Chapter 5: The Name I Never Knew
“Nia,” Evelyn whispered, “you need to know about Claire.””
The name hung in the air.
Claire.
I waited for something inside me to recognize it.
A memory.
A conversation.
A warning.
Anything.
But there was nothing.
I looked at Marcus.
His face had changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You know that name,” I said.
Marcus didn’t answer.
That hurt more than if he had yelled.
Because I had spent years building a life with this man. I knew the sound of his laugh from another room. I knew how he took his coffee when he was stressed. I knew the tiny scar above his eyebrow from when he fell off his bike as a child.
But standing there, surrounded by pink decorations and unopened secrets, I realized there was a part of him I had never reached.
A part everyone else seemed to know.
“Marcus,” I said softly.
“Who is Claire?””
His eyes moved away from mine.
“I haven’t heard that name in a long time.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“You weren’t supposed to hear it again.””
Marcus turned sharply.
“Why?””
No one answered.
The guests slowly began leaving.
Not because they weren’t curious.
Because some family secrets felt too heavy to witness.
The beautiful baby shower became an abandoned celebration.
Half-eaten cake sat on tables.
Pink balloons moved gently in the breeze.
My daughter’s name cards remained untouched.
And in the middle of it all, we stood there trying to understand how we got here.
Daniel stepped forward.
“I think it’s time you know everything.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Don’t.””
Daniel ignored her.
“Claire was the reason your mother and I stopped speaking.””
Marcus stared at him.
“My mother and you?””
Evelyn’s voice became sharp.
“That was decades ago.””
“Exactly,” Daniel replied.
“Decades of silence.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Nia, I swear I didn’t know this was connected.””
I believed him.
But that didn’t make it easier.
“What is connected?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Claire was someone from my childhood.””
Evelyn interrupted.
“She was a mistake.””
The word made everyone stop.
A mistake.
Not a person.
Not a woman.
Not someone who mattered.
Just a mistake.
Marcus looked at his mother.
“Who was she?””
Evelyn hesitated.
Then said:
“Your father’s daughter.””
The world seemed to tilt.
I stared at her.
“Your father had another child?””
Marcus looked like he couldn’t process the words.
“My father?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
The wind moved through the garden.
A balloon string brushed against my arm.
I barely noticed.
Marcus laughed quietly.
A broken sound.
“So everyone knew except me?””
“No,” Evelyn said quickly.
But her reaction was too fast.
Marcus noticed.
“Who knew?””
Silence.
That was becoming the family’s favorite answer.
I stepped closer.
“Evelyn, why did you get my prenatal results?””
Her eyes moved toward me.
For the first time, she looked less like someone attacking me.
She looked like someone cornered.
“Because I needed to know.””
“Know what?””
She looked at my stomach.
And my skin turned cold.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“I needed to know if history was repeating itself.””
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at him.
“It means your mother has been afraid of something for a long time.””
I looked at Marcus.
“Is there something about your family I don’t know?””
He didn’t answer.
And that silence hurt.
Because silence was a choice.
I touched my belly.
My daughter kicked again.
A reminder that this wasn’t only about the past.
This was about the child we were bringing into the world.
“Open the envelope,” I said.
Marcus looked at me.
“Nia…”
“No more secrets.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Please.””
I looked at her.
“Please what?””
Her eyes filled.
“Please don’t make him read that here.””
Marcus looked at the envelope.
Then at his mother.
Then at me.
Slowly, he broke the seal.
The sound was small.
But everyone heard it.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Daniel looked away.
Marcus pulled out the first page.
His eyes scanned the paper.
Then stopped.
I watched every emotion cross his face.
Confusion.
Shock.
Fear.
And then something I couldn’t name.
He looked at me.
Not at my stomach.
At me.
“Nia…”
My heart dropped.
“What?””
He couldn’t speak.
The paper trembled in his hand.
“What does it say?””
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
And his voice changed.
“Why did you know this before me?””
Evelyn started crying.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Marcus stepped back.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You were trying to control the outcome.””
The paper slipped slightly.
I reached for his hand.
“Marcus.””
He looked at me.
And whispered:
“The results don’t make sense.””
My blood ran cold.
“What do you mean?””
Before he could answer, Daniel stepped forward.
“Because there’s another test.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What?””
May you like
Daniel pulled out his envelope.
“The one your mother never wanted you to see.””
