Chapter 3: The Second Envelope

The man standing at the edge of the garden looked uncomfortable.

Like he had walked into a storm and realized too late that everyone was watching.

Marcus lowered the first envelope.

“Who are you?””

The man swallowed.

“My name is Daniel.””

Evelyn’s face went pale.

“Daniel, you need to leave.””

The way she said it told everyone one thing.

She knew exactly who he was.

Marcus turned slowly toward his mother.

“You know him?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“I’m sorry. I should have come sooner.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Sooner for what?””

The man held up the envelope in his hand.

“I have something you need to see.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Even the guests who had been whispering moments earlier were silent.

I felt Marcus’s hand reach for mine.

His fingers were cold.

“Mom,” he said.

Evelyn stared at Daniel.

“Don’t do this.””

Daniel looked away.

“You had years to tell him.””

That sentence changed the atmosphere.

Marcus tightened his grip on my hand.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn’s eyes flashed.

“Daniel is nobody.””

Daniel looked hurt.

“Nobody?””

He laughed softly.

“That’s what you told him?””

I watched Marcus’s expression shift.

He was no longer angry.

He was trying to understand.

“Mom…”

Evelyn walked toward Daniel.

“This is not your place.””

Daniel stepped back.

“My place disappeared a long time ago.””

The words were strange.

Heavy.

Like they belonged to a story nobody else knew.

Marcus looked at me.

“Did you know about him?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

And I meant it.

The last thing I wanted was another secret.

Especially not today.

Marcus turned back to Daniel.

“What’s in that envelope?””

Daniel looked down.

“I don’t know if I should be the one to tell you.””

Marcus’s voice sharpened.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

He looked around.

“My wife says my mother knew something. My mother says she was protecting me. Now you show up with another envelope.””

He stepped closer.

“I’m done being the last person to know.””

The words hit Evelyn.

For a moment, she looked less like a powerful woman controlling the room.

She looked like a mother who was terrified.

“Nobody opens anything today,” she said.

Marcus stared.

“Why?””

“Because you don’t know what you’re asking for.””

I stepped closer.

“Marcus.””

He looked at me.

I wanted to protect him.

But I also knew something.

Secrets did not disappear because they were painful.

They only grew.

“Open it,” I whispered.

Evelyn looked at me.

The anger returned.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

I held her gaze.

“No. I know exactly what I’m doing.””

A few guests quietly moved away.

Some gathered their purses.

The celebration was over.

But nobody wanted to leave before knowing why.

Marcus reached toward Daniel’s envelope.

Then stopped.

“What is your connection to my family?””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

Then at Marcus.

“I knew your mother before she met your father.””

Marcus froze.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Daniel.””

But he continued.

“And I know why she wanted those prenatal results before you and Nia received them.””

My heart stopped.

Marcus looked at him.

“Why?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Then looked at Evelyn.

She shook her head.

A warning.

A plea.

Finally, Daniel said:

“Because she was afraid the results would reveal something she spent decades hiding.””

The garden erupted with shocked whispers.

Marcus stared at his mother.

“What did you hide?””

Evelyn said nothing.

For the first time all day, she had no perfect answer.

No clever excuse.

No calm explanation.

Just silence.

Marcus reached toward the envelope again.

Daniel handed it to him.

Two sealed envelopes.

Two secrets.

One family falling apart in front of a cake that still said *IT’S A GIRL*.

Marcus looked at both pieces of paper.

Then at Evelyn.

“Tell me the truth.””

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

But before she could speak, her phone began ringing.

She looked down at the screen.

May you like

And the expression on her face changed.

Because the name calling was someone Marcus had never expected to see.
