Chapter 15: The Dog Who Brought Them Home
The hidden passage was silent.
Too silent.
Nia walked behind Marcus and Rex, holding the photograph tightly.
Her mind was full of questions.
Her father.
Her mother.
Marcus.
The program.
Everything she believed about her family had been rewritten in one night.
Arthur walked beside her.
“You’re thinking too much.””
Nia looked at him.
He gave a small smile.
“My son does the same thing.””
She looked ahead.
At Marcus.
“He’s not your son?””
Arthur looked at him.
Then at Rex.
Then back at her.
“I don’t know what the world says.””
His voice softened.
“I know what my heart says.””
Nia looked down.
She understood.
Because sometimes truth was not hidden in documents.
Sometimes it was hidden in people.
They reached the end of the passage.
A door waited.
Daniel unlocked it.
Outside was another part of the airport.
Quiet.
Empty.
Safe.
For now.
Marcus stepped out first.
Rex followed.
Then stopped.
The dog looked back.
At Nia.
She smiled slightly.
“You’re waiting for me?””
Rex moved closer.
Then sat.
Daniel watched.
“Your father was right.””
Nia looked at him.
“About what?””
“Rex doesn’t follow people.””
The dog looked toward the terminal.
“He chooses them.””
Before anyone could answer, Nia’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone stopped.
She answered.
“Hello?””
A voice came through.
An old voice.
A familiar voice.
Her mother.
“Nia.””
Her heart stopped.
“Mom?””
Arthur looked at her.
Marcus stepped closer.
The voice trembled.
“I’ve been waiting for this call.””
Nia gripped the phone.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“Somewhere your father hid me.””
Nia closed her eyes.
“Why?””
Her mother breathed heavily.
“Because he knew they would come for me after him.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
Everyone understood.
There was more.
Much more.
“Nia,” her mother whispered.
“Yes?””
“Did Rex find him?””
Nia looked at the dog.
“Yes.””
A quiet sob came through the phone.
“Then your father was right.””
Nia swallowed.
“Right about what?””
Her mother answered:
“He said the truth would come home with four paws.””
The call ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Rex suddenly turned.
Across the terminal.
A man stood watching them.
Older.
Gray hair.
Wearing a worn jacket.
Holding a faded photograph.
Marcus froze.
Nia noticed.
“Who is that?””
Marcus stared.
His face changed.
Because the man looked exactly like him.
Not a photograph.
Not a file.
A living person.
The man slowly raised the picture.
The same picture Arthur had received.
The soldier beside Rex.
Then he spoke.
“Marcus.””
Everyone froze.
The man smiled sadly.
“I was wondering when you would finally find me.””
Arthur stepped forward.
“No…”
Marcus whispered:
“Who are you?””
The man looked at Rex.
The dog walked toward him.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Then stopped between the two men.
The man answered:
“I’m the first.””
Nia held her breath.
The mystery that began at Gate D24 had finally reached its beginning.
But Rex was still standing between them.
May you like
Because the dog did not choose a side.
He was waiting for the truth to reveal itself.
