Chapter 2: The Shadow Behind The Glass

Maya’s fingers stopped moving.

For a moment, she forgot how to breathe.

The message on the phone screen outside the back window glowed like a warning carved into the darkness.

*I FOUND HER.*

The stranger standing in the rain didn’t move.

He simply held the phone up, letting everyone inside see the words.

Then he smiled.

Maya recognized that smile.

Not because she had seen it before.

Because she had felt it.

The same cold certainty.

The same confidence of someone who believed he had already won.

Cole’s grip tightened around the metal pan in his hand.

His eyes moved from the man outside to Maya.

He didn’t need sound to understand fear.

He saw it in her face.

He stepped between her and the window.

Maya immediately grabbed his arm.

“No,” she signed.

Cole looked down.

*What?*

Her hands moved quickly.

*Don’t let him see me.*

Cole’s expression hardened.

The meaning behind those words was worse than the threat itself.

This wasn’t a random person.

This man was looking for her.

Cole looked toward the window again.

The stranger slowly lowered the phone.

Then he lifted one finger.

Pointing at Maya.

The gesture was small.

But everyone understood.

He knew exactly who she was.

The waitress, Lily, whispered:

“Who is that?””

Maya looked at her.

Then at the others.

Her hands shook.

She didn’t know how to explain everything fast enough.

Cole did.

“He followed her here.””

Derek, the manager, stared.

“Followed her?””

Cole nodded.

“She saw him outside before she came in.””

Derek looked uncomfortable.

The confidence he had shown earlier was disappearing.

“But why?””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Then the back door handle moved.

Everyone froze.

The metal knob slowly turned.

Once.

Twice.

The old man near the counter stumbled backward.

“He’s trying to get in.””

Cole looked around the room.

“Everyone move away from the kitchen.””

This time, nobody questioned him.

Even Derek moved.

That was the part Maya noticed most.

The man who refused to listen now followed every instruction.

Fear had a way of making people hear things they ignored before.

Cole motioned toward his friends.

“Tom, check the side exit.””

A large biker nodded.

“Got it.””

“Ray, stay with the customers.””

The second biker moved in front of the families.

Cole looked at Maya.

Then he signed:

*Stay close to me.*

Maya hesitated.

She hated feeling helpless.

She had spent most of her life proving she didn’t need people to speak for her.

But tonight was different.

Tonight, someone had brought danger directly to her.

She nodded.

The back door suddenly slammed.

Everyone jumped.

But it didn’t open.

Instead, something slid underneath.

A small piece of paper.

It moved across the kitchen floor.

Slowly.

Like someone wanted them to see it.

Nobody moved.

Cole stared at it.

Maya stared too.

Finally, Derek whispered:

“What is that?””

Cole didn’t answer.

He walked toward the paper.

Maya grabbed his sleeve.

Her eyes widened.

She shook her head.

Cole looked at her hand.

Then understood.

She was warning him.

Don’t touch it.

He stopped.

“Good catch.””

He used a broom handle to pull the paper closer.

The note flipped over.

Three words were written in black ink.

*SHE KNOWS WHY.*

The room went silent.

Everyone looked at Maya.

Her face went pale.

Because she did know why.

Cole noticed.

His voice softened.

“Maya.””

She looked at him.

He signed slowly.

*What does he mean?*

Her eyes moved toward the note.

Then toward the rain-covered window.

She looked like someone deciding whether opening a door would let danger out.

Finally, she raised her hands.

*Yesterday.*

Cole waited.

*I saw something.*

She swallowed.

Her fingers trembled.

*Something I wasn’t supposed to see.*

The diner stayed quiet as Maya explained.

The previous night, she had been driving home after her late shift at a grocery store.

Near an abandoned warehouse outside town, she saw a man dragging a large bag from the back of a truck.

At first, she thought it was trash.

Then the bag moved.

She stopped.

She watched.

The man noticed her.

She drove away.

But before she left, she saw his face.

And he saw hers.

Cole’s jaw tightened.

“What was in the bag?””

Maya looked down.

Her hands slowed.

*I don’t know.*

Then she looked back up.

*But I know someone was alive.*

The words changed the room.

Derek stepped away.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

He rubbed his forehead.

“No, this is insane.””

Cole looked at him.

“You think she made that up?””

Derek shook his head.

“I think we’re jumping to conclusions.””

Cole stared at him.

“Then explain why a man is outside trying to get inside.””

Derek had no answer.

Nobody did.

A sudden crash came from the front of the diner.

Everyone turned.

The stranger was no longer at the back window.

He had moved.

The front glass shook.

The man was standing outside.

Right in front of the locked door.

Close enough that they could see his face clearly.

Maya immediately stepped backward.

Cole saw her reaction.

“What?””

She signed one word.

*Him.*

Cole looked at the man.

The stranger smiled.

Then he knocked on the glass.

Three slow taps.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

The sound made everyone uncomfortable.

Not because it was loud.

Because it was calm.

Like the man outside knew nobody inside could stop him.

The stranger raised his phone again.

A new message appeared.

*OPEN THE DOOR.*

Derek whispered:

“He can’t get in.””

Cole didn’t respond.

Because he was looking at the man’s other hand.

The hand hidden behind his back.

Maya saw it too.

Her eyes widened.

She grabbed Cole’s jacket.

She signed urgently.

*Knife.*

Cole nodded.

“I know.””

Derek stared.

“How?””

Cole looked at Maya.

“Because she told us.””

For the first time, Derek looked ashamed.

He looked at the young woman he had dismissed.

The woman he had treated like a problem.

Now she was the reason they knew what was happening.

The front door rattled.

Harder this time.

The lock held.

But everyone knew that wouldn’t last forever.

Cole scanned the diner.

One entrance.

One kitchen door.

One emergency exit.

Too many risks.

Then his eyes stopped on the security camera above the counter.

The small red light was blinking.

Cole frowned.

He walked closer.

“What?””

Derek looked confused.

Cole pointed.

“The camera.””

Derek stared at it.

“It’s been broken for months.””

Cole looked back toward the window.

Then at Maya.

A terrible thought formed.

“If it’s broken…”

He didn’t finish.

He didn’t need to.

Maya understood first.

Her face drained of color.

The man outside wasn’t just following her.

He wasn’t just searching.

He had been watching.

Derek stepped closer.

“What are you saying?””

Cole looked at the camera.

“Someone fixed it.””

Nobody spoke.

Because the implication was worse than the attack outside.

Someone had access to the diner.

Someone knew the layout.

Someone knew where the blind spots were.

Then Maya suddenly grabbed Cole’s arm.

Her eyes locked onto the ceiling.

She pointed upward.

Everyone followed her gaze.

A tiny movement.

Above the kitchen entrance.

A shadow.

Someone was already inside.

Cole slowly raised the metal pan.

His voice dropped.

“Everybody stay back.””

The hidden figure moved.

A ceiling panel shifted.

Dust fell.

And then a voice came from above them.

A voice they didn’t expect.

A voice Maya recognized.

Because it belonged to someone who had been standing beside them the entire time.

“You should have just handed her over.””

Maya’s blood turned cold.

Cole looked around the diner.

Trying to find the source.

Then the ceiling panel opened.

And the person hiding above them dropped down.

Right into the center of the room.

Derek screamed.

Because the man wasn’t a stranger.

He was wearing a Miller’s Roadside Diner employee shirt.

And Maya knew him.

She had seen him every night she worked nearby.

The man smiled.

“Hello, Maya.””

Her hands slowly rose.

But this time, she didn’t sign a warning.

She signed a name.

A name that made Cole’s expression change.

May you like

Because it was the last name anyone expected.

*“Derek.””*
