The Daughter They Erased / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Ceremony

The ceremony was supposed to be a celebration.

A day of honor.

A day of medals, speeches, and proud families standing beside their loved ones.

Instead, Nia stood in the center of a storm she did not understand.

The American flag moved above her.

The Navy officers remained frozen around her.

And every person who seemed to know the truth refused to say it.

Nia hated that feeling.

Being the only person without the missing piece.

She looked at Admiral Reed.

“You know what’s happening.””

Reed hesitated.

That hesitation told her everything.

“Admiral?””

He looked older suddenly.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

“I know there are questions that should have been answered a long time ago.””

Nia stepped closer.

“Then answer them.””

Reed glanced toward Victor.

Victor gave a small nod.

Like he was allowing him to speak.

Reed exhaled.

“Your father was one of the most respected officers in naval history.””

Nia’s chest tightened.

“My father?””

Evelyn immediately interrupted.

“Marcus.””

Reed looked at her.

“No more.””

The firmness in his voice shocked everyone.

Even Evelyn.

Reed continued.

“Victor Hale served this country for over thirty years. He protected people who never knew his name. He made decisions that saved lives.””

Victor looked away.

“That was a long time ago.””

Reed shook his head.

“No. It was not.””

Nia watched them.

There was history here.

History everyone had agreed to hide from her.

“Why did nobody tell me?””

Nobody answered.

Her eyes moved to Evelyn.

“Why?””

Evelyn finally spoke.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

Nia stared.

“Protect me from what?””

Evelyn’s face tightened.

“You think knowing everything would have made your life better?””

“My life was built on a lie.””

The words landed.

Evelyn looked wounded.

But Nia no longer knew if she could trust that wound.

“You took my father away from me.””

Evelyn whispered:

“You don’t know the whole story.””

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

Again.

Always silence.

Victor looked at Evelyn.

“You never changed.””

Evelyn turned sharply.

“And you still think you were the hero.””

Victor’s expression darkened.

“I never said that.””

“No,” Evelyn replied.

“You just let everyone believe it.””

Daniel watched the exchange.

He looked uncomfortable.

“Sir,” he said to Reed, “should we clear the area?””

Reed looked around.

The guests were watching.

Phones were slowly being raised.

The private family conflict was becoming public.

Reed nodded.

“Move the guests back.””

Officers immediately began guiding people away.

Nia barely noticed.

Her entire world had narrowed to three people.

Her mother.

Victor.

And the truth she had spent her entire life missing.

Victor looked at her.

“There is a reason your mother erased me.””

Nia waited.

He continued.

“Because I was supposed to be there.””

Her eyes filled.

Not with sadness.

With anger.

“That doesn’t answer anything.””

“No.””

Victor looked down.

“It doesn’t.””

For the first time, he seemed uncertain.

Human.

“I made mistakes.””

Nia looked surprised.

She had expected excuses.

Not honesty.

“What kind of mistakes?””

Before Victor could answer, Evelyn stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Nia turned.

“Why are you afraid of him telling me?””

Evelyn’s eyes met hers.

And for a second, Nia saw the woman she remembered from childhood.

Not the cold woman from the ceremony.

Her mother.

A woman carrying something heavy.

“Because once you know,” Evelyn whispered, “you will never look at me the same way again.””

Nia felt a chill.

“What did you do?””

Evelyn said nothing.

Victor closed his eyes briefly.

Then Daniel’s radio suddenly crackled.

“Officer Daniel, report. We have an unexpected arrival at the east entrance.””

Daniel lifted his radio.

“Who?””

A pause.

Then the voice answered:

“A group requesting access. They claim it concerns Admiral Hale.””

Everyone looked at Victor.

Nia noticed something.

Victor was no longer surprised.

He was prepared.

Admiral Reed stepped closer.

“Victor.””

Victor looked toward the entrance.

“They came faster than I expected.””

Nia’s heart raced.

“Who came?””

Victor looked at her.

And the sadness in his eyes frightened her more than anger would have.

“People who know what happened twenty years ago.””

The officers at the entrance moved.

The crowd grew quiet.

Then Daniel’s radio sounded again.

This time, the message was different.

Short.

Urgent.

“Admiral Reed… the visitor has identified herself.””

Reed’s face changed.

Nia noticed.

“Who is it?””

Reed looked toward the entrance.

May you like

And quietly said:

“That’s impossible.””
