Chapter 2: The Signature He Forgot

Ethan stared at the document like it was written in another language.

The lobby around us continued moving.

A waiter carried champagne glasses past the reception desk.

A family laughed near the ocean windows.

A couple took photos beneath the golden chandelier.

The world kept going.

But Ethan Carter looked like his had stopped.

“That’s impossible,” he whispered.

Adrian remained silent.

I watched my husband’s eyes move across the page again and again.

The same way someone looks at a nightmare, hoping the details will change if they stare long enough.

They didn’t.

His signature was there.

Clear.

Official.

Final.

Ethan looked up.

“What the hell is this?””

His voice was louder now.

People began glancing over.

Vanessa stepped closer to him.

“Ethan?””

He ignored her.

His focus stayed on me.

“You knew about this?””

I held the folder against my stomach.

The baby inside me moved slightly.

A tiny reminder that even in the middle of betrayal, life was still continuing.

“I knew enough.””

His eyebrows pulled together.

“What does that mean?””

Before I answered, Adrian spoke.

“The acquisition agreement was completed three months ago.””

Ethan turned sharply.

“Three months?””

“Yes.””

Adrian’s voice was calm.

“Your authorization was provided at the time of transfer.””

Ethan laughed once.

A nervous, confused sound.

“No. I would remember signing something like this.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Would you?””

That question landed harder than an accusation.

Ethan opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Because somewhere in his memory, something was beginning to return.

A meeting.

A stack of documents.

A late night at his office.

A rushed conversation.

I watched the realization slowly crawl across his face.

Not the full truth.

Not yet.

Just enough.

Vanessa noticed it too.

“What aren’t you telling us?””

She looked between Ethan and me.

Then at Adrian.

“You’re saying Ethan accidentally gave away this entire resort?””

“No,” Adrian replied.

“He didn’t accidentally do anything.””

Ethan’s face hardened.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian looked at me.

I gave him a small nod.

Then he turned back.

“It means every signature has a reason.””

The words hung in the air.

Ethan looked at me.

“You planned this.””

I didn’t answer.

That bothered him more than if I had screamed.

Because Ethan knew me.

He knew I wasn’t someone who acted without thinking.

He knew I was patient.

Careful.

The same woman who spent years helping him build an empire while staying behind the scenes.

The same woman everyone underestimated.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“So now you work with billionaires?””

Her laugh was sharp.

“You expect us to believe this just happened?””

I looked at her.

For the first time, I truly looked at her.

Not as the woman who hurt me.

But as the woman who thought she had already won.

“No,” I said quietly.

Her smile faded.

“No?””

I shook my head.

“You shouldn’t believe anything without reading the documents.””

Adrian almost smiled.

Almost.

Ethan noticed.

His expression darkened.

“Why is he here?””

I looked toward Adrian.

The question was simple.

But the answer carried more weight than Ethan understood.

Adrian Cole was not a random businessman.

He was one of the most successful CEOs in America.

Someone whose name appeared on magazine covers and financial reports.

Someone who did not personally attend ordinary acquisitions.

Yet he was standing beside me.

Holding my future in his hands.

Adrian answered.

“Because Mrs. Carter requested my presence.””

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“Mrs. Carter?””

The title bothered him.

Not because it was incorrect.

Because he suddenly realized the world was seeing me differently.

Not as Ethan Carter’s wife.

But as Nia Carter.

A woman with her own name.

Her own power.

Her own empire.

Vanessa reached for Ethan’s hand.

He pulled away without thinking.

The movement was small.

But she noticed.

Her face changed.

“You’re scared.””

Ethan looked at her.

“I’m trying to understand.””

“No,” Vanessa whispered.

“You’re scared because you don’t understand.””

The tension between them was no longer hidden.

And for the first time, Ethan looked at Vanessa the way he looked at a problem.

Not a partner.

Not a future.

A problem.

I closed the folder.

“Adrian.””

“Yes?””

“Show him the next page.””

Ethan immediately stepped forward.

“Wait.””

I looked at him.

The man who once walked into every room believing he owned it.

The man who thought money could protect him from consequences.

“What?””

His voice softened.

Almost pleading.

“What’s on that page?””

I held his gaze.

“You’ll find out.””

Adrian turned the document.

The page flipped.

And Ethan saw the second signature waiting underneath.

His own handwriting.

His own approval.

May you like

But this time, there was something written beside it.

Something that made the color drain completely from his face.
