Chapter 9: The Truth That Was Buried Alive

Maya didn’t look away from Adrian.

She couldn’t.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she was trying to understand.

The man in the photograph.

The man standing beside the wrecked car.

The man who had held her hand when she was hurt.

The man who told her he was protecting her.

Adrian Vale.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The rain filled the silence.

Cole slowly turned toward Adrian.

“Tell me I’m wrong.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

That was the answer.

Cole’s jaw tightened.

“You were there.””

Adrian looked at Maya.

“Yes.””

Maya’s hands moved.

Slowly.

Carefully.

*Why?*

Adrian looked broken.

Not like a criminal caught.

Like someone who had carried a weight for too long.

“Because I knew Elena.””

Maya stared.

Elena stepped forward.

“I worked with Adrian.””

Cole looked at her.

“Doing what?””

Elena looked down.

“Trying to expose them.””

Grant laughed from near the alley entrance.

Everyone turned.

Nobody had noticed he followed them.

His clothes were soaked.

His face was bruised.

But he was still standing.

“You two always tell the story like you’re heroes.””

Cole immediately stepped in front of Maya.

Grant continued:

“You weren’t saving anyone.””

He pointed at Adrian.

“You were cleaning up your own mistake.””

Maya looked between them.

Her mind was overwhelmed.

Too many truths.

Too many lies.

She signed toward Elena.

*What happened that night?*

Elena looked at her.

And tears appeared in her eyes.

“Adrian was driving.””

Maya froze.

Cole looked at Adrian.

“You caused the accident?””

Adrian didn’t deny it.

“I caused the crash.””

The words were quiet.

But they changed everything.

Maya stepped backward.

The world felt unstable.

The man she trusted.

The man who helped her.

The man who made her feel safe.

Had been behind the wheel.

Adrian continued.

“But I didn’t know who was in the car.””

Maya stared.

Elena nodded.

“It wasn’t intentional.””

Grant laughed.

“Does that make it better?””

Nobody answered.

Because it didn’t.

An accident could be unplanned.

But the choices afterward mattered.

And everyone there had made choices.

Adrian looked at Maya.

“After the crash, I saw Elena alive.””

Elena looked away.

“I was badly injured.””

Adrian continued.

“I called for help.””

Grant interrupted.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

Grant smiled bitterly.

“You called someone else first.””

Adrian’s face changed.

Maya noticed.

The hesitation.

The guilt.

Grant stepped closer.

“You didn’t want the truth coming out.””

Adrian looked at him.

“I was trying to protect her.””

“You were trying to protect yourself.””

The accusation hung there.

Maya watched them.

She finally understood.

The truth wasn’t simple.

There wasn’t one monster.

There were people who made terrible choices.

People who lied because they were afraid.

People who hurt others while convincing themselves they were helping.

Elena looked at Maya.

“When Adrian found out who was behind the accident, he knew you were in danger.””

Maya’s hands moved.

*So you changed my memory.*

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.””

Cole looked at him.

“You don’t get to call that protection.””

Adrian accepted the anger.

“I know.””

Maya stared.

*You made me forget my own life.*

Adrian whispered:

“I thought if you remembered, they would come after you.””

She shook her head.

*They came anyway.*

Adrian had no answer.

Because she was right.

The thing he feared had happened.

Only now Maya had lost years of truth because of his decision.

A siren sounded in the distance.

Closer this time.

Cole looked toward the road.

“We don’t have much time.””

Elena nodded.

“She knows.””

Everyone looked at her.

Cole frowned.

“Who?””

Elena’s expression became serious.

“The person who has controlled this entire situation.””

Maya looked at the photograph again.

The picture had one more detail.

Something she hadn’t noticed.

A car in the background.

A license plate.

A company logo.

She recognized it.

Her eyes widened.

Cole saw.

“What?””

Maya pointed at the logo.

Then at Grant.

Then at Adrian.

Her hands moved quickly.

*The company.*

Elena nodded.

“Yes.””

Cole looked confused.

“Explain.””

Elena took a breath.

“The organization wasn’t just a criminal group.””

She looked at Adrian.

“It was a medical research company.””

Maya stared.

The pieces connected.

The memory.

The treatment.

The records.

The experiments.

Adrian had worked there.

Grant had worked there.

Evan had worked there.

Even Derek had been pulled into their world.

Cole looked at Adrian.

“You were part of it.””

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.””

Maya’s expression changed.

Again.

Another piece of betrayal.

Adrian continued quickly:

“But I left.””

Grant smiled.

“After you realized what they were doing.””

Adrian looked away.

“Yes.””

“What were they doing?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Elena spoke.

“They were studying memory.””

Maya felt cold.

“Why?””

Elena looked at her.

“Because memories are evidence.””

Cole frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Elena explained:

“They discovered they could manipulate how people remembered traumatic events.””

Maya touched her head.

The headaches.

The missing moments.

The confusion.

It wasn’t random.

Elena continued:

“They didn’t just want to hide crimes.””

She looked at Maya.

“They wanted to create witnesses who couldn’t testify.””

The alley became silent.

Maya understood.

She wasn’t just a witness.

She was proof that their methods worked.

A living example.

Grant stepped forward.

“You still don’t get it.””

Cole looked at him.

“Get what?””

Grant pointed at Maya.

“She remembers because the procedure failed.””

Maya stared.

Grant smiled.

“And now everyone knows.””

Adrian suddenly moved.

He grabbed Grant’s arm.

“You’re not taking her.””

Grant shoved him away.

“You already took enough from her.””

The two men struggled.

Cole stepped in.

But Elena stopped him.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked.

Elena was staring at Adrian.

Not Grant.

Adrian.

Her face was full of realization.

“What?””

Adrian looked at her.

Elena whispered:

“You still have it.””

Adrian froze.

Maya noticed.

“What?””

Elena looked at Maya.

“The original file.””

Adrian said nothing.

Cole looked between them.

“What file?””

Elena answered:

“The one that proves everything.””

Grant’s expression changed.

For the first time, real fear appeared.

“No.””

Adrian looked at Maya.

“I kept it because I knew one day you might need the truth.””

Maya stared.

*Where is it?*

Adrian reached into his coat.

Pulled out a small drive.

But before he could hand it to her—

A gunshot echoed.

Everyone froze.

The drive fell from Adrian’s hand.

He stumbled.

Maya gasped.

Cole caught him before he hit the ground.

The shooter stood at the end of the alley.

Not Grant.

Not Evan.

Not Derek.

A woman.

Wearing a dark coat.

Calm.

Controlled.

Someone who looked like she had been expecting this moment.

Elena’s face turned pale.

“No.””

Maya looked at her.

“Who?””

Elena whispered:

“The person who started everything.””

The woman walked closer.

The police sirens grew louder.

She looked at Maya.

Then at Adrian.

Then at the fallen drive.

And smiled.

“Maya.””

Her voice was gentle.

Almost kind.

“You’ve caused a lot of trouble for someone who was supposed to forget.””

Maya stared.

She knew that voice.

Not because she had heard it.

Because she had seen it.

In her memories.

In the hospital.

After the accident.

The woman who sat beside her bed.

The woman who told her everything would be okay.

The woman who had helped Adrian erase the truth.

Elena whispered her name.

“Dr. Claire Whitmore.””

The woman smiled.

And said:

“I’m sorry, Maya.””

May you like

She looked at the drive.

“But I can’t let you remember the rest.””
