Chapter 8: The Recording That Changed Everything

The airport went silent.

Not completely.

There were still footsteps.

Still voices.

Still distant announcements.

But the screens above Gate D24 had turned dark.

Every single one.

Passengers looked upward.

Confused.

Concerned.

Nia stared at the black monitors.

Then at the small video drive in her hand.

“They want us to watch this.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Nia looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because if someone prepared this, they prepared for a reason.””

Arthur looked between them.

“Then why send it?””

Marcus looked at the screen.

“To make us see something.””

Nia inserted the drive into a nearby security terminal.

The system rejected it.

ACCESS DENIED.

She tried again.

Same result.

The security officer stepped forward.

“You need to stop.””

Nia turned.

“Why?””

“Because you’re interfering with airport operations.””

She looked at the dark screens.

“Someone already did that.””

The officer moved closer.

Marcus immediately stepped between them.

The officer stopped.

Rex growled.

Again.

That changed everything.

Because everyone understood.

The dog was not reacting to a threat.

He was warning them.

The officer slowly backed away.

Nia noticed.

“Who are you really?””

The officer looked at her.

Then at Marcus.

“I’m someone trying to keep people alive.””

Marcus laughed once.

No humor.

“That’s what they all say.””

The screens suddenly flickered.

The video began.

A grainy image appeared.

A younger Marcus.

Wearing military gear.

Standing beside Rex.

Nia watched silently.

The recording was not from the airport.

It was from a field operation.

Marcus looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“I don’t remember this.””

The video showed him speaking with someone off-camera.

A man.

Older.

Wearing security identification.

Nia leaned closer.

She recognized him.

Her heart dropped.

“My father.””

Arthur looked at her.

“Are you sure?””

Nia nodded.

“That’s him.””

On the screen, her father handed Marcus something.

A folder.

Marcus in the recording looked confused.

Then her father said something.

The airport speakers suddenly connected to the video audio.

Everyone heard it.

“You’re not dead, Marcus.””

The terminal froze.

The younger Marcus looked shocked.

“I don’t understand.””

Nia’s father continued.

“They need everyone to believe you disappeared.””

The video cut briefly.

Then returned.

Her father looked directly at the camera.

Not at Marcus.

At whoever was recording.

“If my daughter ever sees this, it means I failed.””

Nia stopped breathing.

Her father’s voice continued.

“Nia, if you’re watching this, trust Rex.””

Her hands shook.

The recording showed her father placing a hand on the dog.

“Rex knows the truth.””

Marcus stared.

“He knew.””

The video continued.

“Marcus, you have something they need.””

Marcus looked at the screen.

“What?””

His younger self asked the same question.

The answer never came.

The recording glitched.

A different voice interrupted.

A voice full of anger.

“Stop recording.””

The screen shook.

Then the image returned.

Nia’s father was closer to the camera.

His face was injured.

But he was still speaking.

“The truth is hidden where nobody looks.””

He looked down.

At his own badge.

Then back at the camera.

“Inside the badge.””

Nia looked at her badge.

The room felt smaller.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Your father knew.””

She nodded slowly.

The video ended.

The screens went black again.

Then one final message appeared.

Not from the recording.

A live message.

Three words.

*LOOK UNDERNEATH REX.*

Everyone looked at the dog.

Rex stood perfectly still.

Nia approached him slowly.

“Rex…”

The dog lowered himself.

Waiting.

Marcus crouched beside him.

“What is under him?””

Nia carefully checked the floor.

At first, nothing.

Then she noticed it.

A tiny metal plate.

Hidden beneath the chair where Rex had been sitting.

She removed it.

Inside was a small compartment.

And inside that compartment was a key.

Arthur stared.

“A key?””

Nia picked it up.

Engraved on the metal was a number.

D24.

Marcus looked at the restricted door.

His face changed.

“No.””

Nia looked at him.

“What?””

Marcus whispered:

“That’s not a gate number.””

The lights flickered again.

The restricted door unlocked.

Marcus stepped back.

“That’s the room where they kept me.””
