Chapter 9: The Truth I Hid From My Father

I couldn’t speak.

Not because I didn’t know the answer.

Because I knew saying it would change how my father looked at me.

Everyone was watching.

My father.

My mother.

Ava.

Darius.

The room felt like it was waiting for a confession.

“Jordan,” Marcus said again.

“What did you find?””

I looked down.

At the floor.

At the old boxes.

Anywhere except his eyes.

“Inside the bag…”

My father stepped closer.

“Jordan.””

I took a breath.

“There was something else.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Like she already knew.

Marcus noticed.

“You knew?””

She didn’t answer.

His face tightened.

“Vanessa.””

“I knew he had it.””

“What is it?””

I reached into my jacket pocket.

My fingers touched the small object I had carried for weeks.

A flash drive.

I placed it on the desk.

Everyone stared.

My father looked at me.

“You had this the whole time?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Because I was scared.

Because I didn’t know who to trust.

Because every adult in my life had been lying.

But I only said:

“Because Mom told me not to show anyone.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

The disappointment on his face was worse than anger.

“You involved him.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“You gave him money.””

“I was trying to get him away.””

“You gave him a secret you knew he couldn’t carry.””

She started crying.

“I thought you were already gone.””

The words hit him.

“Gone?””

She looked at him.

“Marcus, eleven years ago, they told me you were dead.””

My father froze.

“They showed me proof.””

“The death certificate.””

“Yes.””

“And you believed it?””

“I was pregnant with Ava. Jordan was seven. I was alone.””

Her voice broke.

“I had no one.””

Nobody spoke.

For the first time, I understood something.

My mother wasn’t just hiding a secret.

She had been living inside one.

My father picked up the flash drive.

“What’s on this?””

I swallowed.

“I don’t know everything.””

“But you opened it?””

“Yes.””

“What did you see?””

I looked at the computer.

“Your name.””

My father stared.

“My name?””

“And mine.””

The room went silent.

Marcus looked confused.

“Why would your name be on something from eleven years ago?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know.

Darius took the flash drive.

“Let me see.””

My father didn’t stop him.

The old computer loaded the files.

There were only three.

The first one was labeled:

MARCUS_FINAL.

The second:

FAMILY_BACKUP.

The third:

JORDAN.

My father stared.

“Jordan?””

I nodded.

Darius clicked the file.

A video appeared.

My own face filled the screen.

But it wasn’t recent.

It was from when I was a child.

Seven years old.

I was sitting at a kitchen table.

My father was beside me.

Younger.

Smiling.

I barely remembered the moment.

Then younger Marcus spoke.

“Jordan, if you’re watching this, it means something happened.””

My younger self looked confused.

The video continued.

“You may not remember this conversation.””

My father looked at me.

“You knew?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t remember.””

The younger Marcus looked directly into the camera.

“Your mother may tell you to run.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“But before you do, you need to know one thing.””

The younger version of my father leaned closer.

“You were the reason I started investigating.””

I felt my chest tighten.

Me?

The video continued.

“You found something in my office.””

My father looked shocked.

“What?””

Darius stared at the screen.

The younger Marcus continued.

“Jordan found the first clue.””

My memories came back.

A locked drawer.

A folder.

A symbol I didn’t recognize.

A day when my father told me never to touch his work things again.

I thought he was angry.

But maybe he was scared.

The video continued.

“I erased your memory of it because you were too young.””

My father looked at me.

“You erased my memory?””

The screen showed younger Marcus shaking his head.

“Not because I didn’t trust you.””

A pause.

“Because I loved you.””

Nobody spoke.

Even Vanessa was crying silently.

Then the video changed.

The younger Marcus’s face became serious.

“If Caleb found out Jordan was involved, he would come after him.””

My father stood completely still.

The final words appeared.

“Jordan is not the witness.””

A pause.

“He is the evidence.””

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

Then my father’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

No one spoke at first.

Then a familiar voice came through.

Caleb.

“Marcus.””

My father’s grip tightened.

“What do you want?””

Caleb laughed softly.

“I want what you’ve always been protecting.””

My father looked at me.

“Stay away from my son.””

A pause.

Then Caleb said:

“That’s the problem, Marcus.””

His voice became colder.

“Jordan was never your son.””

The call ended.

And nobody in the room moved.

Because every person there was thinking the same thing.

If Caleb was telling the truth…

May you like

then the biggest secret in our family wasn’t about my father’s disappearance.

It was about me.
