Chapter 8: The Night Everything Changed
Aaliyah sat perfectly still.
The letter lay open on the table, beside the cream-colored envelope and the handwritten card that had arrived from Andre Bennett.
Marcus stared at his hands.
“I was supposed to drive Darius home,” he repeated.
“He had been working late, and his car was in the shop. We agreed I would pick him up after dinner.””
“Then why didn't you?””
“Because Andre called.””
Aaliyah swallowed.
“What did he want?””
“He said he needed help. He claimed he'd been in an argument with someone over the business and was afraid things would get out of hand. He asked me to meet him.””
“So you left my father alone?””
Marcus looked at her.
“Yes.””
The word came out quietly.
Aaliyah pushed her chair backward.
“Was that the night he died?””
“Yes.””
She pressed her fingertips against her temples.
“How long were you with Andre?””
“About forty minutes.””
“And my father?””
“I called him when I realized I was running late. He told me not to worry. He said he'd find another way home.””
Aaliyah's eyes filled with tears.
“Did he sound angry?””
“No.””
“Did he ask you to come get him?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Yes.””
The admission broke something inside her.
“And you didn't go?””
“I was already on my way to Andre. I thought Darius would be safe taking a cab. I told myself I would see him the next morning.””
Aaliyah stood.
“Did you know he was going to die?””
Marcus looked horrified.
“No.””
“Then why have you been carrying this guilt for twenty years?””
“Because I wasn't there.””
Aaliyah stared at him.
“You couldn't have known what would happen.””
“I know that.””
“Then why do you look like you killed him?””
Marcus's eyes glistened.
“Because the last thing Darius said to me was, ‘Don't let Andre get his hands on anything that belongs to Aaliyah.’”
The words seemed to suck the air from the room.
Denise covered her mouth.
Aaliyah slowly turned toward her mother.
“You knew?””
Denise shook her head.
“Not all of it.””
“What does that mean?””
“I knew Marcus had been with Andre that evening. I knew he blamed himself for not picking Darius up. But I never knew what Darius had told him.””
Aaliyah looked back at Marcus.
“Did the police question you?””
“Yes.””
“Did you tell them about Andre?””
“I told them everything I knew.””
“And?””
“They investigated. They determined Darius's death was an accident. There was no evidence that Andre had anything to do with it.””
Aaliyah sank back into her chair.
She wanted someone to blame. Someone who could explain why her father had died, why she had grown up without knowing his name, and why the people who loved her had spent decades hiding pieces of the truth.
But Marcus wasn't giving her a villain.
He was giving her a memory.
A painful, ordinary decision made by a man who believed he had time.
Aaliyah wiped her cheeks.
“Why didn't you tell me this before?””
“Because I didn't want you to grow up believing your life began with a tragedy.””
“It did begin with a tragedy!””
Marcus flinched.
She immediately regretted shouting, but she couldn't stop the words.
“I didn't know him. I don't know what his voice sounded like when he was happy. I don't know what he would have said when I graduated or when I got engaged. I don't even know whether he would have liked my fiancé.””
Marcus reached for the letter.
“Darius would have loved him if he made you happy.””
Aaliyah looked at him.
“How can you know that?””
“Because Darius loved you more than anything.””
The certainty in Marcus's voice made her cry harder.
For a long moment, nobody spoke.
Then Aaliyah picked up Andre's card.
“I'm calling him.””
Marcus's head snapped up.
“Aaliyah, wait.””
“No. He contacted me for a reason.””
“We don't know what he wants.””
“Neither do I. That's why I'm calling.””
She pressed the number into her phone.
It rang twice.
A man's voice answered.
“Aaliyah?””
She stiffened.
“How do you know it's me?””
“I've been waiting for your call.””
“Who are you?””
“Your uncle.””
Aaliyah looked at Marcus.
“Then tell me something only my family would know.””
There was a pause.
“Your father called you Little Star. He used to carry you on his shoulders whenever you went to the park. You had a yellow blanket you refused to sleep without, even when it was too hot to use one.””
Aaliyah's breath caught.
Her mother had told her about the blanket.
Marcus had told her about the park.
But the nickname was new.
“What do you want from me?”” she asked.
“To tell you the truth.””
“Then tell me why you contacted Marcus a month ago.””
Andre sighed.
“Because I found something your father left behind.””
“What?””
“A recording.””
Aaliyah's grip tightened around the phone.
“A recording of what?””
“Darius speaking about the estate. About Robert. About the agreement your mother signed.””
Denise stepped closer.
“Ask him where he got it,” she whispered.
Aaliyah repeated the question.
Andre answered immediately.
“It was in a box of your father's personal belongings. I found it after my wife and I cleared out our storage unit.””
“Why did you wait so long to give it to us?””
“Because I was ashamed.””
Aaliyah stared at the table.
It was the first answer she'd heard all day that sounded honest.
“What does the recording say?””
Andre's voice grew quieter.
“It explains why Darius chose Marcus to protect you. It also explains why your father never trusted me with the money.””
Aaliyah closed her eyes.
“Can you send it to me?””
“I can, but I want you to hear it in person. There's something else you need to see.””
“What?””
“The original agreement. The one Robert signed before your father died.””
Marcus rose abruptly.
“Don't go, Aaliyah.””
She turned toward him.
“Why?””
“Because Andre has spent years blaming everyone else for his choices. He may be telling the truth about the recording, but that doesn't mean you should trust him.””
Aaliyah looked at the phone.
“Uncle Andre, are you asking me for money?””
“No.””
“Are you asking me to change my wedding plans?””
“No.””
“Then what do you want?””
“I want to give you something that should have belonged to you a long time ago.””
“What?””
Andre's answer was immediate.
“Your father's truth.””
Aaliyah looked at Marcus.
He appeared torn between fear and resignation.
She turned back to the phone.
“Where are you?””
“Outside the reception hall.””
Aaliyah froze.
“What?””
“I came when I heard Robert was there. I didn't want to interrupt your wedding, but I knew he'd try to get to the envelope before you understood what it meant.””
She looked toward the glass doors.
A man stood outside beneath the white floral arch.
He was older than Marcus, with silver hair, a dark suit, and a face that seemed to carry the weight of many sleepless nights.
He lifted one hand.
Aaliyah ended the call.
Then she walked toward the entrance.
Marcus followed but didn't try to stop her.
When she opened the doors, Andre stood motionless in the bright sunlight.
For several seconds, they simply looked at one another.
Then Andre reached into his jacket and removed a small black audio recorder.
“Before I play this,” he said, “you need to know that your father recorded it three days before he died.””
Aaliyah nodded.
Andre pressed the button.
Static filled the air.
Then a man's voice emerged from the tiny speaker.
Aaliyah had never heard it before.
But she knew, somehow, that it was Darius.
“If anything happens to me,” the recording said, “Marcus must protect my daughter from the truth about her uncle.””
Andre's hand began to tremble.
The recording continued.
“And if Marcus fails, then Robert will make sure she never discovers what really happened to the money.””
Aaliyah turned toward Marcus.
He looked devastated.
May you like
Then the recording ended with a sentence that made Andre drop his eyes.
“Because the person who stole from my daughter wasn't Robert.””
