Chapter 5: The Price of His Betrayal
Ethan read the document three times.
The first time, he looked confused.
The second time, he looked angry.
The third time, he looked defeated.
That was when I knew he finally understood.
The resort was never the real punishment.
It was only the beginning.
“What did you do?”” Vanessa asked.
Her voice was different now.
No longer playful.
No longer confident.
She sounded afraid.
Ethan ignored her.
He looked at Rachel.
“You knew about this clause?””
Rachel nodded.
“I wrote it.””
His eyes widened.
“You wrote it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Rachel looked at me.
The answer was obvious.
Because I asked her to.
But she didn’t say that.
Not yet.
“I wrote it because your company required protection.””
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“Protection from who?””
Rachel held his gaze.
“From people who make reckless decisions.””
The insult was subtle.
But Ethan felt every word.
He threw the document onto the counter.
“This is insane.””
Adrian picked it up calmly.
“No. It’s standard.””
“For a divorce?””
“No.””
Adrian looked at him.
“For betrayal.””
The word landed.
Vanessa stepped back slightly.
Nobody spoke.
The bright resort lobby suddenly felt colder.
I remembered the night I found the first clue.
Not proof.
Just a feeling.
A change.
The way Ethan started turning his phone face down.
The way he stopped telling me about his schedule.
The way he smiled at strangers but looked exhausted when he came home.
I didn’t accuse him.
Not immediately.
Because sometimes the truth reveals itself when you stop chasing it.
And Ethan had revealed everything.
Not through words.
Through patterns.
Through choices.
Through the belief that I would always be there.
He had forgotten something important.
A person can forgive many things.
But they rarely forgive being treated like they are too weak to notice.
“Nia.””
His voice pulled me back.
I looked at him.
He looked smaller now.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
The confidence was gone.
“What happens now?””
It was the first honest question he had asked all day.
I looked at Rachel.
She answered.
“The ownership transfer remains valid.””
Ethan swallowed.
“And?””
Rachel didn’t soften it.
“And any attempt to challenge it will trigger a full review of your business activities over the last eighteen months.””
His face changed.
“What does that mean?””
“It means every financial decision connected to Carter Holdings will be examined.””
Vanessa immediately looked at Ethan.
“Why would they examine your company?””
He didn’t answer.
Because now she was asking the questions I had been asking silently for months.
Rachel opened another folder.
“There are concerns regarding unauthorized use of corporate funds.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“Unauthorized use?””
Ethan looked at Rachel.
“Stop.””
The word came out sharp.
But it wasn’t authority anymore.
It was desperation.
Rachel didn’t stop.
“There are several luxury expenses connected to accounts that were not approved through normal channels.””
Vanessa’s face slowly changed.
She understood.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
Her voice dropped.
“You told me everything was fine.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Vanessa.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You told me you were leaving her.””
I watched Ethan’s face.
A tiny movement.
A pause.
That was all it took.
Because Vanessa saw it too.
“You never were.””
The silence answered for him.
Vanessa laughed.
But there was no happiness in it.
“I was stupid.””
“No.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Vanessa—”
She raised her hand.
“Don’t.””
For the first time, she looked at me.
Not with arrogance.
Not with competition.
With shame.
“I thought I knew what kind of man you were.””
I looked at Ethan.
“So did I.””
The words hurt him more than anger would have.
Because they were true.
Adrian quietly placed a hand near the folder.
“Nia.””
I looked at him.
“There’s one final document.””
Ethan immediately reacted.
“Another one?””
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.””
His face tightened.
“What now?””
Rachel opened the folder.
“This document explains why Mrs. Carter requested the transfer in the first place.””
Ethan stared.
“You mean this wasn’t about the affair?””
I didn’t answer.
Because the affair was only the surface.
The deeper betrayal was something else.
Something Ethan still didn’t know.
Rachel turned the document around.
The title was visible.
Ethan read it.
And for the first time all day, his anger disappeared completely.
Because the words at the top were not about money.
Not about ownership.
Not about divorce.
May you like
They were about his company.
And the person Ethan trusted most had signed them.
