The Daughter They Erased / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Truth That Could Not Stay Buried

Adrian followed Gabriel back to the Ashford residence.

Not because Gabriel invited him.

Because Gabriel wanted him where he could see him.

For years, Adrian had operated from shadows.

Now he would answer in the light.

Clara was awake when Gabriel returned.

One look at his face told her something had happened.

“What did you find?””

Gabriel stopped.

For a moment, he didn’t know how to say it.

How do you tell someone the person who helped destroy their life was family?

How do you explain that the monster hiding in the dark had the same last name?

Clara saw Adrian behind him.

Her face changed.

She recognized him.

“Wait.””

Adrian looked uncomfortable.

“You know him?””

Clara slowly nodded.

“He came to see me.””

Gabriel turned.

“When?””

“After Emma was born.””

The room went silent.

Gabriel looked at Adrian.

“You saw her?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

“Answer me.””

“Yes.””

Gabriel felt his chest tighten.

“You saw my daughter.””

Adrian looked down.

“Yes.””

“And you still walked away.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“Then tell me.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Adrian sat down.

For the first time, he looked less like a powerful businessman.

More like a man trapped by his own choices.

“Father was dying.””

Gabriel listened.

“He knew he didn’t have much time.””

Adrian looked at him.

“He was afraid you would change everything.””

Gabriel frowned.

“Change what?””

“The company.””

A bitter laugh escaped Adrian.

“He built his entire life around control. You wanted to modernize it. You wanted to give employees more power. You wanted to stop doing things his way.””

Gabriel nodded slowly.

“And that scared him.””

“Yes.””

Adrian looked at Clara.

“And then there was you.””

Clara’s face remained cold.

“You mean me?””

“You were proof Gabriel had something outside the family.””

Gabriel stared.

“That’s why?””

“No.””

Adrian shook his head.

“Not just that.””

He looked down.

“Father thought love made people weak.””

Gabriel’s voice was quiet.

“And you believed him.””

Adrian didn’t answer.

Because he did.

That was the worst part.

He had believed a man who taught him that winning mattered more than people.

Gabriel walked closer.

“You could have told me.””

“Yes.””

“You could have helped Clara.””

“Yes.””

“You could have protected my daughter.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty was almost harder to hear.

Clara looked at him.

“Why didn’t you?””

Adrian opened his eyes.

“Because I was afraid.””

Her expression changed.

“Afraid of what?””

“Of becoming nothing.””

The answer was quiet.

Real.

But it didn’t repair anything.

Gabriel understood something then.

People didn’t always destroy others because they hated them.

Sometimes they destroyed others because they were terrified of being left behind.

But the damage was still damage.

The pain was still pain.

Emma began crying from the next room.

The sound immediately changed Gabriel.

He walked away from Adrian.

Toward his daughter.

Clara watched him go.

And Adrian watched too.

“You love her,” Adrian said.

Gabriel stopped.

“Yes.””

Adrian nodded slowly.

“I never understood that.””

Gabriel looked back.

“That’s the difference between us.””

The words were not cruel.

Just true.

Later that night, Gabriel sat beside Emma’s crib.

He watched her sleep.

He thought about the years stolen from them.

He thought about Clara sitting alone.

He thought about every moment he missed.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

One sentence.

*Adrian didn’t act alone.*

Gabriel stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

*There is someone inside the Ashford company who knows where the original records are.*

He looked toward the hallway.

Toward Clara.

Toward Emma.

The truth was finally coming out.

But someone was still fighting to keep it buried.

And this time, Gabriel was ready.
