Chapter 6: The Man Who Saved Her Life

The name left Maya’s hands like a confession.

*Dr. Adrian Vale.*

Cole watched her face carefully.

He had learned something important about Maya in the last few hours.

She didn’t scare easily.

Not because she was fearless.

Because she had spent her entire life fighting through things most people never noticed.

People talking over her.

People ignoring her.

People assuming silence meant weakness.

But now she was afraid.

Not of the man outside.

Of the memory.

Cole looked through the broken front door.

The man standing in the rain didn’t look dangerous.

That was the first thing that bothered him.

Danger rarely announced itself.

Adrian Vale looked like the kind of person people trusted.

Clean coat.

Calm expression.

Silver hair.

A face built for hospital hallways and television interviews.

A man who could walk into a room and make people believe everything was under control.

But Maya was shaking.

And Cole trusted her reaction more than appearances.

“Who is he?”” Cole asked.

Maya stared through the glass.

Her hands moved slowly.

*He saved me.*

Cole frowned.

The answer was not what he expected.

Adrian stepped closer to the door.

He raised both hands.

Showing he wasn’t holding anything.

“Maya.””

His voice was calm.

Gentle.

The kind of voice people used when they wanted someone to lower their guard.

“I know you’re scared.””

Maya immediately stepped backward.

Cole noticed.

“You know him?””

She nodded.

Then shook her head.

Like even she didn’t know what to believe.

Adrian looked past Cole.

Straight at her.

“Maya, please.””

She covered her ears instinctively.

A habit.

A reaction.

She knew she couldn’t hear him.

But the movement wasn’t for him.

It was for herself.

She didn’t want to read his lips.

She didn’t want to understand.

Cole stepped closer to the door.

“Stay outside.””

Adrian looked at him.

“You don’t know what’s happening.””

Cole answered:

“Neither do you.””

A faint smile appeared on Adrian’s face.

“You’re the biker.””

Cole’s expression hardened.

“You know me too?””

“I know everyone involved.””

That sentence made the room colder.

Everyone involved.

Not just Maya.

Not just the warehouse.

Everyone.

Cole looked at Evan.

Then Derek.

Then Grant.

The pieces were finally forming.

This wasn’t one person chasing Maya.

This was a chain.

A secret passed from person to person.

Adrian knocked softly on the door.

“Maya, you need to come with me.””

She immediately shook her head.

Her hands moved.

*Why?*

Adrian looked at her.

“Because they’re all here.””

He pointed inside.

At Grant.

At Evan.

At Derek.

“They’re the reason you’re in danger.””

Maya stared.

Then looked at Grant.

Grant laughed.

A bitter sound.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

Not much.

But enough.

“You’re still alive because of me.””

Grant stepped forward.

“You’re alive because she forgot.””

The words hit the room.

Maya froze.

Cole turned.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Adrian looked away.

Grant smiled.

“There it is.””

He looked at Maya.

“The part nobody wanted you to remember.””

Maya’s hands trembled.

She signed:

*What did you do to me?*

The question was directed at Adrian.

The doctor’s face changed.

A small crack in his perfect calm.

“Maya…”

She stepped back.

No.

She didn’t want his explanation.

Not yet.

Because she already knew.

Doctors fixed things.

Doctors also knew how to change things.

Cole noticed Adrian’s hesitation.

“You treated her.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Yes.””

“After the accident.””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Adrian was silent.

That silence was an answer.

Cole’s voice lowered.

“You erased something.””

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“I protected her.””

Maya stared.

Her hands moved sharply.

*You changed my memory.*

Adrian didn’t respond.

He didn’t need to.

Everyone knew.

Lily covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.””

Derek looked sick.

“You said she wouldn’t remember.””

Adrian turned toward him.

“You weren’t supposed to be involved.””

Derek stepped back.

That one sentence revealed something important.

Derek wasn’t part of the plan.

Not completely.

He was another person who got pulled in.

Another person who made choices and regretted them later.

Cole looked at Adrian.

“You used a deaf woman who trusted you.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t understand medicine.””

Cole stepped forward.

“I understand betrayal.””

The two men stared at each other.

Then Maya moved.

Everyone looked at her.

She walked toward the counter.

Slowly.

She opened her phone.

Her hands moved.

Typing.

Then she turned the screen around.

A message.

*IF YOU HELPED ME, WHY DID I NEED TO BE PROTECTED FROM YOU?*

Nobody spoke.

Adrian looked at the screen.

For the first time, he looked tired.

Not dangerous.

Not powerful.

Just tired.

“Maya…”

She shook her head.

She didn’t want excuses.

She wanted the truth.

Adrian finally stepped away from the door.

“I didn’t erase your memory.””

Everyone looked surprised.

Grant laughed.

“Of course you would say that.””

Adrian ignored him.

“I suppressed it.””

Cole frowned.

“What’s the difference?””

Adrian looked at Maya.

“The difference is that your brain did it because it was trying to survive.””

Maya froze.

Adrian continued.

“You suffered severe trauma that night. The accident. The stress. The fear.””

He paused.

“The memory was fragmented.””

Maya stared.

“So you didn’t make me forget?””

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

Then he added:

“But I helped keep it buried.””

The honesty was worse.

Maya’s expression changed.

Because sometimes the truth hurt more when it came quietly.

Grant suddenly moved.

He shoved a table aside and ran toward the broken door.

Cole reacted instantly.

He grabbed him.

The two men crashed into the wall.

Grant fought harder than before.

Not because he was stronger.

Because he was desperate.

“He has the files!”” Grant shouted.

Everyone stopped.

Cole held him.

“What files?””

Grant looked at Maya.

“The files from the accident.””

Adrian’s face changed.

That was the first time he looked afraid.

Cole saw it.

“What files?””

Grant smiled.

“The proof.””

The diner became silent.

Maya looked at Adrian.

“What proof?””

Adrian said nothing.

Cole released Grant just enough to turn toward him.

“Answer her.””

Adrian looked outside.

The rain.

The darkness.

The broken door.

Then he spoke.

“The woman in the car wasn’t just a victim.””

Maya waited.

“She was an accountant.””

Cole frowned.

“For who?””

Adrian looked at Grant.

“For the organization they all worked for.””

The words landed heavily.

Derek lowered his eyes.

Evan looked away.

Maya understood.

The accident wasn’t random.

The warehouse wasn’t random.

Her seeing them wasn’t random.

She had discovered something.

Something worth killing for.

Adrian continued.

“The woman had evidence.””

Maya touched the necklace.

The pendant.

“The necklace.””

Adrian nodded.

“She hid a copy of the evidence inside it.””

Everyone stared.

Grant’s face twisted.

“That belongs to me.””

Cole stepped between him and Maya.

“No.””

Grant smiled.

“You still don’t understand.””

He looked at Maya.

“The necklace isn’t the only thing she kept.””

Maya went still.

“What?””

Grant pointed at her.

“Your memory.””

The lights flickered again.

Then a sound came from outside.

Not a car.

Not thunder.

A siren.

Police.

Everyone looked toward the road.

Relief almost entered the room.

Almost.

Then Maya noticed something.

Adrian noticed too.

The police cars outside weren’t slowing down.

They were stopping.

Surrounding the diner.

Cole looked through the window.

His expression changed.

“Something’s wrong.””

Maya looked.

Several officers stepped out.

But they weren’t looking at Grant.

They weren’t looking at Evan.

They were looking at her.

Adrian whispered:

“They’re not here to rescue you.””

Cole turned.

“Then why are they here?””

Adrian looked at Maya.

Because he knew the answer.

And he knew she wouldn’t like it.

“They came because someone reported you.””

Maya stared.

“Reported me for what?””

Nobody answered.

Then the police loudspeaker outside crackled.

A voice echoed through the rain.

“Maya Carter.””

Her heart stopped.

“Step away from the others.””

The voice continued.

“You are being arrested for the murder of Elena Voss.””

Maya’s face went completely white.

Because Elena Voss was the woman from the car.

The woman she had tried to save.

The woman she remembered dying.

May you like

And now, according to the police…

Maya was the one who killed her.
