Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The recording played again.

“My own.””

Marcus’s words stayed in the air.

Nia stared at him.

“You’re saying that was your voice?””

Marcus did not respond.

He was watching the small device on the floor like it was something dangerous.

Arthur looked between them.

“I don’t understand.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Neither did I.””

The officers surrounding Gate D24 began moving closer.

Nia noticed their formation.

They were not approaching like they were responding to an emergency.

They were approaching like they were following a plan.

She stepped in front of Marcus.

“Officer Carter: Nobody moves until I understand what’s happening.””

One of the officers stopped.

“Officer: Carter, you don’t have clearance.””

“Nia: I have enough clearance to know when something is wrong.””

The officer’s expression tightened.

Marcus looked at her.

“You shouldn’t get involved.””

Nia turned slightly.

“A man declared dead just walked into my airport with a police dog recognizing him. I’m already involved.””

For the first time, Marcus almost smiled.

Almost.

Then Arthur grabbed his son’s arm.

“Arthur: Tell me.””

Marcus looked down.

His father’s hand was shaking.

“Arthur: I spent three years visiting a grave with your name on it.””

Marcus looked away.

That hurt more than any accusation.

“Marcus: I wanted to come back.””

“Arthur: Then why didn’t you?””

Marcus took a breath.

“Because someone made sure I couldn’t.””

Nia listened carefully.

“Who?””

Marcus looked toward the cameras above the terminal.

“People inside the system.””

The words landed heavily.

Arthur shook his head.

“No.””

Marcus looked at him.

“I wish I was wrong.””

He reached into his jacket.

Nia immediately reacted.

“Slowly.””

Marcus stopped.

“I’m not reaching for a weapon.””

He pulled out a small folded piece of paper.

Old.

Damaged.

He handed it to Arthur.

Arthur unfolded it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then widened.

“What is this?””

Marcus looked down.

“The last thing I wrote before they took me.””

Nia stepped closer.

It was not a letter.

It was a list.

Names.

Dates.

Locations.

Evidence.

Arthur looked at his son.

“Why did you hide this?””

Marcus shook his head.

“I didn’t.””

A silence followed.

“Marcus: Someone else did.””

Nia looked at Rex.

The dog remained beside Marcus.

A living connection between past and present.

“Marcus: Rex was the only reason I survived.””

Arthur looked confused.

“How?””

Marcus touched the dog’s head.

“He found me.””

Nia watched his face.

“After the mission?””

Marcus nodded.

“I was injured. Lost. Everyone thought I was gone.””

He paused.

“Rex kept coming back.””

Arthur’s eyes filled.

“He searched for you?””

Marcus nodded.

“He refused to leave.””

Nia looked at the photograph again.

The young soldier.

The younger dog.

A moment frozen before everything changed.

“Marcus: Someone eventually found us.””

Arthur’s expression changed.

“Who?””

Marcus looked toward the officers.

“Someone who knew exactly where we were.””

A loud announcement suddenly interrupted.

“Attention passengers. Please remain in your current location.””

The message sounded normal.

But Nia noticed something.

The airport screens had changed.

Every monitor near Gate D24 displayed the same image.

The faded photograph.

The one Arthur had been carrying.

A wave of confusion spread through the terminal.

Passengers lifted their phones.

People whispered.

Nia looked at Marcus.

“How did they get that?””

Marcus did not answer.

Because he already knew.

Arthur stared at the screens.

“My son…”

Marcus grabbed his father’s shoulder.

“Dad, listen to me.””

Arthur looked at him.

“If they’re showing this publicly, they don’t want to hide me anymore.””

Nia looked around.

“What do they want?””

Marcus’s face became serious.

“They want everyone to believe I’m something I’m not.””

A voice came over the airport speakers.

Not automated.

A person.

“Officer Carter.””

Nia froze.

The voice continued.

“You are currently assisting a wanted individual.””

The entire terminal went silent.

Marcus looked at her.

“They’re making you choose.””

Nia stared at the speaker.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who knows what happened to Marcus Carter.””

Arthur looked confused.

“Carter?””

Nia’s eyes narrowed.

That was her last name.

The voice continued.

“And the person who knows why Rex was sent to find him.””

Rex suddenly barked.

Not at Marcus.

Not at the officers.

At the ceiling.

Nia looked up.

A camera above Gate D24 slowly turned toward them.

Then the voice whispered:

“Officer Carter… your father knew too.””

Nia went completely still.

May you like

Because nobody at the airport knew her father.

Nobody should have known.
