Chapter 11: The Man Who Deleted a Life
The door opened slowly.
Nobody moved.
A man stepped inside.
He was not wearing a uniform.
No weapon visible.
No fear.
That was what made him dangerous.
He walked into the room like he belonged there.
Like the entire airport belonged to him.
Daniel looked at him with disgust.
“You should have stayed hidden.””
The man smiled.
“And you should have stopped looking.””
Marcus stared.
“You.””
The man looked at him.
Almost amused.
“Still alive after all these years.””
Arthur stepped forward.
“You know my son.””
The man looked at Arthur.
“Yes.””
Arthur’s face hardened.
“Then you know what you did.””
The man’s smile disappeared.
“I know what I prevented.””
Nia watched him carefully.
“Name.””
The man looked at her.
“You’re Nia Carter.””
She raised her weapon.
“I asked for your name.””
He smiled slightly.
“Victor Hale.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
Nia noticed.
“You know him.””
Daniel nodded.
“Unfortunately.””
Victor walked farther into the room.
Rex immediately moved in front of Nia.
Not Marcus.
Nia.
Victor noticed.
“That’s interesting.””
Nia kept her eyes on him.
“What?””
Victor looked at Rex.
“Your father trained that dog well.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Don’t talk about him.””
Victor ignored him.
“He always believed animals could recognize the truth better than people.””
Daniel’s voice became cold.
“Your problem was that he was right.””
Victor looked at him.
“My problem was that your friend refused to accept reality.””
Nia’s eyes narrowed.
“My father died because of you.””
Victor looked at her.
“No.””
The answer was calm.
Too calm.
“Your father died because he made choices.””
Nia felt anger rise.
“What choices?””
Victor looked around the room.
“Choices that put everyone here in danger.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“You erased my identity.””
Victor looked at him.
“I protected the operation.””
“You buried me.””
“I saved hundreds of lives.””
Arthur stepped forward.
“You destroyed my family.””
Victor finally looked at him.
“And I’m sorry for that.””
The apology sounded empty.
Nia saw it immediately.
Someone who truly regretted something did not speak like that.
“You expect us to believe you?””
Victor looked at the badge on Nia’s uniform.
“Your father believed me once.””
Nia froze.
“No, he didn’t.””
Victor smiled.
“He did.””
Daniel interrupted.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Victor looked at Daniel.
“You always were the emotional one.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You murdered him.””
Victor’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Nia noticed.
“You did.””
Victor looked at her.
“You have your father’s instincts.””
“Answer me.””
A long pause.
Then Victor said:
“I didn’t kill your father.””
Nia stared.
“Then who did?””
Victor looked toward Marcus.
“Ask him.””
Everyone turned.
Marcus froze.
“What?””
Victor smiled.
“Your friend didn’t tell you everything.””
Daniel’s face changed.
Nia looked at him.
“Daniel?””
He said nothing.
That was enough.
Marcus turned.
“What is he talking about?””
Daniel looked down.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“You knew something.””
Daniel swallowed.
“I knew part of it.””
Arthur looked betrayed.
“Part?””
Daniel looked at them.
“Your father discovered Marcus was alive because of a message.””
Nia listened.
“What message?””
Daniel looked at Rex.
“The dog brought it.””
Marcus frowned.
“Rex?””
Daniel nodded.
“The night Marcus disappeared, Rex returned alone.””
Marcus looked confused.
“He was with me.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not at first.””
He reached into his pocket.
He pulled out an old photo.
Nia recognized it immediately.
Another faded photograph.
But this one was different.
It showed Rex standing beside someone.
Not Marcus.
Not her father.
Someone else.
Victor looked away.
Daniel placed the photo on the table.
Marcus stared.
“That’s impossible.””
Nia leaned closer.
The person beside Rex was wearing a military uniform.
But the face…
The face looked exactly like Marcus.
Only older.
Marcus whispered:
“That’s me.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Arthur stepped back.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“It means you weren’t the first Marcus Carter to disappear.””
The room went silent.
Rex suddenly barked.
A single sharp sound.
Everyone turned.
The dog was staring at the photo.
Then at Marcus.
Then at the wall behind Victor.
Nia noticed something.
A hidden panel.
Rex moved toward it.
Victor’s expression changed for the first time.
Fear.
“Stop him.””
Nia saw it.
The fear.
And she understood.
May you like
Whatever was behind that wall…
Victor did not want them to find it.
