Chapter 12: The Woman Who Started It All
I stared at the message until the screen dimmed.
Then I read it again.
And again.
“You still don’t know the entire truth about Ethan’s signature.””
My first instinct was anger.
My second was fear.
Not fear of losing.
I had already lost the life I thought I had.
Fear came from realizing there was still something hidden.
Something I had missed.
Rachel noticed my expression.
“Nia?””
I looked up.
“I received a message.””
Adrian immediately stepped closer.
“From who?””
I showed them the screen.
Rachel’s expression changed.
A small change.
But I saw it.
“You know this number?””
She didn’t answer.
That told me enough.
“Rachel.””
She sighed.
“I was hoping we wouldn’t have to involve her.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Before Rachel could respond, my phone rang.
The same number.
I answered.
Nobody spoke for three seconds.
Then a woman’s voice whispered:
“Nia.””
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
Everyone knew that voice.
The voice from the beginning of the story.
The person connected to everything.
“Vanessa?””
Silence.
Then:
“I need to tell you the truth.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“You already did.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“You know what Ethan did.””
A pause.
“You don’t know what happened before.””
I looked at Rachel.
She avoided my eyes.
That scared me more.
“Where are you?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Somewhere Ethan can’t reach me.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
Her voice became softer.
“It’s a warning.””
The line went quiet.
Then she said:
“Ethan didn’t find me.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He was introduced to me.””
My heart slowed.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying the affair wasn’t the beginning.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What was?””
Vanessa whispered:
“The deal.””
I looked toward Adrian.
He understood immediately.
“What deal?””
Vanessa continued.
“The one Ethan signed before he ever met me.””
I closed my eyes.
Three months.
The signature.
The transfer.
The documents.
Everything connected.
But how?
“Who made the deal?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Then I heard her breathing change.
Like someone else was nearby.
“Nia, listen carefully.””
Her voice became urgent.
“You think Ethan betrayed you.””
A pause.
“But someone taught him how.””
The call ended.
I stood there frozen.
For years, I believed Ethan’s biggest weakness was his ego.
His arrogance.
His need to be admired.
But what if someone had been feeding that weakness?
What if someone had been guiding him?
Rachel finally spoke.
“There’s something I should have told you.””
I turned.
“What?””
She looked uncomfortable.
“Before I became your attorney, I worked for Ethan.””
“I know.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You know I represented his company.””
A pause.
“You don’t know I advised him during the original Halcyon acquisition.””
I stared.
“And?””
Rachel took a breath.
“And I wasn’t the only advisor.””
The hallway felt colder.
“Who else?””
Rachel looked down.
“His father.””
That name changed everything.
Ethan’s father.
The man who built the foundation of Carter Holdings.
The man who died five years earlier.
The man Ethan spent his entire life trying to impress.
“What does he have to do with this?””
Rachel answered quietly.
“Everything.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Nia.””
I looked at him.
“There’s something you need to see.””
He handed me a small envelope.
No logo.
No name.
Just my name written across the front.
My hands went still.
“Where did you get this?””
Adrian’s expression was serious.
“It was delivered this morning.””
“By who?””
He paused.
“Someone who said Ethan’s father wanted you to have it.””
I stared at the envelope.
That was impossible.
Ethan’s father had been dead for years.
Unless…
Unless this wasn’t about the past.
Unless someone had been waiting.
I opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
A photograph of Ethan.
Me.
And another person standing behind us.
Someone I recognized immediately.
Someone who had been part of our lives before everything changed.
On the back of the photo, there was one sentence:
*“Ask Ethan why he never told you who really owned Carter Holdings.””*
I looked up.
Because suddenly the resort wasn’t the biggest secret.
The company wasn’t the biggest secret.
Even the affair wasn’t the biggest secret.
The biggest secret was the foundation of our entire marriage.

And somewhere in this city, someone had been protecting that secret for years.
Someone who was finally ready to reveal it.
