Chapter 5: The Name In The Records
The hidden phone stopped ringing.
But the silence it left behind felt worse.
My mother’s unfinished recording stayed frozen on the screen.
*You were not the only baby born in that hospital room.*
Those words repeated inside my head.
Not the only baby.
I looked at my father.
“Who else was there?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
“Dad.””
His eyes were red.
“I was hoping you would never have to know this.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
He sat down slowly in one of the front-row chairs.
For the first time that night, he looked older.
Not like my father.
Like someone who had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.
Vanessa sat beside him.
I hated that they looked like a team.
Like they had always known something I didn’t.
The security guard stepped back.
“I think I should call the police.””
Marcus immediately stood.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
He realized how suspicious it sounded.
He lowered his voice.
“I mean… yes. But before anyone does anything, Maya deserves the truth.””
I crossed my arms.
“I’ve been waiting seventeen years.””
He looked at me.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
The words came out sharper than I intended.
“You knew something about my birth was wrong, and you let me grow up believing everything was normal.””
Marcus looked away.
“Because I wanted you to have a normal life.””
“A normal life built on a lie?””
He had no response.
Vanessa finally spoke.
“Maya, your father didn’t create this.””
I looked at her.
“Then who did?””
She went quiet.
That was when I noticed something.
Her hands were shaking.
Not from guilt.
From fear.
I walked closer.
“Were you there?””
Vanessa looked up.
“At the hospital?””
She didn’t answer.
I already knew.
“You were.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“Yes.””
The room seemed to tilt.
“You knew my mother before you married my father.””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“We were friends.””
The anger inside me shifted into confusion.
“You never told me that.””
“Because your mother asked me not to.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked toward the stage.
At the trophy I had been holding earlier.
“The night you were born changed everyone’s lives.””
I waited.
She took a breath.
“Your mother gave birth to you. Another woman gave birth to another child in the same hospital.””
My heart pounded.
“What child?””
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
He closed his eyes.
“Maya…”
“What child?””
Vanessa whispered:
“A girl.””
I stared at her.
A strange feeling moved through me.
Like my body understood something before my mind did.
“What happened to her?””
Nobody answered.
My father finally said:
“She disappeared.””
The words felt impossible.
“A baby disappeared?””
He nodded.
“The hospital records were changed. Names were removed. Documents were replaced.””
“And my mother found out?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Marcus looked toward the wall.
“Because someone contacted her.””
My stomach dropped.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
I grabbed the notebook again.
The pages shook as I turned them.
There were more notes.
More names.
Then I saw one written repeatedly.
A name my mother had circled dozens of times.
*Amara Bell.*
I looked up.
“Who is Amara Bell?””
Marcus went completely still.
Vanessa whispered:
“Maya…”
I looked between them.
“Why do you both know that name?””
Before either could answer, the auditorium doors slammed open.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
Black coat.
Rainwater on her shoulders.
Breathing heavily.
She looked across the room.
At me.
At my father.
At Vanessa.
Then her eyes landed on the notebook in my hand.
Her face changed.
“You found it.””
Nobody spoke.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The woman ignored him.
She only looked at me.
“My name is Amara.””
My heart stopped.
Because my mother’s notes were full of that name.
The woman took one step closer.
May you like
And said:
“I’m the reason your mother disappeared.””
