Chapter 3: The Lie Hidden In Plain Sight

The room changed the moment Maya signed his name.

Not because everyone understood the movement of her hands.

Most of them didn’t.

But everyone understood the way Cole looked at Derek.

Like the floor beneath him had cracked open.

Derek stood near the front counter, frozen.

The man who had spent the last hour acting annoyed, impatient, and dismissive suddenly looked like someone caught standing beside a fire he started.

“No,” Derek whispered.

Maya stared at him.

Her hands moved again.

Fast.

Angry.

*You were there.*

Derek shook his head.

“I don’t know what you think you saw.””

Cole stepped forward.

“Don’t lie.””

Derek looked at him.

“I’m not lying.””

Cole pointed toward the man who had dropped from the ceiling.

The employee shirt.

The familiar face.

The person who had been hiding above them while everyone searched for an attacker outside.

“Then explain him.””

Nobody answered.

Because there was no easy explanation.

The man on the floor slowly stood.

He was younger than Derek.

Maybe mid-thirties.

Thin.

Sharp eyes.

The kind of person who looked harmless until you noticed he never stopped watching.

His name tag was still attached to his shirt.

*Evan.*

He brushed dust from his shoulder.

Then smiled.

“You people are making this more difficult than it needs to be.””

The bikers moved immediately.

Tom and Ray stepped forward.

Cole raised one hand.

Stop.

He didn’t want anyone rushing.

Not yet.

Evan noticed.

“You’re Cole Mercer, right?””

Cole’s eyes narrowed.

“You know me.””

“I know everyone around here.””

That answer bothered Maya.

Because she understood what it meant.

The man wasn’t just dangerous.

He was prepared.

Cole looked at Derek.

“You hired him?””

Derek didn’t respond.

That was enough.

The silence became an answer.

The waitress, Lily, backed away from the counter.

“Derek?””

Her voice cracked.

“You knew?””

Derek looked at her.

“It’s not what you think.””

Lily laughed once.

A small, painful sound.

“Every time someone says that, it’s exactly what I think.””

Maya watched Derek carefully.

She had learned not to trust words.

Words were easy.

Faces were harder to fake.

Derek looked scared.

But she couldn’t tell if he was scared of Evan…

Or scared of being exposed.

Cole noticed the same thing.

He walked closer.

“Why was he hiding in your ceiling?””

Derek rubbed his face.

“I didn’t tell him to do that.””

Evan smiled.

“No, you didn’t.””

Everyone looked at him.

Evan continued.

“Derek just wanted information.””

Cole’s expression darkened.

“What information?””

Evan looked directly at Maya.

Her stomach tightened.

“You.””

The diner became silent again.

Maya stepped back.

Cole immediately moved in front of her.

“No.””

Evan tilted his head.

“You don’t understand.””

Cole’s voice became colder.

“I understand enough.””

Evan smiled.

“That’s the problem with people like you. You think protecting someone means you know the whole story.””

Maya stared at him.

She hated that sentence.

Because there was truth hidden inside it.

Cole noticed her expression.

He turned slightly.

*Do you know him?*

Maya shook her head.

Then she stopped.

Her eyes moved to Evan’s face.

She looked closer.

Something bothered her.

A memory.

A detail she had ignored.

She lifted her hands.

*I saw him before.*

Cole looked back.

“Where?””

Maya pointed toward the imaginary road outside.

*At the warehouse.*

Everyone reacted.

Derek looked confused.

Evan stopped smiling.

Only for a second.

But Maya saw it.

She saw the tiny change.

The moment she touched something real.

Cole saw it too.

“You were there.””

Evan didn’t answer.

Cole took another step.

“You were at the warehouse.””

Evan’s expression hardened.

“And you were supposed to leave that night without looking.””

Maya felt a chill run through her.

Because that confirmed it.

He knew.

He knew she had seen him.

The front windows shook again.

Everyone turned.

The man outside was still there.

Watching.

Waiting.

Evan glanced toward the door.

Then back at Maya.

“You don’t understand what you walked into.””

Cole looked between them.

“Who is outside?””

Evan laughed softly.

“You think he’s the danger?””

The words landed heavily.

Nobody moved.

Maya’s eyes widened.

Cole frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Evan looked around the diner.

At the frightened customers.

At Derek.

At the locked doors.

Then back at Maya.

“The man outside is here because of what she saw.””

He paused.

“But he isn’t the only one.””

The lights flickered.

Everyone looked upward.

The electricity struggled.

Once.

Twice.

Then returned.

But something had changed.

The emergency exit light near the kitchen was now glowing red.

Open.

Cole noticed immediately.

“That door wasn’t open before.””

Everyone looked.

The emergency exit stood slightly ajar.

Cold rain blew through the crack.

Derek whispered:

“How…”

Nobody answered.

Because they all knew.

Someone else had entered.

Or someone else was already inside.

Cole looked at his friends.

“Check every corner.””

The bikers moved.

This time, even Derek didn’t argue.

Maya stayed beside Cole.

Her eyes scanned the room.

Then she saw something.

A reflection.

In the glass of the dessert cabinet.

A person standing behind her.

She turned quickly.

Nobody.

Just shadows.

She looked again.

Nothing.

Cole noticed.

“What?””

Maya pointed.

*There.*

Cole looked.

His hand tightened.

“What did you see?””

Maya signed slowly.

*Someone watching.*

Cole looked around.

“Evan?””

She shook her head.

*No.*

Her fingers moved.

*Someone else.*

Before Cole could respond, a phone rang.

Everyone froze.

The sound came from the counter.

Not a customer’s phone.

Not Cole’s.

Derek’s.

The manager stared at it.

Nobody touched it.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, Cole looked at him.

“Answer it.””

Derek swallowed.

“No.””

Cole’s eyes narrowed.

“Answer it.””

Derek slowly picked it up.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then Derek’s face changed.

The color disappeared.

“Wait…”

Everyone watched him.

“What do you mean?””

His hand started shaking.

“No, I didn’t know she would—”

He stopped.

Too late.

Everyone had heard enough.

Cole stepped closer.

“Who is it?””

Derek didn’t answer.

The person on the phone said something.

Something that made Derek close his eyes.

Then he whispered:

“She’s here.””

Maya felt the air leave her lungs.

Derek looked at her.

Not with anger.

With fear.

The voice on the phone spoke again.

Derek lowered it slowly.

Cole stared.

“Who was that?””

Derek looked at Maya.

Then at the locked doors.

Then at Evan.

And for the first time all night, Derek told the truth.

“The person who paid me to watch her.””

Maya froze.

Cole’s jaw tightened.

“Who?””

Derek’s lips trembled.

“I don’t know his real name.””

The front door suddenly shook.

Hard.

The man outside slammed against it.

Everyone jumped.

Derek continued:

“But he told me one thing.””

Cole stared at him.

“What?””

Derek looked directly at Maya.

“He said if she ever made it inside this diner…”

A loud crack echoed through the room.

The front door lock began to bend.

Derek whispered:

“…we were never supposed to let her leave.””

The lights went out again.

And in the darkness, Maya felt someone grab her wrist.

Not Cole.

Someone else.

A hand she didn’t recognize.

May you like

Then a voice whispered close to her ear.

“You should have stayed silent.””
