Chapter 11: The Truth Behind Vanessa’s Name

Marcus stared at the journal.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The room felt frozen.

Finally, Vanessa whispered:

“That’s not what you think.””

Marcus slowly looked at her.

“You know what I think?””

His voice was quiet.

“I think every time I believe I’ve found the truth, another secret appears.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Marcus, please.””

He held up the journal.

“Your name is written here.””

She looked at the page.

Then closed her eyes.

“I know.””

Those two words changed everything.

Marcus looked stunned.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa sat down.

Her hands were shaking.

“Because I found this page two years ago.””

Marcus laughed softly.

“You found it.””

The bitterness in his voice hurt.

“You always find things.””

She looked at him.

“I was trying to understand what your father discovered.””

“Without telling me.””

“I was scared.””

Marcus turned away.

“You keep saying that.””

“I know.””

“Do you hear yourself?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you stop?””

She didn’t answer.

Because she knew.

She had no answer that could fix it.

Daniel picked up the journal.

“Marcus, look at the entire page.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

“Not just the name.””

He pointed.

“Read the words above it.””

Marcus looked down.

His eyes moved.

Then his expression changed.

The name Vanessa Carter wasn’t under a list of criminals.

It wasn’t under suspects.

It was under a heading.

*“People They May Use.””*

Marcus stared.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel sighed.

“It means your father believed Vanessa was being manipulated.””

Vanessa looked away.

Marcus looked at her.

“By who?””

She whispered:

“Your father never knew.””

The room went quiet.

“Then why is her name there?”” Marcus asked.

Daniel answered.

“Because someone was using Vanessa to get close to you.””

Marcus looked at his wife.

“You knew?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“You knew someone was using you?””

“No.””

“Then what did you know?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I knew someone wanted your father’s files.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“And you never told me?””

“I thought if I kept them hidden—”

“You thought.””

His voice cracked.

“You thought.””

Vanessa started crying.

“I was wrong.””

Nobody spoke.

Because for the first time, she admitted it.

Not an excuse.

Not a defense.

A mistake.

Then Noah’s voice came from the doorway.

“Mom?””

Everyone turned.

He stood there holding something.

I immediately walked toward him.

“Noah, why are you upstairs?””

He looked nervous.

“I found this downstairs.””

He held up a small envelope.

Marcus frowned.

“What is that?””

Noah looked at Vanessa.

“She dropped it.””

Vanessa froze.

“What?””

Noah handed it to Marcus.

“It was under the chair.””

Marcus opened it.

Inside was a single card.

No name.

No address.

Just a message.

His face changed as he read it.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

He handed it to Daniel.

Daniel read it.

Then his expression turned serious.

“What?””

Daniel looked at all of us.

“It’s a warning.””

Marcus stared.

“From who?””

Daniel looked down.

“It doesn’t say.””

“What does it say?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then read the words aloud.

“‘You were supposed to stay dead.’”

The room went silent.

Marcus looked toward Vanessa.

But she wasn’t looking at him.

She was looking at the window.

At the street outside.

Like she expected someone to be there.

Marcus noticed.

“Vanessa.””

She didn’t respond.

“Who are you afraid of?””

Slowly, she turned around.

And whispered:

“The person who made your father disappear.””

My heart stopped.

Because for twenty years, we believed that person was gone.

But Vanessa’s face told us the truth.

They weren’t gone.

They were watching.

And they were closer than any of us imagined.

Then Daniel’s phone rang again.

This time, he answered immediately.

His face changed after only a few seconds.

“What?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“What happened?””

Daniel lowered the phone.

“The bank approved the transfer.””

Marcus frowned.

“What transfer?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Your father’s money.””

The room became silent.

Marcus looked confused.

“But nobody can access that.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Someone did.””

“How?””

Daniel looked at the journal.

Then at Marcus.

“Because they used your identity.””

Marcus stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“No.””

May you like

He looked at him.

“That’s exactly what they wanted you to believe.””
