Chapter 14: The Last Secret

Vanessa stood alone in the center of the auditorium.

For the first time all night, she didn’t look afraid of Richard.

She didn’t look afraid of my father.

She looked afraid of me.

“Maya…”

I waited.

I didn’t interrupt.

Because I had learned something tonight.

People only tell the truth when they realize they can no longer escape it.

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“When I met your father, I already knew about you.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

She looked at him.

“I knew before we got married.””

The pain on his face was immediate.

“You never told me.””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Many times.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“You were so focused on protecting the secret that you couldn’t see what it was doing to everyone.””

My father looked away.

I stared at her.

“Why did you marry him?””

The question was simple.

The answer wasn’t.

Vanessa looked down.

“Because your mother asked me to.””

Nobody moved.

My mother looked shocked.

“What?””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“You don’t remember?””

Nia shook her head.

“No.””

“Because you were scared.””

Vanessa’s voice became softer.

“The night you found out about the records, you came to my house.””

My mother covered her mouth.

“I…”

“You asked me for help.””

I looked at Nia.

“Why?””

My mother looked devastated.

“Because Vanessa was the only person I trusted.””

Vanessa nodded.

“She asked me to stay close to Marcus.””

I frowned.

“Stay close?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“To make sure you were safe.””

The room went silent.

“You married my father to protect me?””

“Yes.””

Marcus stared at her.

“All these years…”

Vanessa nodded.

“I loved you.””

His expression changed.

“But that wasn’t why I came into your life.””

She looked at me.

“It was because your mother believed someone was still trying to control what happened.””

I looked at Richard.

Then at the others.

“So Vanessa wasn’t hiding something from me.””

My mother shook her head.

“She was protecting you too.””

I felt overwhelmed.

Every person in this room had hurt me.

And somehow, every person had also tried to save me.

The line between betrayal and love had become impossible to see.

Then Richard laughed quietly.

Everyone looked at him.

“You really believe all of this makes you innocent?””

Vanessa turned.

“You’re the one who started this.””

Richard smiled.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“She did.””

He pointed at Nia.

My mother froze.

“What?””

Richard stepped closer.

“The truth is, Nia was the first person who made a choice.””

My stomach tightened.

“What choice?””

My mother looked terrified.

“Richard.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“She knows.””

I turned to Nia.

“Mom?””

She closed her eyes.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

Her voice broke.

“The night you were born…”

She struggled to continue.

“I knew there was another baby.””

Everyone went silent.

I felt numb.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Because when they brought you to me…”

She started crying.

“They told me there had been a mistake.””

I stared at her.

“And you took me anyway?””

She nodded.

“I held you.””

Her voice shook.

“And I couldn’t let you go.””

Nobody spoke.

Not even Richard.

My mother stepped closer.

“I made the wrong choice for the right reason.””

I whispered:

“You chose me.””

“Yes.””

“Over her.””

She looked at Celeste.

Tears filled both women’s eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

But it was the truth.

Celeste stepped forward.

“I spent seventeen years angry at you.””

She looked at Nia.

“But I understand now.””

My mother cried harder.

“I’m sorry.””

Celeste nodded.

“I know.””

Then she looked at me.

“But there is still something you don’t know.””

I turned.

“What?””

Celeste reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Worn.

Like it had been carried for years.

“This was left for you the night you were born.””

My hands shook.

“By who?””

She looked at Richard.

His face changed.

“No.””

Celeste handed it to me.

“By the person who knew everything before anyone else.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was familiar.

My mother’s.

But not Nia’s.

A name appeared at the bottom.

A name that made everyone freeze.

*Amara Bell.*

I looked at Amara.

She looked just as shocked as me.

“I never wrote that.””

The room went silent.

Then the letter’s final line caught my eye.

*Maya, if you are reading this, it means they found out I was never the missing daughter.*

I stopped breathing.

Amara whispered:

“What?””

I read the next sentence.

May you like

And the truth finally came.

*Because I was the one who helped them hide you.*
