The Daughter They Erased / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Name That Changed Everything

The man introduced himself with a smile.

“Thomas Vale.””

Nia watched the officers around him.

No one moved.

No one challenged him.

That frightened her more than anything.

“You know him,” she said to Reed.

The admiral’s silence answered.

Victor’s voice was low.

“He was my closest friend.””

Thomas smiled.

“Once.””

Victor stepped forward.

“You destroyed everything.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No. I revealed what was already broken.””

Nia looked at him.

“Why do you know who I am?””

Thomas looked almost amused.

“Because everyone knows who you are.””

The sentence made no sense.

Nia frowned.

“I grew up in a small town. Nobody knew me.””

Thomas tilted his head.

“That’s what your mother wanted you to believe.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Thomas looked at her.

“Still pretending you saved her?””

The pain on Evelyn’s face was immediate.

Nia noticed.

“Mom?””

Thomas continued.

“You should ask your mother why she changed your name.””

Nia felt frozen.

“She changed my name?””

Victor looked away.

Reed closed his eyes.

Too many secrets.

Too many people protecting the same truth.

Nia turned to Evelyn.

“Tell me.””

Evelyn whispered:

“Nia…”

“Tell me.””

Her mother looked defeated.

“When I took you, I changed your name because Hale was dangerous.””

Nia stared.

“You changed my entire identity.””

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

Thomas laughed.

“Everyone says that when they rewrite someone’s life.””

Victor looked at him.

“You don’t get to act innocent.””

Thomas’s smile disappeared.

For the first time, his mask slipped.

“You think you’re the only one who lost something?””

The air became tense.

Victor and Thomas stared at each other.

Two men carrying twenty years of hatred.

Then Thomas looked at Nia.

“There is something else you should know.””

Victor immediately said:

“No.””

Nia looked at him.

“What?””

Thomas smiled.

“Your father didn’t just lose you.””

Victor’s expression changed.

“He lost the truth about what happened the night you disappeared.””

Nia felt her heartbeat increase.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

Thomas stepped closer.

“Ask your mother.””

Evelyn looked terrified.

Nia turned.

“Mom?””

Evelyn whispered:

“I didn’t know.””

Thomas laughed.

“That’s the one thing you still believe.””

Nia looked between them.

She felt like the ground beneath her was disappearing.

“Someone tell me.””

Her voice broke.

“What happened that night?””

Victor looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn looked at the ocean.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“You were never taken from Victor.””

Silence.

Nia stopped breathing.

“What?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“You were taken from both of us.””

Victor stared at her.

“What are you saying?””

Evelyn looked at Nia.

“I lied about one thing.””

The harbor went silent.

“What?””

Evelyn’s voice shook.

“I told everyone you disappeared because I was protecting you.””

She swallowed.

“But the truth is…”

A pause.

“I was protecting someone else.””

Nia felt cold.

“Who?””

Evelyn looked toward Thomas.

And Thomas smiled.

Nia slowly turned.

Thomas removed his sunglasses.

And for the first time, she saw his eyes clearly.

They were familiar.

Too familiar.

Victor noticed her expression.

“Nia?””

She whispered:

“Why does he look at me like he knows me?””

Nobody answered.

Then Thomas said:

“Because I was there the night you were born.””

Nia stared.

Victor’s face changed.

“No.””

Thomas smiled.

“And there’s something your father never knew.””

He stepped closer.

“The reason your mother hid you…”

A pause.

“The reason Victor searched for twenty years…”

Another pause.

“Was because you were never just his daughter.””

Nia’s heart raced.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas looked at her.

“It means the truth about your birth could destroy everyone standing here.””

The harbor wind moved.

The limousine remained behind them.

Admiral Reed watched in shock.

Evelyn looked terrified.

Victor stood frozen.

And Nia realized the secret buried for twenty years was not about where she had been.

It was about who she really was.
