Chapter 1: The Money Under The Bed

“Jordan! Get in here!””

My father’s voice did not sound like a question.

It sounded like the moment before a storm.

I was halfway down the hallway when I heard the sound of a zipper tearing open. My footsteps slowed. Something inside me already knew whatever was waiting in my bedroom would change everything.

I walked through the doorway and froze.

My father, Marcus Reed, stood beside my bed with my black duffel bag hanging from one hand.

The same bag I had hidden under the mattress.

The same bag I thought nobody would ever find.

Cash was everywhere.

Thick bundles of hundred-dollar bills covered my gray sheets like someone had dumped a bank vault onto my bed.

My father’s jaw tightened.

“Jordan,” he said quietly, “what am I looking at?””

I couldn’t answer.

Not because I didn’t know.

Because I knew exactly how bad it looked.

The bright afternoon sunlight coming through my window made everything feel unreal. My posters were still on the walls. My school books were still stacked on my desk. My old basketball shoes were still by the closet.

Everything looked normal.

Except for fifteen thousand dollars sitting in the middle of my room.

Marcus grabbed two bundles and stepped closer.

“Fifteen thousand dollars,” he said. His voice rose with every word.

“Where did you get this?””

I looked directly at him.

“I didn’t steal it.””

His eyes narrowed.

“That wasn’t my question.””

My father had always been the kind of man who could make a room go silent without raising his voice. He was muscular, serious, and impossible to read. But right now, I could see something behind his anger.

Fear.

He was scared.

The bedroom door opened behind me.

My mother, Vanessa, stood there wearing her mustard sweater, one hand pressed against her chest. My little sister Ava stood beside her, holding onto the doorframe.

Ava was fourteen.

Old enough to understand something was wrong.

Too young to understand what was happening.

“What happened?”” Vanessa whispered.

Marcus turned toward her.

“Your son has fifteen thousand dollars hidden under his bed.””

The color drained from her face.

That was the first moment I realized my father wasn’t the only one afraid.

My mother knew something.

Marcus looked back at me.

“Tell me who gave you the money.””

I stayed quiet.

His grip tightened around the cash.

“Jordan.””

I swallowed.

Then I looked past him.

Straight at my mother.

Her eyes begged me not to say it.

But the truth had already been buried too long.

“Mom did.””

The room became completely still.

Even the air conditioner seemed to stop making noise.

Marcus slowly turned his head.

“Vanessa.””

My mother looked down.

“Marcus…”

His voice became colder.

“You gave our son fifteen thousand dollars?””

She wiped her eyes quickly, but the tears came anyway.

“Please.””

“Please what?””

“I can explain.””

Marcus laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“Explain why my eighteen-year-old son has enough money to make me think he’s mixed up in something dangerous?””

Jordan stepped forward.

“I told you. I didn’t steal it.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Then tell me the truth.””

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because the truth was bigger than the money.

Bigger than the bag.

Bigger than the argument happening in that room.

Marcus threw the cash onto the bed.

“Someone needs to start talking.””

My mother closed her eyes.

Ava looked between all of us, terrified.

And then Marcus asked the one question I knew would break everything.

“Vanessa… what were you preparing our children for?””

My mother’s face changed.

Not anger.

Not guilt.

Panic.

And before she could answer, my phone buzzed on the desk.

Everyone looked at it.

One message.

One name.

A name that made my father’s expression disappear.

Because he recognized it too.

And when Marcus picked up my phone, he read the message out loud.

“Don’t let your father find out what happened eleven years ago.””

He looked at me.

Then at my mother.

“Eleven years ago?””

Nobody spoke.

But my father already knew.

May you like

Someone had been hiding a secret in our family for a very long time.

And now that secret was standing in the middle of my bedroom.
