Chapter 4: The Room Full of Secrets

The Ashford family office had always felt like a museum to Gabriel.

Beautiful.

Expensive.

Cold.

Every piece of furniture had a history. Every painting carried a name. Every shelf displayed a reminder of the family’s influence.

Tonight, for the first time, Gabriel saw it differently.

Not as a legacy.

As a hiding place.

Clara sat across from him on a leather chair, still holding Emma close.

The baby had finally fallen asleep.

Gabriel couldn’t stop looking at her.

Every few seconds, his eyes returned to her face.

Like he was afraid she might disappear.

Clara noticed.

“You really didn’t know?””

Gabriel looked up.

“No.””

She studied him.

“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””

“That makes two of us.””

The honesty surprised her.

For a man with his power, Gabriel could have pretended to have every answer.

Instead, he looked lost.

That made him more human.

“I need you to tell me everything,” he said.

Clara nodded slowly.

“I met you six years ago.””

Gabriel leaned forward.

“Where?””

“At your mother’s charity event.””

His eyes narrowed.

“My mother’s event?””

“Yes.””

A memory surfaced.

A young woman with a quiet smile.

Someone who didn’t seem impressed by his last name.

Someone who had challenged him.

Someone who had made him laugh when everyone else around him was trying to impress him.

Clara.

He remembered.

But he remembered something else too.

The disappearance.

The sudden message.

The claim that she had left.

“I was told you moved away,” Gabriel said.

Clara looked hurt.

“I was told you stopped looking for me.””

The silence between them was painful.

Both of them had been given different versions of the same lie.

“I was pregnant,” Clara said.

Gabriel closed his eyes briefly.

“When?””

“Three months after we met.””

His breathing changed.

“And you tried to tell me?””

“Every day.””

She looked down.

“I called your office. I emailed. I went to your home.””

Gabriel’s face hardened.

“Nobody told me.””

“I know.””

“How do you know?””

“Because I eventually stopped getting angry at you.””

That sentence hit him.

Clara continued.

“I realized someone was blocking me.””

Gabriel stood and walked toward the window.

The city stretched outside.

Millions of people living their lives.

While his daughter had been growing up somewhere he never knew.

“Who?””

Clara hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

“Clara.””

“I know what you want me to say.””

She looked at him.

“But I don’t know for sure.””

Gabriel turned.

“Tell me what you do know.””

She took a breath.

“The night I went to find you, I was stopped outside your building.””

“By who?””

“A security guard.””

Gabriel frowned.

“I don’t remember that.””

“Because you weren’t there.””

He froze.

“What?””

Clara’s eyes filled.

“They told me you were inside. They told me you refused to see me.””

Gabriel felt a chill.

“I wasn’t.””

“I know that now.””

She looked at Emma.

“But back then, I believed it.””

Gabriel walked back slowly.

“What happened after?””

“They gave me money.””

His expression changed.

“How much?””

“Enough to disappear.””

The room went quiet.

“Who gave it to you?””

Clara looked toward the door.

“Your father’s attorney.””

Gabriel’s jaw tightened.

“My father’s attorney was dead last year.””

“Yes.””

“But before that?””

“Yes.””

Gabriel understood.

A dead man could not defend himself.

A dead man could carry every secret with him.

He walked to the large desk in the corner and opened a drawer.

Inside were old documents from his father’s estate.

Files.

Contracts.

Records.

Things Gabriel had never questioned.

Because he trusted the people who prepared them.

Now he questioned everything.

He pulled out one folder.

Then another.

Clara watched him.

“What are you looking for?””

“The truth.””

He opened the first file.

Then stopped.

A document inside caught his attention.

His name.

Clara’s name.

A date.

And a signature.

Gabriel stared.

“No.””

Clara stood slowly.

“What?””

He looked at her.

For the first time that night, she saw real fear in his eyes.

Not anger.

Not suspicion.

Fear.

“Someone created a legal document proving you were never connected to me.””

Clara shook her head.

“That’s impossible.””

Gabriel lifted the paper.

“It has my father’s company seal.””

Her face went pale.

“Gabriel…”

He kept reading.

Then his expression changed.

Because at the bottom of the document was something even more disturbing.

A second signature.

Someone who was still alive.

Someone who had been standing in the club entrance moments earlier.

Gabriel slowly looked toward the door.

“Derek wasn’t protecting my family.””

Clara whispered:

“Then what was he doing?””

Gabriel folded the document.

May you like

“He was protecting the person who destroyed it.””

And somewhere outside that office, someone listening to every word realized Gabriel Ashford was no longer the man who could be fooled.
