Chapter 11: The Brother Who Stole A Life
Caleb looked nothing like the villain I had imagined.
That was the worst part.
He wasn’t screaming.
He wasn’t threatening.
He looked calm.
Almost disappointed.
Like he was walking into a family argument instead of the middle of a war.
Marcus stepped forward.
“You’re alive.””
Caleb smiled slightly.
“So are you.””
My father’s fists tightened.
“You destroyed my life.””
Caleb looked around the room.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You destroyed your own.””
Nobody moved.
Marcus stared.
“What did you say?””
Caleb walked farther inside.
“You always thought you were the hero.””
Darius stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Caleb glanced at him.
“You’re still protecting him?””
Darius’s expression hardened.
“Someone has to.””
Caleb smiled.
“Interesting.””
My father looked between them.
“How do you know each other?””
Neither answered.
That bothered him.
“Answer me.””
Caleb looked at Darius.
“You didn’t tell him?””
Darius stayed silent.
My father’s anger grew.
“What didn’t you tell me?””
Caleb sighed.
“This is why you were always easy to manipulate.””
Marcus stepped toward him.
“Careful.””
“No.””
Caleb looked directly at him.
“You need to hear this.””
He pointed at the files.
“You built this entire mystery and convinced yourself you were uncovering the truth.””
Caleb looked at me.
“But you never asked the most important question.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What question?””
Caleb smiled.
“Why did Marcus choose you?””
My father immediately answered.
“Because he loved him.””
Caleb looked at him.
“Maybe.””
The word felt cruel.
“But that’s not the whole story.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Stop.””
Caleb looked at her.
“You’ve lied enough.””
Her face went pale.
My father noticed.
“What does he mean?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Marcus, don’t listen.””
Caleb laughed.
“She still thinks she can protect you.””
My father looked at him.
“Tell me.””
Caleb walked toward the desk.
“You want the truth?””
“Yes.””
“Then start with this.””
He picked up the folder with my name.
“Jordan wasn’t randomly adopted.””
I froze.
“What?””
Caleb looked at me.
“You were placed with Marcus because of what your biological parents knew.””
My father stared.
“What did they know?””
Caleb looked at the photographs.
“The company wasn’t just hiding missing people.””
He paused.
“They were hiding children.””
The room went silent.
Ava grabbed my hand.
My mother whispered:
“No.””
Caleb continued.
“Children connected to people who threatened them.””
Marcus looked sick.
“Jordan’s parents?””
Caleb nodded.
“They were trying to expose everything.””
My father looked at me.
“And they died because of it.””
Caleb didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Marcus understood.
My father stepped closer.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“You knew where Jordan came from.””
“Yes.””
“You knew who his parents were.””
“Yes.””
“And you let him grow up not knowing.””
Caleb shrugged.
“Knowing would have gotten him killed.””
Marcus stared.
“You don’t get to pretend you protected him.””
Caleb’s face hardened.
“You think you protected him?””
The question hung there.
Caleb looked at me.
“You were hidden because of him.””
He pointed at Marcus.
My father went still.
“What?””
Caleb smiled.
“You were never the shield.””
A pause.
“You were the reason they found him.””
Nobody spoke.
My father looked confused.
“What are you talking about?””
Caleb walked closer.
“Your investigation.””
He pointed toward the files.
“You didn’t discover the company by accident.””
Marcus stared.
“You led them to us.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
Caleb’s voice became sharper.
“You trusted the wrong people.””
My father shook his head.
“I would remember.””
Caleb smiled sadly.
“That’s why they erased your memory.””
The words hit.
Again.
My father looked at Darius.
“You knew?””
Darius looked away.
That was enough.
Marcus stepped back.
“You all knew.””
Nobody answered.
Then Caleb reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small envelope.
He placed it on the desk.
“What is that?””
Caleb looked at Marcus.
“The last thing you wrote before you disappeared.””
My father stared.
“I already have a letter.””
Caleb nodded.
“You have the letter you wanted people to find.””
He tapped the envelope.
“This is the letter you didn’t want anyone to see.””
Marcus slowly picked it up.
His hands shook.
On the front were four words.
For Jordan.
Only after the truth.
My father opened it.
He read the first line.
Then he stopped.
His face changed completely.
“Dad?””
He looked at me.
And the fear in his eyes scared me more than anything Caleb had said.
Because whatever was in that letter…
was something Marcus had hidden from himself.
He looked back at Caleb.
“Why did you bring this?””
Caleb smiled.
“Because it’s time Jordan knows.””
My father looked down at the letter again.
Then he whispered:
“I wasn’t protecting you from them.””
May you like
A pause.
“I was protecting you from me.””
