Chapter 3: The Agreement Nobody Mentioned
Aaliyah stared at her mother.
“You signed what?””
Denise opened her mouth, but the answer seemed to get trapped somewhere between her chest and her throat.
Outside the glass doors, Robert checked his watch. He looked toward the reception hall again, then began typing another message.
Aaliyah's phone vibrated.
*Robert: Your mother knows what we agreed to. Don't let Marcus manipulate you.*
Aaliyah held the phone so tightly that the corners pressed into her palm.
“What agreement?”” she demanded.
Denise shook her head.
“Not here.””
“Then where? In the dressing room? In the bathroom? After I marry a man whose family apparently knows more about my childhood than I do?””
“Aaliyah, please.””
“No. You don't get to tell me to be quiet anymore.””
Her voice trembled, but she didn't look away.
Marcus stood a few steps behind them. He hadn't approached the envelope, and he hadn't tried to take the phone from her.
He simply watched, his hands resting at his sides.
That calmness frightened Aaliyah.
She was used to Marcus being steady. But this was different. He looked like a man who had spent years preparing himself for a moment he hoped would never arrive.
She turned to him.
“Did you know Mom signed something?””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
The admission seemed to knock the air from her lungs.
“And you never told me?””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because I promised I wouldn't reveal something that wasn't mine to reveal.””
Aaliyah laughed bitterly.
“Everybody has a promise. Everybody has a reason. Apparently, I'm the only person in this family who doesn't deserve the truth.””
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“That isn't fair.””
“Neither is finding out that my mother made some secret agreement about my life!””
Denise stepped forward.
“It wasn't about your life.””
“Then what was it about?””
Denise looked at the sealed envelope.
Marcus followed her gaze.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Finally, Marcus said, “Aaliyah, bring the envelope over here.””
She hesitated.
“Why?””
“Because I want you to hear what I have to say before Robert comes inside.””
“Are you going to tell me what's in it?””
“No. You're going to decide whether you want to find out.””
Aaliyah looked down at the cream-colored paper.
The envelope was thicker than a stack of wedding invitations. Its sealed flap had been pressed firmly into place, and a small crease ran along the lower edge.
She carried it to the table and placed it beside the planning notebook.
Marcus pulled out a chair but didn't sit.
“When I met your mother, you were six years old,” he began.
“You were wearing yellow shoes, and you wouldn't let me hold your hand because you said you could walk by yourself.””
Aaliyah blinked.
She remembered the yellow shoes.
She remembered a man crouching in front of her at a family picnic, offering her a juice box and asking whether she wanted to see a magic trick.
She hadn't known that man would become her stepfather.
Marcus continued.
“You didn't need me to be your father. You already had one. You needed somebody to show up when he didn't.””
Aaliyah's throat tightened.
“So I showed up,” he said.
“I took you to school. I sat beside your bed when you were sick. I learned how to braid your hair badly enough that you made me practice on a doll.””
Despite herself, Aaliyah let out a small, broken laugh.
“You pulled the doll's hair out.””
“I did.””
“You blamed the brush.””
“It was a terrible brush.””
For one fleeting moment, the three of them almost looked like a family again.
Then Marcus placed his hand on the table.
“But I never believed loving you gave me ownership over your story.””
His eyes met hers.
“That's why I didn't tell you what Robert did. I wanted you to have the chance to know him for yourself.””
Aaliyah's anger faltered.
“Then why the envelope?””
“Because he contacted me before he contacted you.””
Her face went still.
“When?””
“Several months ago.””
Denise closed her eyes.
Aaliyah turned toward her.
“You knew about that too?””
Denise whispered, “Yes.””
Marcus continued.
“Robert wanted money. He said he was going through a difficult time. He claimed he wanted to make things right with you, but every conversation came back to the same subject.””
“What money?”” Aaliyah asked.
Marcus didn't answer directly.
Instead, he pulled the planning notebook closer and opened it to the page showing the wedding budget.
Beside the venue deposit, Aaliyah had written a note in the margin.
*Paid in full — M.*
She had assumed the money came from Marcus's savings.
He touched the note with one finger.
“Do you remember when you got accepted into college?””
Aaliyah nodded slowly.
“You wanted to go to the school three states away. Your mother was worried about the cost. I told you not to turn down your dream because of money.””
“You said you had it covered.””
“I did.””
“And my student loans?””
Marcus looked at her.
“You had fewer than you think.””
Aaliyah stared at him.
“Marcus, what are you saying?””
“I'm saying that some of the money in that envelope is connected to choices I made long before you knew there were choices to make.””
Denise suddenly gripped the back of a chair.
“Marcus, don't do this.””
He looked at her.
“I'm not doing anything. The time for hiding it is over.””
“You promised!””
“I promised not to tell her your secret for you. I never promised to lie forever.””
Denise's face crumpled.
Aaliyah moved between them.
“Stop. Both of you.””
She picked up the envelope.
“I'm opening it.””
Marcus nodded.
“That's your decision.””
Denise reached toward her, then stopped herself.
“Baby, please. Once you know, you can't unknow it.””
Aaliyah looked at her mother, stunned by the desperation in her voice.
“What could possibly be so terrible?””
Denise's lips trembled.
“Because the money wasn't supposed to be yours.””
Silence fell over the table.
Aaliyah slowly lowered the envelope.
Outside, Robert approached the glass doors. He straightened his navy tie, adjusted his jacket, and walked inside without waiting for an invitation.
The wedding coordinator hurried toward him.
“Sir, the ceremony area is being prepared. Are you a guest?””
Robert ignored the question.
His eyes found Aaliyah immediately.
“There she is,” he said, spreading his arms.
“My beautiful daughter.””
Aaliyah didn't move.
Robert approached the table and kissed the air beside her cheek.
“You look just like your grandmother.””
“Why are you here?”” Aaliyah asked.
His smile weakened.
“I'm here for my daughter. I thought that much was obvious.””
“You texted me about an agreement.””
Robert glanced at Denise.
Then he looked at Marcus.
His expression hardened.
“Did he give you the envelope?””
“Yes.””
“Then you know he has something that belongs to me.””
Marcus remained still.
“Do I?””
Robert pulled out the chair opposite Aaliyah and sat down without being invited.
“Let's not turn this into a scene,” he said.
“I want to walk my daughter down the aisle. I think that's reasonable.””
“You disappeared,” Aaliyah replied.
“I made mistakes.””
“You missed birthdays.””
“I was struggling.””
“You missed graduations.””
“I wasn't in a position to be there.””
“You missed the day I got engaged.””
Robert spread his hands.
“And I'm here now.””
Aaliyah stared at him.
He had an answer for everything, but none of his answers contained an apology that felt like it belonged to her.
Marcus moved toward the far side of the table.
Robert noticed.
“Where are you going?””
“To give my daughter room to decide.””
Robert scoffed.
“After everything I've been through, you're still trying to make me look like the villain.””
Marcus turned back.
“No, Robert. I'm letting you speak for yourself.””
Robert's jaw tightened.
He looked at Aaliyah and lowered his voice.
“Listen. Your mother and I made an agreement years ago. Marcus got involved, and now he's trying to use it against me.””
Aaliyah's fingers tightened around the envelope.
“What agreement?””
Robert leaned forward.
“Ask your mother who was supposed to receive the money.””
Denise began to cry.
Marcus closed his eyes briefly.
And then Robert said the one thing that made Aaliyah stop breathing.
“Your mother and I agreed that when you turned eighteen, the money your father left you would be transferred to you.””
Aaliyah looked at Denise.
“My father?””
Robert nodded.
“Your biological father. The man whose name was on the original paperwork.””
She stared at him, confused.
“But you're my biological father.””
Robert's confidence faltered.
For the first time since he entered the hall, he looked genuinely uncomfortable.
Denise covered her mouth.
Marcus stood motionless.
Then Robert reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded document.
He placed it beside the sealed envelope.
At the top of the page was a name Aaliyah had never seen before.
Beneath it was a date from twenty years earlier.
And beside the signature line was her mother's name.
Aaliyah looked up slowly.
“Mom,” she whispered, “if Robert is my father, then whose name is on this document?””
Denise stared at the paper, tears streaming down her face.
Then she looked at Marcus.

And Marcus finally answered the question none of them had wanted Aaliyah to ask.
“Your biological father wasn't Robert.””
