Chapter 10: The Person Behind The Warning
The message stayed on the screen.
*THE MISTAKE WAS LETTING HER LIVE.*
For a moment, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The emergency lights painted the auditorium in a dark red glow, making every face look unfamiliar.
Even my own reflection on the black stage monitor looked like someone I didn’t recognize.
My mother grabbed my hand.
“Maya.””
I pulled away.
Not because I didn’t love her.
Because I didn’t know what to believe anymore.
The doors at the back of the auditorium remained closed.
But everyone was staring at them.
Waiting.
For someone to enter.
For someone to explain.
For someone to finish the story that had been destroying my life one secret at a time.
My father stepped toward the control room.
“We need to leave.””
Dr. Carter shook her head.
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What do you mean, no?””
“I mean whoever sent that message wants us to leave.””
The room went quiet.
Amara looked toward the screen.
“She’s right.””
I looked at her.
“You know who it is?””
She didn’t answer.
That was becoming everyone’s favorite response.
Silence.
Half-truths.
Hidden meanings.
I walked toward her.
“Look at me.””
She did.
“If you know something, tell me.””
Her expression softened.
“I know someone has been watching this family for a long time.””
“My family?””
She nodded.
“Not just yours.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Amara glanced at my mother.
“It means the night you were born wasn’t the beginning of this.””
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Everyone froze.
Marcus moved in front of me.
My father.
The man who had spent years hiding the truth.
Still trying to protect me.
The irony almost hurt.
The footsteps stopped outside the door.
Then a voice spoke.
“You always did choose the wrong people to trust, Marcus.””
My father went completely still.
I had never seen him look afraid like that.
“Who is that?”” I whispered.
He didn’t answer.
The door opened.
A man walked inside.
Black suit.
Gray hair.
Calm expression.
He wasn’t rushing.
He wasn’t threatening.
He walked like he owned the room.
My mother’s face changed.
“No…”
The man smiled.
“Hello, Nia.””
My father whispered:
“Richard.””
I looked at Marcus.
“Who is Richard?””
Nobody responded.
The man answered himself.
“I’m the person who made sure you had a life, Maya.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
He smiled.
“It will.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Richard looked amused.
“You still think you’re in control.””
“You threatened Vanessa.””
Richard glanced toward her.
“Did she tell you that?””
Vanessa stepped back.
Her face was pale.
Richard smiled.
“I didn’t threaten her.””
Everyone stared.
“I simply reminded her what happens when people interfere with things they don’t understand.””
My mother’s voice shook.
“You ruined everything.””
Richard looked at her.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I saved everything.””
I hated how calmly he said it.
Like he truly believed it.
I stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
Richard looked at me for a long moment.
Then he said:
“I was the person who signed the papers that made you Maya Johnson.””
The words hit harder than anything else tonight.
My father looked away.
My mother started crying.
Amara whispered:
“Richard Bell.””
I looked at her.
“Your father?””
She nodded.
The room became silent.
Richard looked at Amara.
“You always were the emotional one.””
Her face hardened.
“You told my parents I died.””
“I protected you.””
“You stole my entire life.””
Richard sighed.
“This is why you never understood.””
I stared at him.
“You’re her father?””
He looked at me.
“One of them.””
The answer made my skin crawl.
“One of them?””
Richard walked closer.
“The truth is, Maya, everyone here has been lying to you.””
My mother stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Richard smiled.
“Interesting.””
He looked at her.
“After seventeen years, you still want to pretend you’re innocent.””
I turned toward my mother.
“What does he mean?””
Nia shook her head.
“Maya, please.””
Richard continued.
“She knew.””
My heart stopped.
“Knew what?””
He looked directly at me.
“She knew you weren’t her biological daughter.””
My mother closed her eyes.
The silence confirmed it.
I felt something inside me break.
Not because it was new.
Because I had hoped it wasn’t true.
Richard leaned closer.
“And she wasn’t the only one.””
He looked at Marcus.
“Your father knew too.””
I turned.
“Dad?””
Marcus looked devastated.
“Maya…”
“No.””
My voice became quiet.
“No more excuses.””
I stepped away from everyone.
“All of you knew.””
Nobody denied it.
Richard watched me.
“You see now.””
I looked at him.
“What do you want?””
His expression changed.
For the first time, the calm disappeared.
“I want what should have happened seventeen years ago.””
A chill ran through me.
“What?””
He looked at Amara.
Then at me.
“The family that was separated.””
Nobody spoke.
Richard continued:
“I want my daughter back.””
Amara laughed bitterly.
“I’m not going anywhere with you.””
Richard ignored her.
Because he wasn’t looking at Amara.
He was looking at me.
And that was when I understood.
May you like
He wasn’t trying to take her back.
He was trying to take me.
