The Daughter They Erased / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5: The File That Should Never Exist

Nia stared at the sealed folder in Admiral Reed’s hands.

She had spent twenty years being told there were no answers.

Now answers were standing in front of her.

And everyone looked afraid of them.

“Give it to me,” Nia said.

Victor’s hand slowly released her wrist.

“Nia…”

“No.””

Her voice was calm.

That surprised everyone.

“No more warnings. No more protecting me from the truth. Every person here has had a choice for twenty years.””

She looked at Evelyn.

“You chose silence.””

Then Victor.

“You chose to search.””

Then Reed.

“You chose to watch.””

Her eyes moved to the folder.

“So now I choose.””

Admiral Reed looked at Victor.

For several seconds, neither man spoke.

Finally, Reed handed her the folder.

It was heavier than it looked.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

The label on the front was simple.

CARTER, NIA — CLASSIFIED RECORD

Nia’s breathing changed.

“Classified?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Ma’am…”

Nia opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

Her.

As a baby.

But not the photograph Victor had shown earlier.

This one was different.

It was taken inside a military facility.

She recognized the bracelet around her wrist.

The same silver bracelet.

The same one she had kept hidden in her bedroom drawer.

Below the photograph was a document.

Her eyes scanned the first lines.

Then stopped.

Her face lost color.

“What?””

Victor moved closer.

“Nia?””

She looked up.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“My name wasn’t always Carter.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Daniel looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Nia turned the page.

The words blurred.

Because suddenly the entire life she remembered felt like someone else’s story.

The document listed her birth information.

Her original surname.

The one she had never heard before.

Hale.

Victor went completely still.

Evelyn looked away.

Nia looked between them.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“No, that’s not possible.””

Victor’s voice softened.

“It is.””

She looked at him.

“You knew?””

“I knew your name.””

The answer hurt.

“You knew my name and you let me grow up not knowing who I was?””

Victor looked devastated.

“I spent years trying to find you.””

“But you knew.””

He had no response.

That silence was enough.

Nia stepped back.

The harbor suddenly felt too open.

Too bright.

She wanted darkness.

A place where nobody could see her breaking.

Claire watched quietly.

Then she said:

“Nia, there’s more.””

Nia laughed bitterly.

“Of course there is.””

She held up the file.

“My entire life is apparently one long missing chapter.””

Claire walked closer.

“The file was created after the incident.””

Nia looked at her.

“What incident?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Admiral Reed spoke.

“Twenty years ago, there was an operation that changed several careers in the Navy.””

Victor looked at him.

“Marcus.””

Reed ignored the warning.

“Nia’s disappearance was connected to it.””

Nia froze.

“My disappearance?””

Evelyn finally spoke.

“I didn’t take you because I wanted to hurt you.””

Everyone looked at her.

For the first time, Evelyn looked exhausted.

Not cold.

Not perfect.

Just tired.

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

Nia stared.

“From who?””

Evelyn looked toward Victor.

Victor’s jaw tightened.

That reaction told Nia everything.

“From him?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

A long silence followed.

“From the people who wanted to destroy him.””

Victor looked away.

Claire stepped forward.

“Your father discovered something.””

Nia looked at Victor.

“What?””

Claire lowered her voice.

“Something inside the Navy.””

Daniel immediately looked uncomfortable.

“Ma’am, careful.””

But Claire continued.

“He found evidence of corruption involving people with power.””

Victor’s expression hardened.

“And when they realized I had proof…”

He stopped.

Nia waited.

“They came after my family.””

The word family sounded strange.

Because Nia had spent her whole life believing she did not have one.

Evelyn looked at the ground.

“I thought the only way to protect her was to make sure nobody knew where she was.””

Nia’s eyes filled.

“You didn’t protect me.””

Evelyn looked up.

“You erased me.””

The words hurt more than shouting.

Evelyn had no answer.

A sudden noise interrupted them.

A phone ringing.

Everyone turned.

It was Admiral Reed’s phone.

He answered immediately.

“Reed speaking.””

His expression changed within seconds.

“What?””

Daniel watched him.

“Sir?””

Reed looked toward the entrance.

Then at Nia.

“No one leaves.””

The command was immediate.

Nia felt cold.

“What happened?””

Reed lowered the phone.

“The person who leaked this file wasn’t trying to expose the past.””

Victor stepped forward.

“Then what were they doing?””

Reed looked at him.

“They were sending a message.””

A pause.

“To whoever is still protecting Nia.””

The wind moved across the harbor.

Nia looked around.

For the first time, she understood something.

The secret was not buried because it was embarrassing.

May you like

It was buried because someone wanted it to stay alive.

And someone else wanted it dead.
