Chapter 6: The Secret Behind the Transfer
The title on the document changed everything.
Ethan stared at the page.
His breathing became uneven.
I had seen Ethan angry before.
I had seen him frustrated.
I had seen him under pressure during billion-dollar negotiations.
But I had never seen him look afraid of information.
“What is this?”” he whispered.
Rachel didn’t answer immediately.
She let him read.
That was the difference between us.
I didn’t need to convince Ethan anymore.
The truth could speak for itself.
His eyes moved down the page.
Then stopped.
“Impossible.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“What?””
He ignored her.
“No.””
His voice became quieter.
“This can’t be right.””
Adrian stood beside me.
“It is.””
Ethan looked up.
“How long?””
Rachel folded her hands.
“Long enough.””
The answer made his expression collapse.
“You knew.””
Rachel looked at me.
Then back at him.
“Mrs. Carter discovered irregularities in the company records.””
Vanessa frowned.
“What irregularities?””
Ethan finally looked at her.
And for the first time, she saw the full picture.
The resort.
The documents.
The transfer.
None of it had started because of jealousy.
Nia hadn’t walked into the lobby because she wanted revenge.
She had walked in because she had already saved what he was about to lose.
Rachel continued.
“She noticed several financial movements that did not match company reports.””
Ethan shook his head.
“That’s not possible.””
“It was.””
“Who?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Because Ethan’s face changed before she said the name.
The realization arrived.
Slowly.
Painfully.
“Vanessa…”
Vanessa stepped back.
“What?””
He looked at her.
Not with love.
Not with anger.
With confusion.
A terrible kind of confusion.
“No.””
Vanessa’s voice became defensive.
“No, don’t look at me like that.””
Rachel opened another page.
“We traced several approvals connected to executive accounts.””
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
“You said you handled those reports.””
She crossed her arms.
“I did.””
“Then explain.””
“I don’t have to explain anything.””
Her confidence returned for a moment.
But nobody believed it anymore.
Adrian looked at Ethan.
“The person you trusted with access to internal operations was not protecting your company.””
Ethan’s face went pale.
“You’re lying.””
I watched him.
Even now.
Even after everything.
Part of him still wanted the easiest answer.
The answer where Vanessa was innocent.
The answer where I was the enemy.
The answer where he didn’t have to face what he had created.
Rachel slid another document forward.
“This contains the audit findings.””
Ethan didn’t touch it.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
The question was directed at me.
Finally.
After all this time.
He was asking.
I looked at him.
“Because you wouldn’t have listened.””
His face tightened.
“That’s not true.””
“Isn’t it?””
Silence.
I stepped closer.
“When I asked about the missing reports, you told me I was being paranoid.””
He looked away.
“When I asked why Vanessa suddenly had so much influence, you told me I didn’t understand business.””
Another step.
“When I tried to warn you that something felt wrong, you said I was emotional.””
The memories hurt.
But they no longer controlled me.
“You didn’t want the truth, Ethan.””
My voice softened.
“You wanted me to stay quiet.””
He looked down.
For once, he had no defense.
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“This is ridiculous.””
Everyone turned.
She grabbed her purse.
“I’m leaving.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Vanessa.””
She stopped.
But didn’t turn around.
“I came here because you promised me a future.””
Her voice cracked slightly.
“You promised me everything.””
A painful silence followed.
Then she looked back.
“And now I find out you weren’t even in control of your own company.””
Ethan flinched.
Because she had said the one thing everyone was thinking.
Vanessa walked toward the glass doors.
Then stopped beside me.
For a moment, I thought she might say something cruel.
Instead, she whispered:
“I didn’t know.””
I looked at her.
Maybe she was lying.
Maybe she wasn’t.
But it didn’t matter anymore.
The damage was already done.
She left.
The doors closed behind her.
Ethan remained standing in the middle of the lobby.
Alone.
A few hours earlier, he had arrived at the resort believing he was about to start a new chapter.
Now he was standing in the ruins of the old one.
Adrian turned toward me.
“Mrs. Carter, there’s still one thing you haven’t shown him.””
I looked at him.
I knew exactly what he meant.
Ethan noticed.
“What?””
I held the folder tighter.
His eyes moved from Adrian to me.
“What else is there?””
I didn’t answer.
Because this was the part I had protected for three months.
The part that would change how Ethan saw everything.
The part that would explain why I never confronted him.
Why I waited.
Why I walked into that lobby today instead of leaving quietly.
Adrian opened the final envelope.
And placed it on the counter.
Ethan looked down.
Then he saw the date.
His face changed.
Because the date was from before the affair began.
Before Vanessa.
Before the lies.
Before he thought he had lost me.
And written at the top of the page were five words:
*“Original Beneficiary: Carter Family Trust.””*
Ethan looked at me.
“Nia…”
May you like
His voice broke.
“What did you save?””
