Chapter 4: The Man At The Door

The name on the folder stopped Marcus from breathing.

For a moment, nobody in the room moved.

Not me.

Not Noah.

Not even Vanessa.

The stranger standing outside the door held the folder with both hands, his expression serious but uncertain.

“Marcus Carter?””

My son stared at him.

The color drained from his face.

“No…”

The man looked confused.

“Sir?””

Marcus took one step backward.

“You can’t be here.””

Vanessa’s hand flew to her mouth.

That was when I understood something important.

She knew him.

Not just his name.

She knew him.

The stranger slowly lowered the folder.

“Marcus, I think we need to talk.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Then back at the man.

“Who is he?””

Nobody answered.

The silence was unbearable.

I moved closer to Marcus.

“Son.””

He didn’t look away from the stranger.

“His name is Daniel.””

Vanessa whispered it.

“Daniel.””

Marcus finally looked at her.

“You know him.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Yes.””

The word landed like another blow.

Marcus laughed quietly.

“You know the man who shows up at our house with paperwork about my death?””

“Marcus—”

“No.””

His voice sharpened.

“No, Vanessa. I’m done hearing my name followed by excuses.””

Daniel stepped inside slowly.

He didn’t look threatening.

That almost made it worse.

He looked like someone who had been carrying a burden for a long time.

“I didn’t come here to hurt you.””

Marcus pointed toward the folder.

“Then why did you bring that?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because I thought you already knew.””

“Knew what?””

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation made Vanessa panic.

“Daniel, don’t.””

Marcus turned.

“Don’t what?””

Vanessa stepped between them.

“Please.””

Her voice cracked.

“I can explain.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You’ve been saying that for an hour.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Vanessa didn’t want you to find out this way.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Find out what?””

Daniel looked at me.

Then at Noah.

His expression changed.

“You shouldn’t be hearing this.””

I immediately stepped forward.

“My grandson found the envelope. My son’s name is on the papers. We’re already hearing it.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

He seemed to accept that.

He placed the folder on the table.

“There are documents inside that explain why the petition was filed.””

Marcus looked at the folder but didn’t touch it.

“By who?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Nobody needed him to say the name.

Marcus already knew.

His voice became softer.

“Vanessa.””

She closed her eyes.

“I didn’t want this.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You filed it.””

“I had a reason.””

“Then tell me.””

She looked at him.

And for the first time, she seemed angry instead of afraid.

“You think I wanted to do this?””

Marcus stared.

“I don’t know what you wanted anymore.””

The words hurt.

I saw it.

Vanessa looked like she had been slapped.

But before she could answer, Daniel spoke.

“Marcus, there’s something else.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel opened the folder.

He removed another paper.

“This petition wasn’t the first step.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel placed the document down.

“It means someone started this process months ago.””

My stomach tightened.

Months?

Not yesterday?

Not a mistake?

A plan.

Marcus picked up the paper.

His eyes moved quickly.

Then stopped.

“What is this?””

Daniel looked at him.

“A request for financial authorization.””

Marcus looked confused.

“What financial authorization?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

That was the moment Vanessa whispered:

“Daniel.””

He looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

Marcus’s grip tightened around the paper.

“What financial authorization?””

Daniel finally said it.

“The kind someone needs when they are trying to manage the assets of a person who cannot legally act for themselves.””

The room went silent.

Noah looked up at me.

I felt my heart sink.

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

“You were trying to control my accounts?””

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

“No.””

“Then what was it?””

“I was trying to stop something.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Stop what?””

She looked at Daniel.

Then at the floor.

“I can’t tell you.””

Marcus looked almost broken.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because if I tell you, you’ll understand why I had to make everyone believe you were gone.””

Nobody spoke.

The sentence hung in the air.

Everyone believe you were gone.

Not dead.

Gone.

There was a difference.

Marcus slowly turned toward Daniel.

“What does she mean?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I think you need to see what’s inside this folder.””

Marcus opened it.

The first page was covered with legal information.

The second page had a date.

The third page had a photograph attached.

Marcus stopped.

His breathing changed.

I watched his eyes move across the page.

Then suddenly, he dropped the papers.

“No.””

I bent down to pick them up.

“Marcus?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“What did you see?””

He looked at Vanessa.

His voice barely came out.

“You knew.””

Vanessa started crying.

“Marcus…”

“You knew about this.””

He pointed at the paper on the floor.

“You knew someone was coming after me.””

Daniel looked away.

And that was when I saw something I would never forget.

Fear wasn’t just on Vanessa’s face anymore.

It was on Daniel’s too.

May you like

Because whatever was in that folder wasn’t just about a fake death.

It was about something that could destroy Marcus before anyone ever believed he was alive.
