The Daughter They Erased / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2: The Secret Beneath the Crest

Clara’s first instinct was to run.

Not because Gabriel frightened her.

Because hope frightened her more.

Hope was dangerous.

Hope was what made people stay after they should leave.

Hope was what made her believe the man she loved would come back.

Hope was what made her believe someone would eventually tell Gabriel Ashford the truth.

And now he was standing in front of her.

The same man everyone told her was gone.

The same man she had cried for when she was alone.

The same man she had been forced to believe had abandoned her.

“Who gave you that blanket?”” Gabriel asked again.

His voice was lower this time.

Almost careful.

Clara looked at Emma.

The baby shifted slightly in her arms.

“She had it when she was born.””

Gabriel stared at the blanket.

“That isn’t possible.””

Clara’s lips parted.

“Why?””

Before Gabriel could answer, Derek stepped forward.

“Mr. Ashford, this woman is confused.””

The interruption was immediate.

Too immediate.

Gabriel turned his head slowly.

Derek stopped.

“You seem very interested in answering questions that weren’t asked of you.””

“I’m just trying to prevent a misunderstanding.””

“A misunderstanding?””

Gabriel’s eyes narrowed.

Derek forced a laugh.

“This woman is obviously distressed.””

Clara looked at Derek.

And something inside her broke.

Because she finally understood.

He wasn’t just trying to remove her from the building.

He was trying to hide her.

Gabriel saw that realization cross her face.

“What is your name?”” he asked her.

Clara hesitated.

“Clara.””

“Clara what?””

She looked away.

“Clara Bennett.””

The name meant nothing to the people standing nearby.

But Gabriel felt something he couldn’t explain.

A strange pull.

A memory trying to return.

“Why are you here?””

Clara’s eyes filled.

Because after everything, saying it out loud still hurt.

“I was told you could help me.””

Derek immediately stepped forward.

“Mr. Ashford—”

“Stop talking.””

The words cut through the entrance.

Derek went silent.

Clara looked at Gabriel.

“I didn’t know where else to go.””

“What did you need?””

She looked down at Emma.

“A job.””

The answer surprised him.

Not money.

Not revenge.

Not attention.

A job.

“I needed enough to feed her.””

Gabriel looked at the baby.

The tiny face.

The cream blanket.

The crest.

His mind raced.

There were only a few people who knew about that blanket.

Only a few people who had access to anything connected to the Ashford family history.

And none of them would admit to giving it away.

“Where did you get it?”” he asked.

Clara swallowed.

“Your mother gave it to me.””

The entrance became completely silent.

Gabriel felt the words hit him harder than any accusation could have.

“My mother?””

Clara nodded slowly.

“She told me it belonged to the Ashford family. She said one day you would understand.””

Gabriel stepped closer.

“My mother died three years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then how?””

Clara looked at him.

And for the first time, Gabriel saw something beyond exhaustion in her eyes.

Pain.

Deep, old pain.

“They told me you were dead.””

The sentence landed heavier than anything else.

Gabriel stopped moving.

“What?””

Clara’s voice shook.

“They said you died.””

Nobody spoke.

The guests behind Gabriel exchanged confused looks.

Derek looked like all the air had left his body.

Gabriel stared at Clara.

“Who told you that?””

Clara looked down.

“I don’t know who to believe anymore.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

Her eyes met his.

“Your family.””

Gabriel’s jaw tightened.

“My family told you I was dead?””

Clara nodded.

“They said there was an accident. They said you never knew about me.””

Gabriel looked away for a moment.

His entire life felt suddenly unfamiliar.

He had spent years believing certain things were facts.

His father’s decisions.

His mother’s final wishes.

The people around him.

The security of his own name.

Now one exhausted woman on a marble staircase had placed a crack through all of it.

Derek moved backward.

Only one step.

But Gabriel noticed.

He noticed because Derek had been watching the conversation too closely.

Because he wasn’t confused.

He was afraid.

“Derek,” Gabriel said.

The manager looked up.

“Yes?””

“How long have you worked for the Ashford family?””

Derek swallowed.

“Eight years.””

“And during those eight years, did you ever hear my name connected to Clara Bennett?””

“No.””

The answer came too fast.

Gabriel studied him.

“No?””

“No, sir.””

Clara hugged Emma tighter.

“They told me nobody would believe me.””

Gabriel looked at her.

“Who told you that?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then she whispered:

“Your father’s lawyer.””

The world seemed to slow.

Gabriel’s father had been dead for four years.

His legal team had managed the family estate during the transition.

They were trusted.

Respected.

Professional.

But now Gabriel wondered how many secrets had been hidden behind expensive suits and polite conversations.

Emma began to cry softly.

The sound brought Gabriel back.

He looked down at the child.

At the tiny face.

At the blanket carrying his family crest.

A thought entered his mind.

A thought so impossible that he almost rejected it.

But the truth had already found him.

“Clara,” he said quietly.

She looked up.

“What is her full name?””

Clara hesitated.

“Emma.””

Gabriel waited.

“Emma what?””

Tears slipped down Clara’s cheeks.

“Emma Ashford.””

The guests gasped.

Derek’s face went pale.

Gabriel didn’t move.

He simply stared at the child.

His child.

A daughter he never knew existed.

A daughter someone had hidden from him.

A daughter someone had allowed to suffer while he lived believing his life was complete.

Carefully, almost afraid to disturb the moment, Gabriel reached out.

“May I?””

Clara hesitated.

Then she placed Emma into his arms.

The baby settled against him as if she recognized something she had never known.

Gabriel looked down.

His expression changed.

The controlled businessman disappeared.

For a moment, he was just a father holding his daughter for the first time.

Then he looked up.

And whatever warmth had appeared vanished.

Derek was backing away.

Slowly.

Trying not to draw attention.

Trying to disappear.

Gabriel held Emma securely with one arm.

The guests watched in silence.

“Derek.””

The manager stopped.

Gabriel’s voice was cold now.

“Who told her I was dead?””

May you like

Derek said nothing.

And that silence was the answer.
