Chapter 2: The Man Everyone Saluted
Nia had always believed fear was something loud.
A scream.
A slammed door.
A person running away.
But Evelyn’s fear was silent.
It lived in the way her mother’s fingers trembled against her pearl necklace.
It lived in the way she looked at Victor Hale like she was seeing a nightmare walk into daylight.
Victor did not look away from Nia.
Not once.
“Who are you?”” Nia asked.
Her voice sounded stronger than she felt.
Victor studied her face.
“I think you already know I’m someone your mother didn’t want you to meet.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Victor, this is not the place.””
Victor finally looked at her.
And somehow that was worse.
Because there was no anger in his expression.
Only disappointment.
“Twenty years,” he said.
Evelyn’s jaw tightened.
“Please.””
Daniel stood nearby, clearly unsure whether he should intervene.
“Admiral?””
Reed remained silent.
That bothered Daniel more than anything.
Admiral Reed always had answers.
During emergencies, he gave commands.
During ceremonies, he controlled every detail.
But now he simply watched.
Like he was trying to understand how a moment from the past had suddenly appeared in front of him.
Nia noticed.
“Admiral Reed,” she said, “you know him?””
Reed looked at Victor.
Then at Nia.
“I knew of him.””
Victor gave a faint, humorless smile.
“That’s one way to say it.””
The crowd around them began whispering.
Nia could feel hundreds of eyes on her.
She hated that.
She hated that her life was becoming a public scene.
She stepped closer to Evelyn.
“You embarrassed me in front of everyone.””
Evelyn lowered her voice.
“Not here.””
“No.””
Nia shook her head.
“Actually, I think here is exactly where this needs to happen.””
Evelyn looked around.
Her concern was not for Nia.
It was for the audience.
That realization hurt.
“You always cared more about appearances than me,” Nia said.
A flash of emotion crossed Evelyn’s face.
Pain.
Then it disappeared.
“You don’t understand.””
Nia laughed softly.
“Everyone says that when they don’t want to explain themselves.””
Victor watched silently.
Finally, he said:
“Nia.””
She looked at him.
“There are things you deserve to know.””
Evelyn immediately stepped between them.
“No.””
The single word carried more power than a shout.
Victor looked at her.
“Still protecting the lie?””
Daniel looked between them.
“Lie?””
Nobody answered.
The ceremony continued in the background, but no one was paying attention anymore.
Nia folded her arms.
“My entire life, I was told there were things I wasn’t old enough to understand.””
She looked at Evelyn.
“I’m thirty-eight years old.””
Her voice cracked slightly.
“I think I’m old enough now.””
Evelyn looked away.
Victor reached into his jacket.
Daniel instinctively moved.
But Victor only pulled out a small, worn photograph.
He held it carefully.
Not like a weapon.
Like something fragile.
Nia saw it from a distance.
Her breath stopped.
The photograph showed a younger woman.
Evelyn.
But she was not alone.
There was a man beside her.
And in the man’s arms was a baby.
Nia.
She knew it instantly.
She knew because of the small silver bracelet around the baby’s wrist.
A bracelet she had kept in a drawer for years.
The one Evelyn always said had been a gift from a stranger.
Nia looked at Victor.
“Where did you get that?””
Victor’s expression changed.
“I gave it to you.””
The words hit harder than she expected.
Nia stared.
“What?””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Like she knew the moment she had feared had arrived.
Victor lowered the photograph.
“I was there the day you were born.””
The world seemed to tilt.
Nia looked at her mother.
“Mom?””
Evelyn remained silent.
That silence was an answer.
“No,” Nia whispered.
She shook her head.
“No, that’s not possible.””
Victor’s voice softened.
“I didn’t leave you.””
Nia looked at him.
“Then why did you disappear?””
Victor did not answer immediately.
His eyes moved to Evelyn.
And for the first time, Nia saw anger.
Not rage.
A deeper wound.
“Because someone made sure I never knew where you were.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“That is enough.””
Victor ignored her.
“Nia, there is something you need to understand about your family.””
A sharp sound interrupted him.
A phone ringing.
Everyone looked toward Evelyn.
She reached into her purse.
Her face changed when she saw the screen.
She answered quickly.
“Hello?””
She listened.
The blood drained from her face.
“What do you mean he knows?””
Nia heard the sentence.
Everyone heard it.
Victor’s expression hardened.
Admiral Reed looked suddenly concerned.
Daniel whispered:
“Who knows?””
Evelyn ended the call.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Victor looked past Nia toward the harbor entrance.
And quietly said:
“They found out.””
Nia turned.
“Who?””
May you like
Victor did not answer.
But the fear in Evelyn’s eyes returned.
