Chapter 8: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Gone

Nobody spoke after we read the final sentence.

The letter sat between us.

A piece of paper that had survived two decades.

A piece of paper that had been waiting for the exact moment it could destroy every lie we had built our lives around.

Marcus walked away from us.

Slowly.

He stopped near the window.

“Twenty years.””

His voice was quiet.

“Twenty years, and everyone decided what I was allowed to know.””

I stood.

“Marcus.””

He turned around.

“Did you know?””

The question was simple.

But I knew what he meant.

“Did you know my father was investigating something?””

I looked down.

“Yes.””

His face tightened.

“Did you know he was afraid?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know he left that letter?””

I hesitated.

That was enough.

Marcus looked away.

“You knew.””

“I found it after he disappeared.””

“Disappeared?””

I closed my eyes.

The word escaped before I could stop it.

Marcus noticed.

“You said died before.””

The room became painfully quiet.

I had no choice anymore.

“I lied.””

The words felt heavier than anything I had ever said.

Marcus stared at me.

“Why?””

“Because I thought it was the only way to keep you alive.””

Vanessa started crying softly.

Marcus looked at her.

“You knew too.””

She nodded.

“I found out later.””

“How much later?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

“Two years ago.””

Marcus froze.

“Two years?””

She looked at him.

“I found documents connected to your father.””

He shook his head.

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I was scared.””

He looked around the room.

Everyone had the same answer.

Fear.

But fear had become the reason everyone used to justify keeping him in the dark.

Daniel finally spoke.

“There’s something else you need to know.””

Marcus looked exhausted.

“What now?””

Daniel reached into the folder.

He pulled out a document.

“This is the reason Vanessa filed the petition.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Explain.””

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“I discovered someone was accessing your personal records.””

Marcus frowned.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then how did you know?””

She looked at the document.

“Because they used information only someone close to you would know.””

I felt a chill.

“What information?””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“Your father’s old accounts.””

Marcus went still.

“My father’s accounts were closed.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“They weren’t.””

Daniel nodded.

“There was money hidden.””

Marcus stared.

“What money?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa said:

“Money your father left for you.””

Marcus looked confused.

“For me?””

“Yes.””

“And someone is trying to get it?””

Daniel nodded.

“That’s why your identity became dangerous.””

Marcus looked at the petition.

“So you made me legally dead.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The admission hurt.

Even though it was finally honest.

Marcus sat down.

“You should have told me.””

“I know.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You should have trusted me.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I was afraid you would do exactly what you’re doing now.””

“What?””

“Try to fight.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Because that’s who I am.””

Nobody argued.

Because it was true.

Then Noah suddenly spoke.

“Grandma?””

I turned.

“What is it?””

He pointed toward the letter.

“There’s something behind it.””

Everyone looked.

I picked up the paper.

The back side had a faint mark.

Something hidden beneath the fold.

Marcus leaned closer.

“What is that?””

I carefully opened the fold.

A small handwritten note was hidden there.

Only one sentence.

My heart stopped.

Marcus saw my face.

“What does it say?””

I looked at the words.

And I realized my husband hadn’t only left a warning.

He had left instructions.

Instructions for the one person he trusted most.

Me.

The note said:

*“Evelyn, if Marcus is reading this, it means Vanessa failed to keep him hidden.””*

Vanessa gasped.

Marcus looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because the next line was worse.

It wasn’t a warning.

May you like

It was a confession.

And it was signed by someone who had been inside our family all along.
