The Daughter They Erased / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9: The Truth They Buried

For twenty years, Nia had believed her life was a simple story.

A mother.

A missing father.

A childhood filled with unanswered questions.

She had never imagined the truth would be something that made powerful people afraid.

Now she stood beneath the American flag, surrounded by decorated officers, and realized something terrifying.

Everyone had been protecting a secret.

But nobody had been protecting her.

Nia looked at Thomas.

“You were there when I was born?””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His expression softened slightly.

“Because your mother and Victor were not the only ones involved.””

Victor stepped forward.

“Do not do this.””

Thomas looked at him.

“You had twenty years to tell her.””

Victor’s jaw tightened.

“I was trying to keep her safe.””

Thomas laughed quietly.

“Safe from the truth?””

Nia looked between them.

“Stop talking like I’m not standing here.””

Her voice cut through the tension.

“I want answers.””

No one moved.

Then Admiral Reed slowly removed his hat.

A gesture that surprised everyone.

“I think she deserves them.””

Victor looked at him.

“Marcus.””

Reed shook his head.

“No more secrets.””

He looked at Nia.

“The night you disappeared was the night everything changed.””

Nia waited.

Reed continued.

“Victor had uncovered evidence that someone was leaking classified information.””

Thomas smiled faintly.

“And everyone assumed it was a simple investigation.””

Victor looked at him.

“But it wasn’t.””

“No.””

Thomas looked at Nia.

“Because the person behind it was closer than anyone realized.””

Nia felt her stomach tighten.

“Who?””

Thomas looked toward Evelyn.

Her face turned pale.

“No.””

Nia whispered:

“Mom?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I never wanted you to know this way.””

“That means it’s true.””

Evelyn looked at Victor.

“I was afraid.””

Victor’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

“Afraid of me?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I was afraid of what would happen if people found out.””

Nia stepped closer.

“Found out what?””

Evelyn looked at her daughter.

And for the first time in decades, she stopped pretending.

“When Victor found the evidence, he didn’t realize someone else had already found him.””

Thomas looked down.

The confidence disappeared from his face.

Nia noticed.

“You?””

Thomas said nothing.

That was the answer.

Victor stared at him.

“You were behind it.””

Thomas looked away.

For the first time, he looked old.

“I made choices.””

“People died because of your choices.””

Thomas’s face hardened.

“And people were protected because of mine.””

Reed stepped forward.

“That is the excuse every traitor uses.””

The word hung in the air.

Traitor.

Thomas looked at him.

“You were always loyal to the uniform, Marcus.””

Reed replied quietly:

“And you were always loyal to yourself.””

Nia looked at Victor.

“Then why did you trust him?””

Victor’s eyes lowered.

Because that question hurt.

“Because he was my brother.””

Not by blood.

By everything else.

They had served together.

Fought together.

Built careers together.

And one day, Victor discovered the person standing beside him was the person destroying everything.

Nia looked at Thomas.

“So you took me?””

Thomas’s expression changed.

“No.””

Everyone became silent.

Nia frowned.

“No?””

Thomas shook his head.

“I never took you.””

Victor stared.

“Then who did?””

Thomas looked at Evelyn.

The silence was unbearable.

Nia turned slowly.

“Mom?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“I found out Thomas was after you.””

Nia’s voice became quiet.

“Why me?””

Evelyn looked at Victor.

“Because you were proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Evelyn swallowed.

“That Victor had someone worth destroying him for.””

Nia felt something break inside her.

She had spent her life believing she was abandoned.

But the truth was worse.

She had been used as a weapon.

“I was a target.””

Victor immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

Nia looked at him.

“Yes.””

Her voice cracked.

“I was.””

Victor shook his head.

“You were my daughter.””

Thomas interrupted.

“And that was exactly why they could use you.””

Nia looked at him.

“They?””

Thomas was silent.

That was the first time he looked uncertain.

Admiral Reed noticed.

“Who else was involved?””

Thomas looked away.

“Nobody.””

Reed stepped closer.

“Thomas.””

The warning in his voice was clear.

Thomas smiled.

“You still think you’re in control.””

Then he reached into his jacket.

Daniel immediately moved.

“Hands where I can see them.””

Thomas ignored him.

But he did not pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a small envelope.

And handed it to Nia.

“This is the last piece.””

Victor’s face changed.

“No.””

Nia looked at him.

“What is it?””

Victor whispered:

“Something I hoped you would never have to see.””

She took the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

Her.

At age five.

Standing beside Victor.

But Nia had never seen the picture before.

She stared.

“I don’t remember this.””

Thomas said quietly:

“Because it was taken after you were supposed to disappear.””

Nia looked up.

“What?””

Victor looked broken.

“That’s impossible.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Evelyn.

“You remember.””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

And Nia understood.

Her mother did remember.

She had just hidden it.

Nia looked at Evelyn.

“Where was this taken?””

Evelyn whispered:

“At a safe house.””

“Why was I there?””

Evelyn’s tears finally fell.

“Because I brought you there.””

Nia stepped back.

“You said you took me to protect me.””

“I did.””

“Then why was I with my father?””

Evelyn looked at Victor.

“Because for three days…”

Her voice broke.

“Your father had you back.””

Victor froze.

Nia stared.

“Three days?””

Nobody moved.

Then Victor whispered:

“I never knew.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“I know.””

Nia’s heart pounded.

“What happened after three days?””

Evelyn looked toward the ocean.

And the answer came out almost too quietly to hear.

“Someone came for you.””

A cold silence spread.

“Who?””

Evelyn looked at Thomas.

And Thomas finally stopped pretending.

His face changed.

Because he knew the truth was coming.

Evelyn whispered:

“The person who ordered it was not Thomas.””

Victor looked shocked.

Reed stepped forward.

“Then who?””

Evelyn looked at the officers around them.

At the uniforms.

At the ceremony.

At the institution she had spent twenty years fearing.

Then she said:

“The highest-ranking person in the entire operation.””

Nia felt numb.

“Who?””

Evelyn looked directly at Admiral Reed.

May you like

And Reed’s expression changed.

Because he already knew.
