Chapter 9: The Truth Beneath My Name
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
The sentence stayed between us.
*The DNA results were never about finding out who the father was. They were about finding out who you really are.*
I looked at Evelyn.
The woman who had embarrassed me.
The woman who had controlled every detail of my pregnancy.
The woman who had spent years making me feel like I was never quite enough for her son.
And now she was telling me that she had been protecting a secret about my own identity.
My first instinct was anger.
My second was fear.
Because deep down, I knew something.
People did not hide ordinary things for decades.
They hid things that could destroy lives.
“Open it,” I whispered.
Marcus looked at me.
“Nia.””
“No more waiting.””
My voice shook, but I didn’t stop.
“No more deciding what I can handle. No more people protecting me from my own life.””
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
For the first time since I met her, she looked small.
Not powerful.
Not intimidating.
Just a woman carrying the weight of something she had buried for too long.
Marcus picked up the sealed prenatal DNA envelope again.
His hands were steady now.
But mine weren’t.
He opened it carefully.
The paper unfolded.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
I watched his face.
“What does it say?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
“Marcus?””
He looked at me.
“This test wasn’t ordered by you.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
He turned the page.
“The request came from someone else.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Who?””
Marcus looked at her.
“Your mother.””
The garden became silent.
I stared at Evelyn.
“You ordered the test?””
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt more than I expected.
“Why?””
She looked at my stomach.
“Because I needed to know if my fears were true.””
“What fears?””
She took a breath.
“The first time I saw you, I knew your face.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Not because I had met you before.””
She looked at the old photograph Daniel had brought.
“Because you looked like someone I knew.””
My fingers tightened.
“Who?””
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“Your grandmother.””
I froze.
“My grandmother?””
“My mother.””
The words made no sense.
Marcus looked between us.
“Mom, what are you saying?””
Evelyn’s voice became quiet.
“I’m saying Nia’s family and ours were connected long before she ever met you.””
Daniel nodded.
“That’s why I came.””
He pulled another document from his envelope.
“This is the original agreement.””
Marcus frowned.
“Agreement?””
Daniel handed it over.
Marcus read silently.
His expression changed.
“What is this?””
Evelyn answered.
“A guardianship document.””
I felt my stomach twist.
“Guardianship?””
She looked at me.
“Your mother signed it.””
My breathing stopped.
“My mother?””
Evelyn nodded.
“She was young. She was scared. She believed she was protecting you.””
“Protecting me from what?””
Nobody answered.
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because I was exhausted.
“Everyone keeps saying they protected me.””
I looked around at the people who had spent years holding pieces of my story.
“But nobody ever asked if I wanted to be protected.””
Marcus moved beside me.
“Nia.””
I looked at him.
His eyes were full of pain.
“I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“You didn’t know.””
“But I should have.””
“No.””
I touched his hand.
“You are the only person here who didn’t know.””
That hurt him.
Because it was true.
Daniel looked at the document.
“The agreement was created after a tragedy.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Claire’s mother died.””
Marcus looked up.
“Wait.””
He pointed at the paper.
“This is about Claire?””
Evelyn swallowed.
“And Nia.””
I felt the world shift.
“How?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“Because Claire wasn’t just connected to Marcus.””
She paused.
“She was connected to you.””
The sentence made my blood run cold.
I looked at Daniel.
“Explain.””
Daniel took a breath.
“Your mother and Claire’s mother were sisters.””
I stared.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“It’s the truth.””
I shook my head.
“My mother never told me.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
Evelyn answered.
“Because your mother believed the truth would put you in danger.””
I almost laughed.
“Danger from who?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Marcus looked down at the papers.
His eyes narrowed.
“Wait.””
He turned the page.
“There’s another name here.””
My heart raced.
“What name?””
He looked at me.
“The legal guardian listed after your mother.””
My mouth went dry.
“Who?””
Marcus slowly said:
“Evelyn Carter.””
I stepped back.
The air disappeared from my lungs.
“You?””
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The woman I thought had always hated me.
The woman who had made me feel unwanted.
Had been legally responsible for me.
“You knew me?””
She nodded.
“When you were a baby.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Yes, Nia.””
Her voice broke.
“I held you.””
The garden disappeared.
All I could hear was my own heartbeat.
“Then why?””
The question came out as a whisper.
“Why did you treat me like I was a stranger?””
Evelyn looked away.
“Because your mother asked me to.””
“Why?””
“Because if anyone knew who you were…”
She stopped.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who is she?””
Evelyn looked at him.
Then at me.
And finally said:
“She is the missing daughter of a family that everyone thought was gone.””
A phone buzzed.
Everyone turned.
It was Daniel’s phone.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Who is it?””
Daniel slowly lifted his eyes.
“It’s your father.””
Marcus froze.
After years of silence.
After years of believing his father had abandoned him.
The screen displayed one message.
*I know you found the documents. There is one more thing Nia needs to know before you read the final report.*
I felt my hand move to my stomach.
The baby kicked.
And I knew.
May you like
Whatever was left hidden…
Was about to come out.
