Chapter 4: The Lawyer Who Knew Everything
The message on Ethan’s phone changed the entire atmosphere of the lobby.
For the first time since I walked through those glass doors, Ethan wasn’t trying to control the situation.
He wasn’t explaining.
He wasn’t accusing.
He wasn’t pretending.
He was simply standing there, staring at a name on his screen like it had appeared from another life.
“Your attorney is ready to explain what really happened three months ago.””
The words sat between us.
Heavy.
Dangerous.
Vanessa leaned toward him.
“Who sent that?””
Ethan locked his phone.
“No one.””
The answer came too quickly.
I almost smiled.
Ethan had always been terrible at hiding things when he was scared.
Vanessa noticed too.
“No one doesn’t send messages, Ethan.””
He looked at her.
“Not now.””
Her face tightened.
The woman who had walked into the resort beside him expecting a romantic escape suddenly looked like she was standing beside a stranger.
Adrian remained calm beside me.
He didn’t need to ask questions.
He already knew.
That bothered Ethan more than anything.
“You knew this was coming,” Ethan said.
Adrian adjusted his cuff.
“I knew someone would eventually explain the documents.””
“Someone?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Adrian looked toward the entrance.
Before he could answer, the glass doors opened.
A woman walked inside carrying a leather briefcase.
She was in her late forties, wearing a navy suit and carrying herself with the confidence of someone who had spent decades in courtrooms.
Ethan immediately recognized her.
His face went pale.
“Rachel.””
The woman stopped.
“Hello, Ethan.””
Vanessa looked between them.
“You know her?””
Rachel gave a polite nod.
“I represented Carter Holdings for seven years.””
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“Formerly.””
The word came out bitter.
Rachel didn’t react.
“I see you remember.””
I watched Ethan carefully.
There it was again.
That flash of panic.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
He knew this woman.
He knew exactly why she was here.
“Why are you here?”” he asked.
Rachel looked at me.
Then at Adrian.
Then back at Ethan.
“Because Mrs. Carter requested that I provide a complete explanation.””
Vanessa laughed softly.
“This is ridiculous.””
Everyone looked at her.
She stepped forward.
“You’re telling me Ethan signed over a billion-dollar resort and nobody noticed?””
Rachel opened her briefcase.
“The transfer was legally documented.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
Rachel looked directly at Vanessa.
“It answers the only question that matters.””
Her voice remained calm.
“Mr. Carter signed the agreement voluntarily.””
Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
Rachel opened a folder.
“Would you like me to show you the video recording?””
Silence.
Even Vanessa stopped moving.
“A video?”” Ethan whispered.
Rachel nodded.
“The signing meeting was recorded because the transaction involved multiple international assets.””
My heartbeat remained steady.
Because this was the moment Ethan had been running from.
Not the affair.
Not the embarrassment.
The truth.
He looked at me.
“You knew?””
I didn’t answer.
Rachel placed a tablet on the reception desk.
“The recording begins with Mr. Carter explaining why he wanted the transfer completed.””
Ethan stared at the tablet.
“I never said that.””
Rachel pressed play.
A familiar voice filled the lobby.
His voice.
“Halcyon Crown Resort has always been my biggest liability.””
Ethan froze.
The recording continued.
“I want to remove it from my personal portfolio before the market changes.””
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“That’s you.””
Nobody needed to tell her.
She knew.
Ethan’s own voice continued.
“I trust my wife to manage the transition.””
My chest tightened.
Even though I knew the words were coming, hearing them still hurt.
Because that version of Ethan existed.
The one who trusted me.
The one who believed in me.
The one who had disappeared somewhere along the way.
Rachel paused the video.
Ethan looked away.
“No.””
Rachel looked at him.
“Yes.””
“You manipulated me.””
The accusation was almost unbelievable.
Rachel slowly closed the tablet.
“Mr. Carter, you were not manipulated.””
She stepped closer.
“You were distracted.””
The silence afterward was brutal.
Because everyone knew what she meant.
Three months ago, Ethan was already building a secret life.
Already lying.
Already convinced he could separate his choices from their consequences.
He looked at me.
“You set this up.””
I finally spoke.
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“I prepared for what you were already doing.””
His expression cracked.
For a moment, I saw anger.
Then sadness.
Then something close to regret.
But regret always arrives late.
“I loved you,” he whispered.
I looked at him.
“I know.””
That surprised him.
Because he expected anger.
He expected revenge.
He expected me to deny everything we had been.
But I couldn’t.
The love was real.
The betrayal was real too.
Both things could exist.
Rachel gathered her papers.
“There’s one more thing.””
Ethan looked at her.
“What?””
She hesitated.
Then pulled out another document.
“This transfer was not only about ownership.””
She placed it on the counter.
“This agreement also contained a protection clause.””
Adrian glanced at me.
I stayed silent.
Ethan picked up the paper.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
“What is this?””
Rachel’s expression became serious.
“It explains what happens if you attempt to hide assets, deceive shareholders, or misuse company resources.””
Ethan’s fingers tightened around the paper.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Ethan?””
He didn’t answer.
Because the next line had caught his attention.
May you like
And whatever he read there was worse than losing the resort.
Much worse.
