The Daughter They Erased / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5: The Signature of a Betrayal

Gabriel had spent his entire life believing that power meant control.

Control over business decisions.

Control over negotiations.

Control over his emotions.

Control over the people who entered his world.

But standing in that office with a document proving someone had carefully erased his own daughter from his life, he realized something painful.

Control was an illusion.

The people closest to you were the ones who could hurt you the most.

Clara watched him closely.

She had seen anger before.

She had seen men become angry when they felt embarrassed or challenged.

This was different.

Gabriel wasn’t angry because his pride was wounded.

He was angry because someone had stolen years from a child who had done nothing wrong.

Emma slept peacefully in her mother’s arms, unaware that a piece of paper had just changed everything.

“Who signed it?”” Clara asked softly.

Gabriel didn’t answer immediately.

His eyes stayed on the bottom of the document.

The signature was clear.

Derek Vale.

Eight years working for the Ashford family.

Eight years gaining trust.

Eight years standing close enough to see everything.

“He signed this,” Gabriel finally said.

Clara’s face tightened.

“Derek?””

Gabriel nodded.

“He didn’t just know.””

He looked at the document again.

“He was involved.””

Clara sat down slowly.

For a moment, she looked like she might collapse.

Not because she was surprised.

Because part of her had known.

The hardest truths were often the ones we already felt coming.

“He always acted like I was nothing,” she whispered.

Gabriel looked at her.

“Did he ever threaten you?””

She shook her head.

“Not directly.””

“Then what?””

“He reminded me that nobody believed me.””

Gabriel’s expression darkened.

“That’s worse.””

Clara looked at him.

“What?””

“Because fear can make someone run.””

He placed the document on the desk.

“But convincing someone they’re invisible makes them stop fighting.””

The words stayed with her.

Because that was exactly what had happened.

After months of being ignored, questioned, and dismissed, Clara had started wondering if she was the problem.

If maybe she had misunderstood.

If maybe Gabriel truly wanted nothing to do with her.

That was the cruelty of the lie.

It didn’t just separate people.

It made them doubt themselves.

Gabriel walked to the bookshelf behind his desk and pulled out an old family record.

His father had been obsessed with documenting everything.

Every investment.

Every property.

Every agreement.

The Ashford name had been built on organization.

Which meant secrets had paperwork.

And paperwork could be found.

“I need access to the estate archives,” Gabriel said.

Clara looked confused.

“Can you?””

A bitter smile crossed his face.

“I own the company.””

“You sound like you’re not sure.””

Gabriel looked at the walls around him.

“I’ve spent years believing I knew what my family left behind.””

He opened another drawer.

“Now I’m wondering how much was hidden from me.””

Before Clara could respond, someone knocked.

Gabriel’s body immediately changed.

The businessman returned.

“Come in.””

The door opened.

A young assistant stepped inside.

“Mr. Ashford, I’m sorry to interrupt.””

“What is it?””

The assistant glanced at Clara, then at Emma.

“There’s a problem.””

Gabriel waited.

“Derek left the building.””

His expression hardened.

“When?””

“Five minutes ago.””

Gabriel looked toward the hallway.

“Did anyone stop him?””

The assistant hesitated.

“No.””

That answer bothered him.

Not because Derek escaped.

Because Derek was allowed to.

Someone had helped him.

Gabriel turned back.

“Lock down the building.””

The assistant nodded.

“And Mr. Ashford?””

“What?””

“There’s another issue.””

Gabriel waited.

“The security system shows Derek accessed the private archives before he left.””

The room went silent.

Clara looked at Gabriel.

“He went looking for something.””

Gabriel nodded.

“He wasn’t running.””

His eyes narrowed.

“He was cleaning up.””

Derek sat in the back of a black luxury vehicle three blocks away from the Ashford Crown Club.

His hands were shaking.

Not because he was afraid of Gabriel.

At least, that was what he told himself.

He was afraid of what Gabriel would find.

For years, Derek had been careful.

Careful with documents.

Careful with conversations.

Careful with who knew what.

But Clara appearing at the club entrance had destroyed everything.

The woman who was supposed to disappear forever had walked right back into the Ashford world.

And she had brought proof.

Derek stared at his phone.

One name sat on the screen.

A person he never wanted to call.

But he had no choice.

The call connected.

“You have a problem,” Derek said.

The voice on the other end was calm.

“You were supposed to prevent this.””

Derek swallowed.

“I tried.””

“You failed.””

“Gabriel found the blanket.””

A pause.

Then silence.

The kind of silence that scared Derek more than yelling.

“He knows?””

“He knows enough.””

The voice lowered.

“Then you need to fix it.””

Derek looked out the window.

“Fix it how?””

Another pause.

Then:

“You know what happens when people become inconvenient.””

Derek closed his eyes.

He did.

He had watched it happen before.

People removed from positions.

Reputations destroyed.

Lives quietly rearranged.

“Gabriel is not going to stop,” Derek said.

The voice answered immediately.

“Neither am I.””

The call ended.

Derek stared at his reflection in the dark window.

For the first time in years, he wondered if choosing the winning side had been his biggest mistake.
