Chapter 3: The Secret They Buried

The ringing started softer this time.

Almost like someone was calling from a place where they didn’t want to be heard.

The entire auditorium became still.

My father stared at the wall.

Vanessa stared at me.

And I stared at the message glowing on my phone.

*ASK YOUR FATHER WHY HE LIED ABOUT THE NIGHT YOU WERE BORN.*

My hands felt cold.

I looked at Marcus.

“Is this true?””

He didn’t answer.

That was the worst possible answer.

“Dad.””

He opened his mouth.

Closed it.

Then looked down.

For years, I believed my father was the one person who would never hide anything from me.

Now I wasn’t sure I knew him at all.

“Maya,” he said quietly, “there are things you don’t understand.””

I shook my head.

“No. There are things you don’t want me to understand.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Please listen.””

I turned toward her.

“You knew too.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I knew something was wrong.””

“But you stayed quiet.””

“I was trying to keep our family together.””

I looked around the auditorium.

The same place where everyone had watched me receive my award.

The same place where I was supposed to feel proud.

Instead, I felt like I had walked into a room where everyone knew the ending except me.

My father took a slow breath.

“Your mother and I made mistakes.””

I froze.

“Made?””

He looked at me.

“I never wanted you caught in the middle.””

“Caught between what?””

He didn’t answer.

The hidden phone rang again.

This time, the sound came from directly behind the wall.

The security guard moved closer.

“I’m going to check that area.””

“No!””

Vanessa’s voice came out sharper than expected.

Everyone looked at her.

She lowered her voice.

“I mean… be careful.””

The guard frowned but walked toward the wall.

I watched Vanessa.

“You’re scared of what’s behind there.””

She didn’t deny it.

That terrified me more.

The guard inspected the wall carefully.

“There’s a maintenance panel here.””

My father stepped forward.

“Maya, stay back.””

But I didn’t.

I had spent seventeen years being told what I could handle.

Tonight, I was done listening.

The guard reached for the panel.

The phone rang again.

My mother’s phone in my hand vibrated at the exact same moment.

A call.

Same caller ID.

*MOM.*

Everyone saw it.

The room went silent.

I answered.

“Mom?””

A breath.

A faint sound.

Then nothing.

“Mom, please.””

My voice broke.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Maya?””

I held the phone tighter.

“Someone’s there.””

Vanessa whispered, “No…”

I looked at her.

“You know who.””

Her eyes filled with fear.

The call ended.

Immediately, a new message appeared.

No name.

No number.

Just words.

*DON’T OPEN THAT DOOR.*

My father read it.

His face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“Marcus,” Vanessa whispered.

He didn’t look at her.

Because he was staring at the maintenance panel.

The guard placed his hand on the handle.

I stepped closer.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

For a moment, he looked like the father who taught me how to ride a bike. The father who showed up to every school event. The father who always promised he would keep me safe.

Then he said the words I never expected.

“Maya… your mother wasn’t looking for something.””

The room went quiet.

“She was looking for someone.””

The guard pulled the panel slightly.

A small click echoed through the auditorium.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

May you like

And from behind the wall…

A phone began ringing again.
