Chapter 9: The Thief Was Someone She Loved

Aaliyah stared at the recorder.

The reception hall behind her was bright with daylight, white flowers, and carefully arranged tables. Somewhere inside, a string quartet had begun rehearsing the processional music.

The wedding was still happening.

But the life she thought she understood was gone.

She looked at Andre.

“Play it again.””

He pressed the button.

The same static crackled through the speaker. Darius's voice returned, slightly muffled but unmistakably human.

“If anything happens to me, Marcus must protect my daughter from the truth about her uncle.””

Aaliyah held her breath.

“And if Marcus fails, then Robert will make sure she never discovers what really happened to the money.””

A pause followed.

Then Darius spoke again.

“Because the person who stole from my daughter wasn't Robert.””

The recording stopped.

Aaliyah lowered her head.

“Who was it?””

Andre looked toward Marcus.

Marcus stood just inside the glass doors, his face pale.

“I don't know,” Andre said.

Aaliyah stared at him.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I know how it sounds.””

“You told me you found the recording. You came here saying you wanted to give me the truth. Now you're telling me you don't know who my father was accusing?””

Andre rubbed his forehead.

“I've listened to that recording dozens of times. I believe Darius was talking about me.””

“Were you the thief?””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Aaliyah took a step back.

“Then why did he suspect you?””

Andre looked at the ground.

“Because I handled some of his financial paperwork. I helped him establish the original account. I had access to information that Robert didn't have at first.””

“And you wanted control of the money.””

“I wanted control of the account because I believed I could protect it.””

“Did you move any of the money?””

Andre swallowed.

“Yes.””

Aaliyah's stomach tightened.

“How much?””

“Not the way you're thinking.””

“Stop telling me what I'm thinking!””

Andre flinched.

She pressed a hand against her chest.

“Every person I've spoken to today has an explanation. Everyone had a reason. Everyone claims they were trying to protect me. Meanwhile, my father died, my money disappeared, and I grew up not knowing who I was.””

Andre's eyes filled with tears.

“You're right.””

The admission surprised her.

He continued.

“I made decisions without asking your mother. I transferred money into an account I controlled because I thought Robert was going to take it. I told myself I would move it back once the legal dispute was settled.””

“Did you?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because I lost access to the account after my business partner filed a lawsuit against me. I spent years trying to recover the money. By the time I could, I was afraid to come forward.””

Aaliyah stared at him.

“So you stole from me too.””

Andre bowed his head.

“Yes.””

The word hung in the air.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Aaliyah turned toward him.

“You knew?””

“I suspected Andre had taken some of the funds,” Marcus said.

“I didn't know the full extent until I obtained the financial records.””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

“Because the money was eventually recovered through the legal process, and I believed the matter had been resolved.””

“But the recording wasn't resolved. My father's death wasn't resolved. My entire identity wasn't resolved!””

Marcus stepped closer.

“I know.””

“No, you don't.””

Her voice broke.

“You got to know him. You got to hear him speak. You got to make a promise to him. You had something of my father that I never had, and you decided I wasn't ready to know.””

Marcus's eyes filled with tears.

“You're right.””

She stared at him.

He wasn't defending himself.

He wasn't telling her to calm down.

He was accepting the hurt she had every right to feel.

That made it harder to stay angry.

Andre opened his jacket and removed a thin folder.

“This is the original agreement,” he said.

“It explains what Darius wanted, what Robert agreed to, and what I did afterward.””

Aaliyah took it.

Inside was a document bearing Darius's signature, dated three days before his death. It established a protected account for her and named Marcus as the person authorized to oversee its administration if her mother became unable to do so.

But there was another page.

Aaliyah read it twice.

The document required that any transfer of funds above a specified amount receive written approval from two people.

Denise Bennett.

And Andre Bennett.

Aaliyah looked up.

“Mom signed this?””

Andre nodded.

“She agreed to the arrangement.””

“Then Robert couldn't have moved the money without her approval.””

Andre lowered his eyes.

“That's correct.””

Aaliyah felt a terrible coldness spread through her chest.

She turned toward the hall.

Denise stood near the planning table, watching them through the glass.

Aaliyah walked back inside.

“Mom.””

Denise approached slowly.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

Aaliyah placed the document on the table.

“Your signature is on the account authorization.””

Denise looked at the page.

Her face crumpled.

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

Denise sat down.

“When Darius died, I was frightened. Robert kept telling me that if we lost the house, I would lose you. He said he could protect us if I gave him temporary access to the money.””

“But you knew the money belonged to me.””

“Yes.””

“You signed the authorization anyway.””

Denise nodded, tears streaming down her cheeks.

“I thought I could replace it before you ever found out.””

Aaliyah gripped the back of the chair.

“You and Robert used my money to save your house?””

“Some of it went toward the house. Some went toward debts. Some went toward expenses I couldn't pay.””

“And you never told me.””

“I was ashamed.””

Aaliyah shook her head.

“You were afraid I'd hate you.””

“Yes.””

“So you let me believe Robert was my father. You let me believe Marcus was the only person who knew my history. You let me spend my life thinking the people around me had protected me, when the truth is that you all made choices with my life and money without asking me.””

Denise sobbed.

“I know.””

Aaliyah looked at the woman who had given birth to her.

She remembered childhood mornings in the kitchen, Denise singing along to the radio while making pancakes. She remembered being comforted after her first heartbreak and having her hair brushed before school.

Those memories were real.

So was the betrayal.

“Did you ever think about telling me?”” Aaliyah asked.

“Every year.””

“Then why didn't you?””

Denise stared at her hands.

“Because every year, it became harder.””

Aaliyah turned away.

Across the hall, the wedding coordinator appeared in the doorway.

“I'm sorry,” she said softly.

“The ceremony is scheduled to begin in thirty minutes. Would you like us to delay it?””

Aaliyah looked at the white flowers, the tiered cake, and the chairs arranged in perfect rows.

She had dreamed of this day for years.

She had imagined walking down the aisle with the man she believed was her father, surrounded by a family that understood her.

Now she wasn't sure who would be standing beside her.

“Give me a few minutes,” she said.

The coordinator nodded and left.

Marcus approached cautiously.

“You don't have to decide anything right now.””

Aaliyah looked at him.

“I know.””

“You can postpone the ceremony.””

“I know.””

“You can ask everyone to leave.””

“I know, Marcus!””

Her voice cracked, and she immediately covered her mouth.

Marcus stopped.

Aaliyah wiped her tears.

“I'm sorry.””

“You don't have to apologize.””

She looked down at the letter from Darius.

There was one paragraph she still hadn't finished reading.

She unfolded it again.

The words were faded, but clear enough.

If you ever discover that the people who loved you made mistakes, remember this: love does not erase the harm people cause. But the harm they cause does not automatically erase every moment they truly loved you.

Aaliyah read the sentence again.

Then she reached the final line.

And if Marcus is still beside you when you read this, ask him what I told him to do if he ever had to choose between keeping his promise to me and telling you the truth.

She looked up.

“Marcus?””

He came closer.

“What did my father tell you?””

Marcus's face tightened.

“He told me that if the truth ever threatened to destroy the family, I should tell you anyway.””

Aaliyah stared at him.

“Then why didn't you?””

Marcus's voice trembled.

“Because I was afraid that if I told you everything, you would look at me the way you're looking at me now.””

For a moment, she couldn't speak.

Then she took his hand.

It was the first time she had touched him since the argument began.

“I don't know what happens after today,” she whispered.

“I don't know if I can forgive Mom. I don't know if I ever want to see Robert again. And I don't know what to do with Andre.””

Marcus squeezed her fingers gently.

“You don't have to figure it out today.””

Aaliyah looked toward the wedding arch.

“But I do have to decide one thing.””

She drew a shaky breath.

“Who walks me down the aisle?””

Before Marcus could answer, the glass doors opened.

Her fiancé, Daniel, stepped inside in his black tuxedo, his face full of concern.

He looked at Aaliyah, then at the documents spread across the table.

“Baby,” he said softly, “your maid of honor told me something happened.””

Aaliyah nodded.

“Something did.””

Daniel approached and took her free hand.

“Whatever it is, you don't have to pretend you're okay.””

She looked at him, and for the first time that day, she felt she could breathe.

Then Daniel glanced at the letter.

“Is that from your father?””

Aaliyah nodded.

Daniel read the name at the top.

“Darius Bennett.””

He looked up.

“Wait. Is this the same Darius Bennett who founded Bennett Community Electrical?””

Andre's head snapped toward him.

“Yes,” Andre said.

“Why?””

Daniel reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.

“Because my company has been reviewing the records for a charitable foundation bearing that name. We found an account that was never claimed.””

Aaliyah's heart began to pound.

“What account?””

Daniel turned the screen toward them.

It showed a scanned document, a date, and a balance history.

At the bottom was a note:

*BENEFICIARY: AALIYAH BENNETT. ACCOUNT STATUS: ACTIVE.*

Aaliyah stared at the screen.

“How much is in it?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know yet. But there's something else.””

He enlarged the document.

The account had been established after the original agreement, using a separate source of funds.

And the last authorized transaction had been made only six months earlier.
