Chapter 4: The Man Whose Name She Never Knew
For several seconds, Aaliyah couldn't hear anything.
The wedding coordinator was speaking near the entrance. Someone laughed in the corridor. A chair scraped against the polished floor.
But all Aaliyah could hear was Marcus's voice.
Your biological father wasn't Robert.
She looked at the man who had raised her, searching his face for some sign that he was taking back his words.
He didn't.
“Say that again,” Aaliyah whispered.
Marcus pulled out a chair and sat down slowly.
“Your biological father wasn't Robert.””
Aaliyah turned toward Denise.
“Tell me he's lying.””
Denise pressed a trembling hand against her mouth.
“Baby—”
“Don't call me baby right now!”” Aaliyah shouted.
“I need you to answer me!””
Robert stood abruptly, knocking his chair backward.
“This is exactly what I've been talking about. Marcus has spent years poisoning you against me.””
Marcus didn't even look at him.
“You should sit down, Robert.””
“Don't tell me what to do.””
“Then stop behaving like a man who's afraid of a piece of paper.””
Robert's face reddened.
He grabbed the folded document from the table, but Aaliyah caught his wrist.
“Put it down.””
He stared at her.
For the first time since entering the hall, Robert seemed to realize that she wasn't the little girl he had imagined finding.
She was a grown woman in a wedding dress, and she was no longer willing to let anyone dictate what she was allowed to know.
Slowly, Robert released the document.
Aaliyah unfolded it.
The paper was yellowed at the edges. Several lines had been typed on a form bearing the name of a county family court. The date was twenty years earlier, when Aaliyah had been six years old.
She read the names.
Denise's.
Robert's.
And another name written in the space marked BIOLOGICAL FATHER.
*Darius Bennett.*
Aaliyah looked up.
“Who is Darius Bennett?””
Denise began to cry harder.
Robert rubbed his forehead.
“He was a man your mother knew before me.””
“Before you?””
“Yes.””
“You're telling me my mother had a child with another man, and you raised me as your own?””
Robert's expression twisted.
“Don't make it sound noble. I was married to your mother. I believed you were mine until the truth came out.””
Aaliyah turned toward Denise.
“Is that true?””
Denise nodded, unable to speak.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“I was going to.””
“When? At thirty? Forty? Was I supposed to find out when I needed a family medical history?””
Denise covered her face.
“I was afraid you'd hate me.””
Aaliyah stared at her mother.
“You let me grow up believing Robert was my father because you were afraid I'd hate you?””
“I made mistakes.””
“You made my entire life a lie!””
The words rang through the reception hall.
Marcus lowered his head.
He had heard the truth before, but hearing Aaliyah discover it was a different kind of pain.
He remembered the day Denise had come to him with the paperwork, her eyes swollen from crying, her marriage to Robert already falling apart. He remembered promising to protect the child who had nothing to do with the choices adults had made.
He had kept that promise.
Perhaps too well.
Aaliyah looked back at the document.
“What happened to Darius?””
Denise wiped her cheeks.
“He died.””
“When?””
“Before you turned seven.””
“Was he sick?””
“No.””
Denise's voice broke.
“He was killed in a car accident.””
Aaliyah gripped the edge of the table.
A stranger had died, and somewhere in the world there had been a man who shared her blood, her smile, perhaps even the way she tilted her head when she was confused.
She had never known his name.
“Did he know about me?””
Denise nodded.
“Yes.””
“Did he want me?””
“Yes, sweetheart. He loved you.””
Aaliyah stepped backward.
“Then why wasn't he here?””
Denise looked toward Marcus.
He remained silent.
Robert answered instead.
“Because your mother and I were married, and she didn't want him interfering in our family.””
Denise snapped her head up.
“That is not what happened!””
“Isn't it?”” Robert demanded.
“You told him to stay away.””
“I told you both to stop fighting over a child!””
“And then he died,” Robert said coldly.
“So let's not pretend any of this was my fault.””
Aaliyah recoiled at the casual cruelty of his words.
Marcus rose from his chair.
“That's enough.””
Robert pointed at him.
“You don't get to stand there like some hero. You knew about Darius. You knew about the money. And you kept everything from her.””
Marcus's face remained composed, but his voice hardened.
“I knew what a six-year-old child needed. She needed a home, stability, and people who would show up. I gave her those things.””
“You also took my place.””
“No,” Marcus replied.
“You abandoned it.””
Robert opened his mouth, but nothing came out.
Aaliyah looked down at the old document again.
“Why is your name on this agreement?”” she asked Robert.
He straightened his jacket.
“Because I was your legal father at the time. Darius wanted to make sure you would be financially protected.””
“What money?””
Robert glanced at the sealed envelope.
“Money from a settlement connected to Darius's estate. There was a life insurance policy, an investment account, and compensation related to his accident.””
Aaliyah felt dizzy.
“How much?””
Robert hesitated.
“I don't know the exact amount anymore.””
Marcus let out a quiet, humorless breath.
“Of course you don't.””
Robert ignored him.
“Your mother and I agreed that the funds would be managed until you became an adult. It was complicated. We were going through a divorce, and there were legal issues.””
Aaliyah stared at Denise.
“Did I receive it when I turned eighteen?””
Denise's silence answered before her words did.
“No.””
Aaliyah's fingers went numb.
“Did I receive any of it?””
Denise shook her head.
“I'm sorry.””
Aaliyah looked at Robert.
“And you came here today because you suddenly remembered you have a daughter?””
“I came because I want to repair our relationship.””
“Then why are you talking about money?””
Robert's face tightened.
“Because I deserve to know what happened to it.””
Marcus reached into his jacket and removed a second folded sheet.
“That's interesting,” he said.
“Because you've already been told what happened to the money.””
Robert's eyes fixed on the paper.
For the first time, genuine fear crossed his face.
“Where did you get that?””
“From the same place I got everything else.””
Robert stepped toward him.
“Give it to me.””
“No.””
“You have no right to keep my records!””
Marcus looked him directly in the eye.
“They aren't your records.””
Aaliyah stared at the two men.
“What are you talking about?””
Marcus placed the folded sheet beside the original agreement.
“I'm talking about the document that explains why I kept the envelope.””
Robert lunged for it.
Marcus moved the paper out of reach.
Denise cried out, “Robert, don't!””
But Robert had already knocked the silver pen onto the floor.
“After everything I did to protect this family,” he shouted, “you have no right to expose me!””
Aaliyah went completely still.
“Protect us from what?””
Robert looked at her.
His breathing became shallow.
Then he made a mistake.
He turned toward Denise and said, “You told me he destroyed those records!””
The entire hall seemed to fall silent.
Aaliyah slowly looked at her mother.
“Which records?””
Denise couldn't answer.
Marcus unfolded the second sheet.
And at the bottom of the page, beside a date from twenty years earlier, was a handwritten note that made Aaliyah's blood run cold.
