Chapter 9: The Person Behind The Plan

The signature at the bottom of the note made my hands shake.

Marcus noticed.

“Mom.””

I folded the paper slightly.

Not because I wanted to hide it.

Because I needed one more second to accept what I was seeing.

“Who signed it?”” he asked.

I looked at him.

My son.

The same eyes his father had.

The same stubbornness.

The same need for answers.

I whispered the name.

“Your father.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

I turned the paper toward him.

“He wrote the note.””

Daniel stepped closer.

Marcus took it.

His eyes moved quickly.

Then he stopped.

“What?””

I watched his face.

“What does it say?””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then Daniel.

Then me.

“It says someone close to me betrayed my father.””

Nobody moved.

“Who?”” I asked.

Marcus shook his head.

“He didn’t write the name.””

“Why?””

“Because he said the name would put us in danger.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“He was careful.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You knew him?””

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.””

“How?””

A long silence followed.

Then Daniel answered.

“I worked with him.””

Marcus stared.

“You were my father’s employee?””

Daniel nodded.

“Not exactly.””

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“She knows.””

Marcus turned.

“Vanessa?””

She closed her eyes.

“I found Daniel because of your father’s records.””

Marcus looked angry again.

“You found him?””

“Yes.””

“And you kept him from me.””

“I was trying to confirm the truth first.””

Marcus laughed.

“Everyone keeps trying to save me by lying to me.””

No one could argue.

Because everyone had.

Daniel walked toward the table.

“I need to tell you something.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Go ahead.””

Daniel placed another document down.

“This is the original reason I came here.””

Marcus picked it up.

His eyes moved across the page.

“What is this?””

“A transfer request.””

“For what?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Your father’s account.””

Marcus stared.

“It was signed today.””

The room went quiet.

“By who?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at the signature line.

Nobody breathed.

Then he said:

“Someone using Marcus Carter’s name.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“But I didn’t sign that.””

“I know.””

“Then someone forged my signature.””

Daniel nodded.

“And that person needed you legally unable to fight back.””

The meaning hit all of us.

The petition.

The fake death.

The hidden documents.

It wasn’t about making Marcus disappear.

It was about making sure nobody believed him when he returned.

Marcus slowly sat down.

“So Vanessa was right.””

I looked at him.

He looked exhausted.

“She wasn’t trying to destroy me.””

Vanessa started crying.

“No.””

“You were trying to protect me.””

“Yes.””

“But you still hid everything.””

She lowered her head.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked away.

The pain between them was still there.

Trust didn’t return just because the truth finally arrived.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

Everyone froze.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“Who is it?”” Marcus asked.

Daniel didn’t answer.

He stared at the name.

“Daniel.””

He looked up.

“It’s someone who shouldn’t know I’m here.””

Marcus stood.

“Answer it.””

Daniel hesitated.

Then picked up.

“Hello?””

Nobody could hear the voice on the other end.

But we could see Daniel’s face.

The color disappeared.

“What did they say?”” Vanessa whispered.

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

“They know.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Know what?””

Daniel looked directly at him.

“They know you found the documents.””

The room became silent.

Marcus looked toward the front door.

“Who knows?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Then the phone buzzed again.

A new message appeared.

Daniel looked at it.

And his hands started trembling.

Marcus grabbed the phone.

The message was only one sentence.

But it changed everything.

*“Tell Evelyn Carter we know she kept the original evidence.””*

I felt my heart stop.

Marcus slowly looked at me.

“Original evidence?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because for twenty years, I had kept one thing hidden.

Something I thought would protect my family.

Something my husband told me never to reveal.

Something that could finally prove the truth.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Mom…”

His voice was different now.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“What evidence are they talking about?””

I looked toward the locked drawer in my bedroom.

The drawer I had never opened.

The drawer nobody knew existed.

And I realized the person hunting Marcus wasn’t afraid of the documents.

They were afraid of what I still had.

A piece of the past that could destroy them.

May you like

And somehow…

They knew exactly where it was.
