Chapter 13: The Mother Who Waited

For seventeen years, I imagined what this moment would feel like.

I imagined my mother walking through a door.

I imagined tears.

I imagined running into her arms.

I imagined everything becoming simple the second I saw her.

But when Celeste Johnson stood in front of me, nothing felt simple.

Because I already had a mother.

And she was standing only a few feet away, crying.

The woman at the door looked at me like she had memorized my face from a photograph she carried every day.

Like she knew every detail of me without ever being there.

Her eyes moved from my navy dress to the trophy sitting on the stage.

Then back to me.

“You won an award tonight.””

I froze.

“How do you know that?””

Her lips trembled.

“Because I’ve watched you.””

The words sent a chill through me.

My father immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

Celeste looked at him.

“You don’t get to say no anymore, Marcus.””

His face tightened.

“You followed her?””

“I protected her.””

“From what?””

Celeste looked around the room.

At Richard.

At Dr. Carter.

At Nia.

“From all of you.””

Nobody spoke.

I stared at Celeste.

“You knew where I was?””

She nodded.

“I knew where you lived. I knew your favorite color. I knew you hated tomatoes but loved your grandmother’s peach cobbler recipe. I knew you cried when you got your first rejection letter from the scholarship program.””

My breath caught.

“How?””

She looked down.

“Because I was there.””

The room went silent.

“What do you mean?””

Celeste swallowed.

“I watched from a distance.””

The pain in her face was impossible to ignore.

“I watched you ride your bike. I watched you go to school. I watched your father teach you how to drive.””

Her voice cracked.

“And every year, I told myself I would tell you the truth.””

I looked at Nia.

“Then why didn’t you?””

Celeste looked at her.

The two women stared at each other.

Two mothers.

Two lives connected by one terrible night.

Nia finally spoke.

“Because we were afraid.””

Celeste nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked between them.

“Afraid of what?””

Richard answered.

“Afraid of what would happen if the truth came out.””

Everyone turned toward him.

I had almost forgotten he was still there.

Almost.

“You knew she was alive.””

Richard looked at me.

“Yes.””

“And you kept us apart.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was terrifying.

I stepped closer.

“Why?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Because I thought I could fix what happened.””

Celeste laughed bitterly.

“You thought you could control it.””

Richard ignored her.

“When the hospital mistake happened, everything changed.””

Dr. Carter interrupted.

“It wasn’t a mistake.””

Richard looked at her.

“Be careful.””

She didn’t flinch.

“It was a choice.””

The room became tense.

I looked at Richard.

“You moved me.””

He stayed silent.

“You took me away from my mother.””

His jaw tightened.

“I believed I was protecting you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“You were protecting yourself.””

That hit him.

For the first time, he looked older.

Tired.

Not powerful.

Just human.

Celeste walked toward me slowly.

“I wanted to hold you.””

I looked at her.

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Because every time I tried, someone reminded me that you were safe where you were.””

She looked at Nia.

“And Nia loved you.””

Nia closed her eyes.

“I did.””

Celeste nodded.

“I know.””

That surprised me.

“You’re not angry?””

Celeste looked at her.

“I was.””

A pause.

“For years.””

She looked back at me.

“But then I saw the way Maya looked at you.””

My mother started crying.

“And I knew.””

Celeste smiled sadly.

“You didn’t steal my daughter.””

She looked at Nia.

“You became her mother.””

The words broke something inside me.

Because suddenly the truth wasn’t about choosing.

It wasn’t about one mother winning.

It was about everyone losing something.

My phone vibrated.

Everyone looked down.

Another message.

This time from an unknown number.

*RICHARD IS NOT THE ONLY PERSON WHO CHANGED YOUR LIFE.*

My stomach dropped.

I looked at Richard.

Then at Celeste.

“Who else?””

Nobody answered.

The message continued.

*ASK VANESSA WHY SHE REALLY MARRIED YOUR FATHER.*

Everyone turned.

Vanessa went completely still.

My heart sank.

Not again.

Another secret.

Another person.

Another piece of my life I didn’t know existed.

“Vanessa?””

She looked at me.

And this time…

May you like

she didn’t try to hide.

“I think it’s time you knew.””
