clock.
It was nearly midnight.
Thomas gathered the documents.
“There's a warrant request being prepared, but we need the original ledger to establish the full transfer trail.””
Vanessa had promised to deliver it.
But when Evelyn called her, the phone went straight to voicemail.
A message arrived seconds later.
It was from an unknown number.
Tell Amara that Richard has the original ledger. He knows you're looking for it. And he knows where Lily goes to school.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
Evelyn immediately called the school and instructed them to follow their emergency release procedures.
Then my phone rang.
It was Lily's teacher.
“Ms. Carter,” she said urgently, “there's a man here asking to collect Lily.””
I gripped the phone.
“Who?””
May you like
The teacher hesitated.
“He says he's her grandfather.””
