Chapter 3: The Lie That Built a Fortune
Derek Vale had always believed fear was something that happened to other people.
He had watched wealthy families panic when investments failed. He had watched employees beg for forgiveness after mistakes. He had watched desperate people stand outside buildings like the Ashford Crown Club, hoping someone powerful would notice them.
Derek never thought he would become one of them.
But now he stood beneath the bright lights of the club entrance with Gabriel Ashford staring at him like he was a locked door that needed to be opened.
And Gabriel had just found the key.
“Answer me.””
The command was quiet.
That was what made everyone nervous.
Gabriel wasn’t shouting.
He wasn’t making a scene.
He didn’t need to.
The room already belonged to him.
Derek looked around at the guests watching.
People who had spent years respecting him.
People who had trusted him with their private events, their security, their information.
He knew what they were seeing now.
Not a manager.
Not a professional.
A man hiding something.
“Mr. Ashford,” Derek said carefully, “I think emotions are running high.””
Gabriel looked down at Emma.
The baby was resting against his chest, unaware that her existence had just shattered the foundation of a family empire.
Then he looked back at Derek.
“You think?””
Derek forced himself to stand straight.
“I’m saying this woman has made serious accusations. We should handle this privately.””
Gabriel’s expression hardened.
“Interesting.””
“What is?””
“You didn’t deny them.””
The words cut deeper than Derek expected.
A few guests exchanged looks.
Clara stood near Gabriel, exhausted but watching everything.
For months, she had been told she was crazy.
For months, she had been told she misunderstood.
Now the man who had helped erase her life was struggling to explain himself.
Gabriel stepped toward Derek.
“Eight years ago, you were hired by my father’s estate management company.””
“Yes.””
“You were responsible for protecting family property.””
“Yes.””
“You had access to records, residences, private information.””
Derek nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Gabriel’s eyes sharpened.
“And somehow, a woman carrying my child appeared at my family’s door, and everyone involved decided I was dead.””
Derek remained silent.
That silence became louder than any confession.
Clara looked at Gabriel.
She saw something in him she had not expected.
Not just anger.
Pain.
Because the betrayal was bigger than her.
Someone had stolen years from him too.
“I waited,” Clara whispered.
Gabriel turned slightly.
“What?””
“I waited for you.””
Her voice trembled.
“I thought maybe you forgot. I thought maybe someone had convinced you that I wasn’t important.””
She looked down.
“I kept telling myself there had to be a reason.””
Gabriel’s face tightened.
“Clara…”
“I had Emma alone. I had people telling me I was chasing a dead man. I had people laughing at me.””
Her eyes filled.
“And I still believed you would come.””
The words stayed in the air.
Gabriel had spent his entire life surrounded by people who wanted something from him.
Money.
Connections.
Status.
But Clara had been waiting for him when she believed she had nothing to gain.
That realization hurt.
A lot.
Derek shifted.
“This is getting out of control.””
Gabriel looked at him.
“No. It’s finally getting under control.””
Derek’s confidence cracked.
“Mr. Ashford, you need to be careful. You don’t know this woman.””
Gabriel looked at Clara.
Then at Emma.
“I know enough.””
Derek shook his head.
“You’re letting emotion cloud your judgment.””
“No.””
Gabriel stepped closer.
“I’m finally seeing clearly.””
The club doors opened behind them.
A tall woman in her sixties stepped out, wearing a dark emerald dress and a pearl necklace.
Margaret Ashford.
Gabriel’s aunt.
One of the last people alive who knew the inner workings of the Ashford family.
Her face changed the moment she saw Clara.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
Gabriel noticed.
And that was the moment everything changed.
“Aunt Margaret.””
The woman froze.
“Gabriel.””
His voice became colder.
“You know her.””
Margaret looked at Clara.
Then at Emma.
Then away.
That was enough.
Gabriel’s stomach tightened.
“You knew.””
Margaret’s silence confirmed it.
Clara covered her mouth.
She had spent years wondering who was lying.
Now she was surrounded by people who had known the truth.
“How?”” Gabriel asked.
Margaret looked older suddenly.
“I was told not to interfere.””
“By who?””
She didn’t answer.
Gabriel’s voice sharpened.
“By who?””
Margaret looked toward Derek.
And Derek looked terrified.
That was the answer.
Gabriel turned slowly.
“Derek.””
The manager’s face lost all color.
“I had nothing to do with—”
“Stop.””
Gabriel raised his hand.
“I’m tired of hearing people explain what they didn’t do.””
The guests moved away quietly.
They understood something serious was happening.
Something that money could not cover.
Something that reputation could not erase.
Gabriel looked at Clara.
“Come with me.””
Clara hesitated.
“Where?””
“Somewhere private.””
She looked down at Emma.
“I don’t want trouble.””
Gabriel’s expression softened slightly.
“You already had trouble.””
May you like
He glanced at Derek.
“Now you’re getting answers.””
