Chapter 9: The Grandfather's Last Warning
The room remained silent after Thomas spoke.
Richard Reed had been searching for Lily for nearly six years.
That meant he had been looking before Daniel and I divorced.
Before Lily was born.
Possibly before I even knew I was pregnant.
I turned toward Thomas.
“How could Richard have known about a child who didn't exist yet?””
Thomas adjusted his glasses.
“He knew Edward's instructions. He knew the first qualifying child would receive the independent inheritance. And he knew that whoever controlled the trust records would have a great deal to lose if the independent custodian began asking questions.””
Evelyn leaned forward.
“Are you saying he was monitoring the family?””
Thomas nodded.
“Richard had access to Daniel's employment records, family financial documents, and certain private investment files. He was also involved in the administration of Edward's estate.””
Daniel looked shaken.
“Why would he search for my child?””
“Because the inheritance was never under his control.””
Thomas placed another document on the table.
“This is a record of the first inquiry Richard made into the trust's beneficiary status.””
I looked at the date.
It was six years earlier.
Daniel was still married to me.
My hands began to tremble.
“What does this have to do with my divorce?””
Thomas looked at Daniel.
“That is something your grandson needs to answer.””
Daniel frowned.
“I don't understand.””
Thomas took a breath.
“Richard approached you about Amara's business before your marriage ended, didn't he?””
Daniel looked at me.
Then at Thomas.
“Yes.””
“Did he ask you whether you and Amara intended to have children?””
Daniel went pale.
I stared at him.
“Did he?””
Daniel swallowed.
“He asked once.””
“When?””
“About a month before I left.””
My chest tightened.
“What exactly did he ask?””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“He wanted to know whether we planned to start a family.””
“And what did you say?””
“I told him we hadn't decided.””
Thomas nodded slowly.
“Richard was trying to establish whether a qualifying child might already exist or be expected.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You knew he was asking about our family plans, and you never told me?””
“I didn't understand why he was asking.””
“You didn't think it was strange?””
“I was working with him. He was Vanessa's father. I thought it was ordinary conversation.””
I looked away.
I could feel the anger building, but beneath it was something worse.
Fear.
If Richard had been monitoring our family, then my daughter's privacy might have been compromised long before I ever met him.
Thomas opened another envelope.
“This is the letter Edward wrote shortly before his death.””
He placed it in front of Daniel.
“Your grandfather wanted you to have this when you became a father.””
Daniel opened it with shaking hands.
He read silently.
Then his face changed.
“What?”” Margaret asked.
Daniel couldn't answer.
I reached for the letter.
He handed it to me.
The handwriting was familiar from the earlier note.
Daniel,
I know you are ambitious. I was once ambitious too. But there is a difference between building something and allowing someone else to use your ambition against the people you love.
I have become concerned about Richard Reed's influence over our family investments.
He has requested information about your wife's business. I have refused to authorize it.
If you are reading this after becoming a father, remember that the child will inherit more than money. They will inherit the consequences of our choices.
I stopped.
The next paragraph made my throat tighten.
If Richard ever approaches you with an opportunity that requires you to sacrifice your wife's independence, refuse it.
I looked at Daniel.
He was staring at the table.
His grandfather had warned him.
And he had done exactly what the letter cautioned against.
After the meeting, Thomas asked me to stay behind.
Daniel and Margaret left with Evelyn.
Thomas waited until the door closed.
“Amara, there's something I didn't want to discuss in front of them.””
I sat down.
“What is it?””
He opened his briefcase again and removed a thin folder.
“Edward had a private investigator examine several transactions before he died.””
I frowned.
“Richard's transactions?””
“Yes. Some funds had been transferred between investment accounts without proper authorization.””
“How much?””
“Initially, approximately three million dollars.””
I stared at him.
“And the rest?””
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
“We haven't established the final amount. But there are indications that Richard used several connected companies to move money through property development projects.””
I thought of Reed Capital.
Carter Hospitality Holdings.
The Chicago property.
“Could he have used my business?””
Thomas nodded.
“Your company may have been identified as a potential vehicle for another transaction.””
I felt sick.
“Why would he want Élan?””
“Because your restaurant group has valuable locations, strong revenue, and expansion potential. It would make an attractive asset for someone attempting to disguise the origin or destination of investment funds.””
I sat back.
Suddenly, Richard's interest in purchasing Élan looked very different.
He hadn't simply wanted a successful restaurant chain.
He might have wanted a business with enough legitimate activity to conceal questionable financial movements.
Thomas closed the folder.
“Edward was afraid this would happen.””
“Why didn't he stop Richard?””
“He tried.””
Thomas paused.
“Then he became ill.””
I looked down.
“Is there anything else I should know?””
Thomas hesitated.
“Yes.””
He reached into his briefcase and removed a small flash drive.
“Edward left copies of several documents with me. I have never released them because I was waiting for the independent beneficiary to be identified.””
I stared at the drive.
“What is on it?””
“Records of the original trust transactions, correspondence with Richard, and an audio recording.””
I looked up.
“An audio recording?””
Thomas nodded.
“Edward wanted his final warning preserved.””
That evening, I sat in Evelyn's office while she reviewed the documents Thomas had provided.
Marcus joined us by video.
He had been investigating Reed Capital's acquisition activity.
“Amara, I found something.””
He shared his screen.
A list of companies appeared.
Several were registered to different addresses, but they had overlapping directors and financial contacts.
One of them was Carter Hospitality Holdings.
Another was a property development company connected to the Chicago building.
A third was a consulting company Richard Reed had used for years.
“They're all connected,” Marcus said.
Evelyn leaned toward the screen.
“Have you verified the ownership?””
“Not completely. But the corporate records show overlapping management.””
I looked at the screen.
“Could Richard be using these companies to move money?””
Marcus nodded.
“It's possible. We need forensic accounting to establish that.””
Evelyn turned toward me.
“Don't make any public accusations. We'll preserve the evidence and let the investigators determine what happened.””
I nodded.
Then I remembered the audio recording.
“Can we listen to Edward's recording?””
Evelyn looked at the drive.
“Let's make a secure copy first.””
She arranged for a digital forensics specialist to examine it.
Twenty minutes later, we sat together in a small conference room.
The recording began with the sound of paper moving.
Then an elderly man's voice filled the room.
Edward Carter.
“If you're listening to this, Richard has probably discovered that I refused to give him control of the independent trust.””
There was a pause.
“I trusted him once. That was my mistake.””
A chair creaked.
Then Edward continued.
“He believes the money belongs to the family because he has spent years managing it. It doesn't. It belongs to the child I intended to protect.””
Another pause.
“Richard has already approached Daniel about his wife's restaurant business. He believes he can use that company to strengthen his position.””
My heart began pounding.
Edward knew.
He had known about Richard's plan while I was still married.
Then his voice became quieter.
“If Daniel has a child, I pray he will be wiser than I was. I pray he will understand that protecting a child sometimes means standing against the people who share your name.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Marcus finally broke the silence.
“Amara, this changes everything.””
Evelyn nodded.
“It gives us evidence of Edward's concerns, but we'll still need independent verification of the financial transactions.””
I stared at the blank screen.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from Daniel.
I need to see you. I found something in Vanessa's office.
I typed back.
What?
His reply came immediately.
A document with your signature.
My stomach tightened.
I called him.
“Daniel, what document?””
He sounded frightened.
“I don't know how to explain it.””
“Then show me.””
“Amara, it's an agreement dated three years ago.””
I went still.
Three years ago, I was already divorced from him.
“What kind of agreement?””
He hesitated.
“It's a document authorizing Reed Capital to use certain information about Élan.””
I stood.
“I never authorized that.””
“I know.””
“Then whose signature is on it?””
Daniel's voice dropped.
“Yours.””
I gripped the edge of the table.
“That's impossible.””
“I thought so too. But it's your signature.””
“Send me a photograph.””
A few seconds later, the image arrived.
I opened it.
The document carried the name of my company.
My business registration number.
My signature.
And a clause authorizing Reed Capital to access confidential operational information in exchange for a proposed investment.
I zoomed in.
The signature looked real.
But I had never signed that agreement.
I looked at Evelyn.
“Someone forged my signature.””
She took the phone and examined the image.
Her expression became serious.
“Don't contact Vanessa. Don't confront Richard. We'll need the original document and an independent handwriting examination.””
I looked at Daniel's message.
“Where did you find it?””
“In Vanessa's private office. It was inside a folder marked Chicago Acquisition.””
My heart sank.
Then he sent another message.
Amara, there's a second page.
I opened it.
It contained a list of conditions.
The first involved access to my restaurant group's financial information.
The second involved Daniel's appointment as executive director of Carter Hospitality Holdings.
The third involved Lily.
I read it once.
Then again.
*Upon confirmation of Daniel Carter's paternity, the parties will cooperate to establish the beneficiary's primary residence within the Carter family household, subject to applicable legal approval.*
I couldn't breathe.
Evelyn read the paragraph over my shoulder.
“Amara, this is serious.””
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
“Tell me you didn't sign this.””
“I didn't.””
“Did you know about it?””
“No. I swear.””
“Then why is your name on it?””
“I don't know.””
I closed my eyes.
Then Daniel said something that made the entire room go silent.
“Amara, I found something else in Vanessa's office.””
“What?””
“A calendar entry.””
“For what?””
His voice trembled.
“It says Richard has arranged a meeting with a family court consultant next week.””
I stared at Evelyn.
Daniel continued.
“The meeting is titled…”
He stopped.
“Daniel?””
He swallowed.
“Lily Carter — Custody Strategy.””
May you like
And beneath that appointment was the name of the person Richard had hired to advise him.
*The attorney who had represented me during my divorce.*
