Chapter 7: The Daughter in the Photograph

Evelyn didn’t deny it.

That was the part that scared me most.

She didn’t say the message was wrong.

She didn’t say Marcus’s father was lying.

She just stood there.

Silent.

Like someone who had run out of places to hide.

Marcus put his phone away.

“Who is she?””

Evelyn looked exhausted.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“Not another explanation. Not another excuse.””

He stepped closer.

“Who is my sister?””

Daniel reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small photograph.

“I think you should see this.””

Marcus took it.

At first, he just looked confused.

Then his expression changed.

Because the woman in the picture looked familiar.

Not exactly.

But enough.

She had the same eyes.

The same smile.

The same small crease between her eyebrows.

“My father?””

Daniel nodded.

“That’s Claire.””

Marcus stared at the photo.

“And the woman beside her?””

Nobody spoke.

I looked closer.

An older woman stood next to Claire.

A woman with a familiar face.

Marcus noticed too.

“That’s…”

He looked at Evelyn.

“Mom?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The answer shocked him.

“You knew her?””

“I knew who she was.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Evelyn looked away.

“Because your father left, and I wanted you to stop chasing people who chose not to stay.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You made that choice for me.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than a lie.

Marcus stepped back.

“You erased part of my life.””

Evelyn started crying.

“I was trying to give you peace.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“You gave me a story that wasn’t true.””

I watched him.

The man who always protected everyone else was finally allowing himself to be hurt.

And I hated that it took this much pain for him to see what I had felt for years.

That love without honesty could still damage someone.

Daniel looked at me.

“Nia, there is something about the prenatal results.””

Marcus looked up.

“What?””

Daniel hesitated.

“The reason Evelyn requested them wasn’t because she thought you cheated.””

Everyone looked at him.

“Then why?””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“Because she suspected the child was connected to Claire.””

My stomach dropped.

Marcus immediately turned.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel frowned.

“You do.””

“No.””

“You saw the records.””

Evelyn looked terrified.

“I saw a name.””

“What name?””

Nobody answered.

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“What name?””

Evelyn looked at me.

And then she said:

“The name of the person who ordered the original test.””

Marcus frowned.

“What original test?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“The one taken before you and Nia ever knew there was a problem.””

I felt cold.

“Before we knew?””

Marcus grabbed her arm.

“Mom.””

She looked at him.

“I need you to understand something.””

“What?””

Her voice broke.

“I wasn’t trying to find out if the baby was yours.””

A pause.

“I was trying to find out if the baby belonged to someone else.””

Marcus let go of her.

The sentence was impossible.

“Someone else?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“That’s why I came.””

He pulled out another document.

“This was delivered to me yesterday.””

Marcus took it.

The paper was folded.

Inside was a photograph.

A baby.

My breath stopped.

Because I recognized the blanket.

The hospital bracelet.

The date.

My hands started shaking.

“No.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Nia?””

I couldn’t look away.

The picture wasn’t of my daughter.

It was older.

Years older.

But the details were impossible to ignore.

The same hospital.

The same medical logo.

The same pattern on the blanket.

Daniel watched my reaction.

“You’ve seen this before.””

I whispered:

“No.””

But my voice betrayed me.

Because somewhere deep inside, I had.

A memory.

A conversation.

A piece of my own past I had buried.

Marcus looked between us.

“Nia?””

I swallowed.

“I don’t understand.””

Evelyn stepped closer.

And for once, her voice wasn’t cruel.

It was afraid.

“That’s what I was trying to find out.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Find out what?””

Evelyn stared at me.

Then at my belly.

Then at the photograph.

“Whether your daughter is connected to a secret that started before you were even born.””

The world went silent.

And then my phone rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

I almost didn’t answer.

But something told me I needed to.

I pressed the button.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice whispered:

“Nia?””

My blood turned cold.

Because I knew that voice.

Not from meeting her.

From hearing it in my childhood.

The woman continued:

“I’ve been trying to reach you for years.””

I couldn’t speak.

Marcus watched my face.

“Nia, who is it?””

The woman on the phone took a shaky breath.

May you like

Then said:

“I’m Claire.””
