Chapter 5: The Secret Vanessa Buried

Marcus refused to pick up the papers.

They stayed on the floor between us.

A few sheets of paper.

A single photograph.

And a secret that had turned our family room into a courtroom.

“Tell me the truth.””

Marcus’s voice was calm.

Too calm.

Vanessa sat on the sofa, crying silently.

Daniel stood near the door, watching like he knew this moment had been coming for a long time.

“Vanessa.””

She looked up.

“Tell me.””

She wiped her face.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then why does every answer sound like another lie?””

Vanessa looked away.

I could see the pain on her face.

But I also saw something else.

Regret.

“You wouldn’t understand.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Try me.””

She took a deep breath.

“Someone was looking for you.””

Marcus frowned.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

“Who, Vanessa?””

Daniel finally spoke.

“Marcus, there are things about your past—”

Marcus turned sharply.

“No.””

Daniel stopped.

“You don’t get to say that.””

The room became silent.

Marcus pointed toward the folder.

“You show up at my house with papers saying I’m dead. My wife hides documents under my sofa. And now you’re telling me there are things about my own past that I don’t know?””

He looked between them.

“Everybody seems to know something except me.””

Noah quietly moved closer to me.

I put my arm around him.

Vanessa noticed.

Her expression softened.

“I never wanted Noah involved.””

Marcus looked at her.

“But he was.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

That answer hurt more than an argument.

Because she wasn’t denying it.

She knew.

Marcus walked toward the window.

The sunlight hit his face.

For a second, he looked like a stranger.

“My whole life…”

He paused.

“My whole life, I thought my family was the one place I didn’t have to question.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel quietly said:

“Marcus, you need to understand something.””

My son looked at him.

“What?””

“The petition wasn’t meant to prove you were dead.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

Daniel took a breath.

“It was meant to protect your identity.””

Everyone froze.

Vanessa looked at him.

“Daniel.””

But he continued.

“Because someone was already trying to use your information.””

Marcus stared.

“My information?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your name. Your accounts. Your records.””

Marcus looked at the document again.

“Then why make me legally dead?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Because a dead person is harder to find.””

The room went completely silent.

I felt a chill.

Marcus stared.

“You’re saying Vanessa made the world think I was dead to hide me?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at her.

“From who?””

No answer.

He walked closer.

“From who?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“Then what were you protecting me from?””

She looked at him.

“Someone who knew things about you that even I didn’t know.””

Daniel opened the folder again.

“There’s more.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Of course there is.””

Daniel removed another paper.

“This is why I came today.””

He handed it over.

Marcus took it.

His eyes scanned the page.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He looked at Vanessa.

“Is this real?””

She looked terrified.

“What?””

He turned the page around.

There was a signature.

A familiar signature.

One that belonged to someone in the family.

Someone who had been sitting quietly through all of this.

Marcus’s voice became a whisper.

“Why is my mother’s name on this?””

My heart stopped.

I looked at the paper.

I looked at my son.

“I’ve never seen that before.””

Marcus stared at me.

For the first time that day, I saw doubt enter his eyes.

Not doubt about Vanessa.

Not doubt about Daniel.

Doubt about everyone.

“No,” I whispered.

But Marcus kept looking at the signature.

“It’s your handwriting.””

The room tilted.

I stepped back.

“No.””

Vanessa stood immediately.

“Evelyn, wait.””

I looked at her.

“What do you mean, wait?””

She looked at the paper.

Then at me.

And her expression told me something terrible.

She had known about this too.

“Vanessa.””

Her lips trembled.

“I was going to tell you.””

My voice became cold.

“Tell me what?””

Nobody answered.

Then Noah spoke.

A small voice.

A scared voice.

“Grandma…”

I looked down.

He was staring at the staircase.

“What is it?””

He pointed upward.

“There was another envelope.””

My blood ran cold.

“Where?””

He whispered:

“In Vanessa’s room.””

Vanessa immediately stood.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

Because that reaction told us the truth.

There was something else hidden in the house.

May you like

And this time, Vanessa wasn’t afraid of Marcus finding it.

She was afraid of all of us finding it.
