Chapter 13: The Truth Rex Carried
Nobody moved.
The recording had ended, but the words remained.
*I am not the first Marcus Carter.*
The room felt smaller than before.
Marcus stared at the device on the table.
His face had lost all color.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Almost like he was trying to convince himself.
“No.””
Arthur stepped closer.
“Son…”
Marcus looked at him.
But there was fear in his eyes now.
Not fear of Victor.
Not fear of the people outside.
Fear of himself.
Daniel watched him carefully.
“Marcus.””
Marcus turned sharply.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Daniel looked down.
That was the answer.
The silence.
The hesitation.
Everything Marcus had been afraid of was sitting right in front of him.
“You knew.””
Daniel swallowed.
“I knew there were questions.””
“No.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You knew.””
His voice became louder.
“You knew I wasn’t the only one.””
Daniel looked at Rex.
“I knew Rex was the only one who could tell the difference.””
Nia looked at the dog.
The words from her father returned.
*Trust the dog, Nia.*
She understood now.
Rex was never following Marcus because of a memory.
He was following him because he knew the truth.
“Explain,” Nia said.
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Years ago, your father discovered something impossible.””
He looked at Marcus.
“There were two people connected to the same identity.””
Arthur shook his head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Daniel looked at him.
“It wasn’t supposed to.””
He opened another file.
Inside was a photograph.
Two young men.
Standing side by side.
Same face.
Same height.
Same eyes.
One had a scar near his jaw.
The other didn’t.
Nia stared.
“How?””
Daniel sighed.
“They weren’t twins.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Then what were they?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Subjects.””
The word made everyone uncomfortable.
“Subjects of a program designed to create perfect replacements.””
Arthur stepped back.
“No.””
Victor finally spoke.
“You wanted the truth.””
Everyone turned.
Victor looked exhausted now.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just tired.
“The world is not as simple as you want it to be.””
Nia glared.
“Don’t make this sound like you did something necessary.””
Victor looked at her.
“Your father said the same thing.””
She froze.
Victor continued.
“He believed every secret could be exposed if the right person looked hard enough.””
Daniel’s voice turned cold.
“And he was right.””
Victor ignored him.
“The program was created because governments lose people. Soldiers. Agents. Witnesses.””
Marcus stared.
“So you replaced them?””
Victor nodded slightly.
“We preserved information.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“You erased people.””
Victor looked at him.
“Sometimes survival requires sacrifice.””
Arthur stepped forward.
“You sacrificed my son.””
Victor looked away.
For the first time, he looked ashamed.
A sudden noise interrupted them.
The hallway alarm started.
Red lights flashed.
Nia looked toward the door.
“They’re coming.””
Daniel moved quickly.
“We need to leave.””
Marcus didn’t move.
He was still staring at the photographs.
At the two faces.
At the impossible truth.
“Nia.””
She looked at him.
“What?””
Marcus pointed to the second photograph.
“The other one.””
She looked closer.
The man beside him had something in his hand.
A dog tag.
She zoomed in.
The name was barely visible.
But it was enough.
Her face changed.
“Marcus…”
He looked at her.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“The other man’s name isn’t Carter.””
Everyone looked closer.
The name was engraved clearly now.
*MICHAEL REED.*
Marcus stepped back.
“Who is Michael Reed?””
Daniel answered quietly.
“Someone who died before you were born.””
Silence.
Then Rex suddenly moved.
The dog ran to the far wall.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was one final item.
A small black box.
Marcus opened it.
Inside was a military identification card.
Not his.
Not Michael Reed’s.
Someone else’s.
Nia picked it up.
Her hands froze.
Because the photo on the card was familiar.
Very familiar.
She looked at Marcus.
Then at the card.
Then whispered:
“No…”
Marcus looked.
“What?””
Nia slowly turned the card around.
The picture showed a young man.
A young Black soldier.
Standing beside Rex.
And beside him was her father.
The name on the card read:
May you like
*JAMES CARTER.*
Her father.
