Chapter 4: The Voice In The Darkness

Maya didn’t scream.

She couldn’t.

But her body reacted before her mind did.

Every muscle tightened.

Every instinct screamed one word.

*Run.*

The hand around her wrist was firm.

Cold.

Not Cole’s.

She knew that immediately.

Cole’s hands were rough from years of working with machines and motorcycles, but they were steady.

This hand was different.

It was nervous.

Desperate.

Maya twisted hard.

The stranger holding her lost his grip for half a second.

That was enough.

She pulled away and stumbled backward.

A shape moved in the darkness.

Someone crashed into a table.

A glass shattered.

People shouted.

The diner became chaos.

But Maya saw nothing clearly.

The lights were gone.

The rain outside had turned the windows into black mirrors.

She reached for Cole.

Her hand found his jacket.

He grabbed her shoulder instantly.

“You okay?””

She nodded quickly.

Then she signed:

*Someone grabbed me.*

Cole’s face changed.

The calm disappeared.

“Where?””

She pointed.

But the darkness swallowed everything.

Cole turned toward the room.

“Everyone stay together!””

His voice cut through the panic.

The bikers moved toward the customers.

Derek stood near the counter, breathing heavily.

Evan was nowhere in sight.

That was the first thing Maya noticed.

The second thing was worse.

The back door was open.

Again.

Cold air rushed inside.

Cole noticed too.

He looked at the door.

Then at Maya.

*Did you see who grabbed you?*

She shook her head.

Then she stopped.

A memory flashed.

The hand.

The sleeve.

A small detail.

She lifted her hands.

*Gray jacket.*

Cole looked around.

Nobody in the diner wore gray.

Except—

Derek.

His uniform jacket was gray.

Cole slowly turned.

Derek noticed.

“No.””

The manager stepped back.

“No, don’t look at me like that.””

Cole didn’t move.

“Where were you when the lights went out?””

Derek’s breathing became uneven.

“I was right here.””

Lily pointed at him.

“I heard someone move behind the counter.””

Derek looked at her.

“You think it was me?””

Lily didn’t answer.

She didn’t have to.

Everyone was thinking it.

Derek shook his head.

“You don’t know what’s happening.””

Cole stared.

“Then explain.””

Derek opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because explanations were running out.

Suddenly, a noise came from the kitchen.

A metal shelf falling.

Everyone turned.

Cole raised his hand.

Nobody moved.

Then he walked toward the kitchen.

Maya followed.

He looked back.

“No.””

She shook her head.

*I’m coming.*

Cole frowned.

“This isn’t safe.””

Maya signed:

*Neither is leaving me alone.*

For a second, Cole said nothing.

Then he nodded.

Because she was right.

They moved together.

The kitchen looked different in the darkness.

The familiar place where employees prepared food now felt like a maze.

The refrigerator hummed.

The rain tapped against the small windows.

Cole held a flashlight from the emergency kit.

The beam moved slowly.

Empty counter.

Empty shelves.

Open storage room.

Nothing.

Then Maya grabbed his arm.

She pointed.

The floor.

A trail.

Wet footprints.

Leading from the back door.

Into the kitchen.

Cole crouched.

The prints were fresh.

Someone had entered.

But where did they go?

Maya looked around.

Her eyes stopped at the supply closet.

The door was slightly open.

Cole saw it.

He stepped forward.

Then stopped.

He noticed something.

A thin wire.

Across the doorway.

A trap.

Maya’s eyes widened.

Cole backed away.

“Good catch.””

He looked at her.

Again, she had seen something before anyone else.

Again, she had saved them.

Cole carefully moved around the wire.

He opened the closet door with a long kitchen spoon.

Nothing happened.

Inside was darkness.

Boxes.

Cleaning supplies.

A broken mop.

Then the flashlight beam landed on something.

A phone.

Sitting on the floor.

Cole picked it up.

The screen was already open.

A video was playing.

Maya watched.

Her blood ran cold.

The video showed the diner.

From above.

From the security camera.

It showed everything.

Maya entering.

Derek arguing with her.

Cole arriving.

Everyone’s movements.

Someone had been watching the entire time.

Cole looked at the screen.

“This was recorded tonight.””

Maya nodded.

Then she pointed.

The video.

A few minutes earlier.

Before the lights went out.

Cole replayed it.

They watched silently.

On the screen, the camera showed Maya standing near the front door.

Then the lights flickered.

Everyone panicked.

The camera angle shifted.

And a person moved behind Maya.

The same person who grabbed her.

Cole paused the video.

Zoomed in.

The image was blurry.

But enough.

Maya leaned closer.

She recognized the jacket.

The posture.

The way the person stood.

Her hands rose slowly.

“No…”

Cole looked at her.

“What?””

She pointed at the screen.

Then at the kitchen.

Then toward the diner.

Her fingers trembled.

*It wasn’t Derek.*

Cole stared.

“Who was it?””

Maya looked terrified.

She signed:

*Evan.*

The name hung between them.

Cole’s expression hardened.

“He was in the dark.””

Maya nodded.

“But where did he go?””

A sound answered him.

Footsteps.

Behind them.

Slow.

Careful.

Cole turned.

The flashlight moved.

The beam landed on the doorway.

Nothing.

Then a voice came from the dining area.

“You two are asking the wrong questions.””

Evan stepped into view.

No panic.

No fear.

He looked completely calm.

Like he had been waiting.

Cole immediately moved in front of Maya.

“You grabbed her.””

Evan smiled.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised them.

Maya stared.

Why admit it?

Evan walked closer.

“She was about to do something stupid.””

Cole’s voice was low.

“You attacked her.””

“No.””

Evan shook his head.

“I stopped her.””

Maya’s hands moved angrily.

*Stopped me from what?*

Evan looked at her.

And for the first time, his expression changed.

Not anger.

Not cruelty.

Something worse.

Pity.

“You really don’t remember, do you?””

Maya froze.

Cole looked between them.

“What are you talking about?””

Evan stepped closer.

“Ask her.””

Cole looked at Maya.

She looked confused.

Afraid.

Evan continued.

“The warehouse wasn’t the first time she saw me.””

Maya shook her head.

No.

She knew that wasn’t true.

She would remember.

Wouldn’t she?

Evan’s eyes stayed on her.

“You saw me six months ago.””

Maya’s breathing slowed.

A strange feeling entered her chest.

A memory trying to return.

A parking lot.

A hospital.

A woman crying.

A promise.

She covered her mouth.

Cole noticed.

“Maya?””

She looked at him.

Her hands moved slowly.

*I… don’t know.*

Evan smiled sadly.

“That’s why you’re dangerous.””

Cole stepped forward.

“What happened six months ago?””

Before Evan could answer—

A loud crash exploded from the front of the diner.

The front door finally broke.

Everyone screamed.

The man from the blue truck stepped inside.

Rain poured from his coat.

A knife reflected under the emergency lights.

He looked around.

His eyes found Maya.

Then he smiled.

“There you are.””

Cole moved.

Fast.

He grabbed the nearest chair and stepped between them.

The man laughed.

“You have no idea what you’re protecting.””

Cole stared.

“Try me.””

The stranger tilted his head.

Then he said something that made Maya freeze.

Something that made Evan look away.

Something that changed everything.

“She’s not the witness.””

The man smiled.

“She’s the reason it happened.””

Maya’s hands stopped.

Cole looked at her.

The entire diner waited.

Because everyone had the same question.

May you like

What did Maya know?

And why couldn’t she remember?
