Chapter 5: The Price of Being a Father

Aaliyah stared at Robert's signature.

The handwriting was unmistakable. It matched the name written across the envelope.

She looked up slowly.

“You signed this?””

Robert reached for the document.

“It's not what you think.””

“Then explain it.””

“It's an old financial record. These things are complicated.””

“Explain it!””

Robert glanced around the reception hall. Two members of the wedding staff had stopped arranging the flowers. One of them quietly walked away, while the other pretended not to listen.

Robert lowered his voice.

“Your mother and I were struggling financially. There were debts, legal fees, and expenses after the divorce. I made decisions to keep things from falling apart.””

“Using my money?””

“Using money that was part of a larger arrangement.””

Aaliyah shook her head.

“You said the money was supposed to be protected for me.””

“It was.””

“Then why does this say the account was closed?””

Robert's jaw tightened.

“Because the money was transferred.””

“To whom?””

He didn't answer.

Aaliyah looked at Marcus.

“Tell me.””

Marcus rested his hands on the back of a chair.

“I can't tell you what to believe, sweetheart. But I can tell you what the records say.””

He placed another page on the table.

“This is a copy of a bank transfer. It was made shortly after the agreement was signed. The money was moved into an account controlled by Robert.””

Robert slapped the paper with his palm.

“That transfer was authorized!””

“By whom?”” Marcus asked.

Robert looked at Denise.

She stared at the floor.

Aaliyah felt something inside her begin to crack.

“Mom?””

Denise slowly lifted her eyes.

“I signed the authorization.””

Aaliyah closed her eyes.

For a moment, she wished she could return to an hour earlier, when her biggest concern had been the seating chart and whether her wedding flowers would arrive on time.

She had been angry with Marcus because he wouldn't understand why she wanted Robert to walk her down the aisle.

Now she wondered whether she had ever known Robert at all.

“Why?”” she whispered.

Denise pulled out the chair beside her and sat down.

“When Darius died, I was overwhelmed. I was raising you, going through a divorce, trying to find somewhere affordable for us to live. Robert told me the money would be safer if it was moved temporarily.””

“Temporarily?””

“He said he had financial experience. He promised he would replace anything that was spent.””

“How much did he spend?””

“I don't know.””

Aaliyah looked at Robert.

He folded his arms.

“Your mother is leaving out important details.””

“Then tell me the details.””

Robert leaned closer.

“I had obligations. I was responsible for you at the time. Your mother signed the documents willingly.””

Denise suddenly stood.

“You told me it was for six months!””

“And I intended to replace it!””

“You used it to pay off your business debts!””

Robert's face darkened.

“Keep your voice down.””

“No!”” Denise shouted.

“You told me you would replace the money before Aaliyah turned eighteen. You promised me!””

Robert pointed at her.

“You signed those papers. Don't pretend you had nothing to do with it.””

Denise flinched.

Aaliyah watched them argue, feeling as though she had been dropped into the middle of a conversation that had been happening behind her back for two decades.

“Enough,” she said.

Neither parent heard her.

“You said the business was going to recover!”” Denise cried.

“You said the money would come back!””

Robert grabbed his jacket from the chair.

“And it would have if you hadn't walked away from me!””

Aaliyah struck the table with her hand.

“ENOUGH!””

Both of them fell silent.

She looked at Robert.

“Did you take the money that was meant for me?””

Robert stared at her for several seconds.

Then he sighed.

“Yes.””

The single word hurt more than all his excuses.

Aaliyah gripped the table.

“How much?””

“I don't remember the exact amount.””

“Stop saying that!””

“It's been twenty years!””

“And I'm the person who was supposed to receive it!””

Robert looked away.

“I intended to repay it.””

“Did you?””

He said nothing.

Aaliyah turned to Denise.

“Did he?””

Denise shook her head.

“No.””

Aaliyah stepped away from the table, her wedding dress whispering against the polished floor.

Marcus moved toward her, but she lifted one hand.

“Please. I need a minute.””

He stopped immediately.

That small act of respect nearly undid her.

Robert noticed her expression and quickly seized the opportunity.

“Aaliyah, sweetheart, I know this sounds terrible. But I was young. I was under pressure. I made mistakes, and I regret them.””

“You're not sorry you took it,” Aaliyah said.

“You're sorry I found out.””

“That's not fair.””

“You came to my wedding and demanded to walk me down the aisle.””

“Because you're my daughter!””

“You didn't even know what school I graduated from until I told you three weeks ago!””

Robert's mouth opened.

She continued.

“You asked me what kind of car my fiancé drives. You asked where we're going on our honeymoon. You asked whether Marcus was paying for everything.””

“I was trying to get to know you!””

“No. You were trying to find out what you could get.””

Robert's face turned hard.

“Be careful, young lady.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Don't speak to her like that.””

Robert rounded on him.

“This is your fault! You could have given me the money years ago and avoided all of this.””

Marcus looked almost amused.

“Why would I give you money that wasn't yours?””

“Because you owed me!””

Aaliyah froze.

Marcus's expression changed.

“Owed you what?””

Robert realized what he had said.

He tried to recover.

“For raising my daughter. For taking my place. You had no business stepping into my family.””

Marcus studied him for a long moment.

Then he reached into his jacket and removed a small, worn receipt.

“I think we should talk about what I owed you.””

Robert went pale.

Denise sank into her chair.

Aaliyah stared at the receipt.

“What is that?””

Marcus placed it beside the transfer record.

“An acknowledgment of payment. Signed by Robert twenty years ago.””

Robert shook his head.

“No.””

Marcus kept his voice calm.

“You came to my house after your business failed. You said you needed help. You said you wanted to make sure Aaliyah had a stable home.””

“I was desperate!””

“You asked me for money.””

“And you gave it to me!””

“Yes.””

Robert leaned forward, his voice rising.

“So you admit it! You paid me!””

Marcus nodded.

“I paid you. And you signed a document agreeing that you would make no further financial claims connected to Aaliyah's upbringing or the household I maintained for her.””

Aaliyah stared at Marcus.

“You paid Robert to stay away?””

“No,” Marcus replied gently.

“I paid him because he was threatening to take you away from the only home you knew, and he was willing to use a custody dispute to get what he wanted.””

Robert slammed his fist onto the table.

“That is a lie!””

Marcus didn't move.

“Then why did you sign the receipt?””

Robert stared at the paper.

For several seconds, the only sound was his uneven breathing.

Then he straightened, forcing a smile onto his face.

“Fine. You want the truth? I came here today because I have a right to be part of my daughter's wedding.””

Aaliyah shook her head.

“You said I was your daughter because of blood. Then you demanded money because of an agreement. Now you want a place in my wedding because you think you have a right.””

She took a deep breath.

“What do you actually want from me?””

Robert looked at her.

For the first time, his expression held something close to desperation.

“I want you to forgive me.””

“Why today?””

“Because you're getting married. Because I don't want to lose another chance.””

Aaliyah's eyes filled with tears.

“You already lost twenty years.””

Robert reached toward her hand.

She pulled away.

“Don't touch me.””

He stopped.

Then his face hardened again, and he leaned toward the envelope.

“If you open that, you'll understand why this is more complicated than you think.””

Marcus's expression sharpened.

“Robert, don't.””

Robert ignored him.

“Your stepfather has been keeping something from you, Aaliyah. Something about the money. Something about what he agreed to do in exchange for raising you.””

Aaliyah looked at Marcus.

He didn't deny it.

Her stomach twisted.

“What did you agree to?””

Marcus took a slow breath.

“Something I have never regretted.””

“That isn't an answer.””

“No,” he said.

“It isn't.””

Robert smiled faintly.

“Ask him who paid your college tuition. Ask him why the money came from an account with Darius's name on it.””

Aaliyah went cold.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Robert reached across the table and tapped the envelope.

“Go ahead, sweetheart. Open it.””

Aaliyah looked at the sealed flap.

Then she looked at Marcus, who had raised her, loved her, and apparently carried a secret of his own for twenty years.

May you like

She slid a fingernail beneath the seal.

And before she could tear it open, Marcus said quietly, “If you open that envelope, you'll finally understand why I never asked you to call me Dad.””
